Get up to 20% back on LNER train bookings

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Rail operator LNER has launched a special offer via its app.

For any LNER journey booked via the app by 16th April (travel can be later) you will receive 10% back in LNER Perks credit. This can be redeemed against a future LNER journey. No registration is required.

The standard LNER Perks rate is just 2%, and this remains the rate for website bookings.

The offer of £5 free credit for joining LNER Perks is still running.

On top, some American Express cards currently have a 10% cashback offer for LNER which would stack with this. There is also a less rewarding 5% version of this offer available via Amex and certain other credit card cashback portals such as Virgin Atlantic.

The credit card cashback pays out irrespective of which train company you book via LNER, and pays out for app or online bookings.

Re LNER I have 5% on MBNA (comes and goes) plus 5% on Airtime (always available)

I bought some vouchers last night even though most of my train trips aren’t on LNER I book most trips via them as it’s just about the only rail operator with rebate offers.

    • BJ says:

When you buy LNER vouchers are they valid on any operator? I never bothered as I thought I could only use them on LNER.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

That was my concern as well but yes you can use them on any operator but not if you’ve used LNER perks towards payment when they do become LNER only trains.

There is an option during the buying process.

        • BJ says:

Thanks great comment/tip to start the day! I knew other evouchers from refunds etc were now valid on any operator but suspected that if we bought LNER voucher it might still only be valid on LNER. I think I might now be tempted to add a few hundred for the 10% off.

Do you also cut open the toothpaste tube to get every last reminent out? My grandfather would be very proud 🙂

    • Alex G says:

Stupid comment on a useful post.

      • CarpalTravel says:

David seems confused by this site and its very purpose.

We’re not all here because we like collecting and discussing timepieces. (Though I do like doing that..)

        • Rob says:

Watchfinder has spent a substantial sum advertising with us in the last 4 months and is happy with the response 🙂

    • zapato1060 says:

Yes Dave, you put our name to shame. Plus your grandfather would be proud of me as I do as he did/does.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

No I don’t do that but for a minutes extra effort in buying £ 300 of vouchers I’ve got a rebate of £30 which would buy a lot of toothpaste.

    • NorthernLass says:

I not only do that, as I was brought up not to be wasteful, I used my £5 Amex credit to stock up on toothpaste at B & M recently 😂

    • Dubious says:

I do this. I’m not ashamed to say that either.
      Why not?
I worked hard for my money – I’m not going to then waste my money buying toothpaste just to throw it away. It takes all of 3 seconds to cut the tube open.

    • WaynedP says:

No need for any blades, just add a little hot water when “empty”, shake well and you have an extra dose of free mouthwash.

      • NorthernLass says:

In the days of metal tubes you could roll up the end to get every last bit out (as my mum used to do in the 70s!) but it doesn’t work with the plastic ones, they just unravel and the toothpaste goes back to the bottom.

        • WaynedP says:

We were allowed to throw the old rolled up metal tubes into the fire as kids and watch as the build up of heated air/steam inside “magically” unrolled and eventually burst the tube.

Fun to watch and unconscious science learning at the same time.

        • jjoohhnn says:

Put a food bag clip over it and turn it upside down.

        • CarpalTravel says:

@NL – I use the side of my toothbrush to press against the side of the sink, then putting the base of the toothpaste tube between the two, I then pull it through whilst pressing down on the toothbrush, kind of like a manual mangle, of sorts. That gets all the toothpaste to the top quickly and easily! 🙂

        • Lady London says:

A special tool used to be available that would roll the tube efficiently so you got it all out. But you could sometimes unroll it again when the tube was empty and either unroll the sealef bottom of the tube or just cut it off then back inside the tube from the bottom with your toothbrush for any last fine scrapings.

With the price of Elgydium it’s well worth doing.

  • Al says:

There’s been a real dearth of decent credit card deals (i.e. sign-ups) since the Barclays Avios bonus. Could do with some new news.

  • Gordon says:

    I believe we have digressed?

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

You can only use LNER perks on LNER trains.

  • David says:

Today is also your last day to drive across Gibraltar airport runway, from midnight tonight a tunnel opens under the eastern end near the beach.
You will still be able to walk across however, which is much more fun.

  • Gav says:

LNER often have deals on Nectar Connect too, 10 points per £.
You can register for the LNER smart card and it also works on SouthEastern (assume it does on the other lines) Have started doing that for my season ticket as still means you can ‘tap’ through but get the points for it.

  • Andrew. says:

Nobody should be buying LNER tickets without some form of rebate.

The offers come and go, but right now I have rebates on BoS, HfX, MBNA, Barclaycard and Virgin Money cards. Nothing at the moment on Nectar Connect, but it turns up often. Airtime is 8% for me at the moment, It varies between 2% & 10%.

Whilst this gives you a rebate on all rail services, I’m aware of a Scottish mate who has had a 100% rebate on every LNER+Connections journey so far this year due to the arriving an hour or more late as a consequence of delays or missed connections.
