Billhop will no longer accept personal customers – accounts to be closed

Billhop has emailed users this week to say that it is closing to personal customers from 13th June.

We have covered Billhop many times on HfP. It allows you to pay bills with a credit card, even when the end user does not accept credit cards. Put simply, Billhop charges your credit card and then makes a bank transfer to the company you are paying.

Many HfP readers used it to pay HMRC tax bills with an American Express card.

Billhop closing

Whilst Billhop wasn’t free – and it didn’t make a lot of sense to use it purely for the points due to the fees – it did have value if you were otherwise struggling to trigger a sign-up bonus or an annual spend voucher. If you were self employed it made more sense, since the Billhop fee was tax deductible in certain circumstances.

Billhop is moving towards serving large corporate clients and is closing all of its personal accounts. This is partly a Brexit issue, since Billhop is a Swedish business and would now be required to obtain a separate UK licence to serve UK personal customers.

There is no alternative service that I know of, unfortunately.
