Whilst I wasn’t hugely impressed by Kimpton Aysla Mallorca last month (review here), the chain is pushing on with its Spanish expansion.
It has just announced Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella on the Costa del Sol.
IHG is taking the shuttered The Hotel Los Monteros and refurbishing it.
The hotel is at the foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountain range between Malaga and the Strait of Gibraltar. Malaga is a 40 minute drive whilst Gibraltar is an hour.
Whilst the facilities sound similar to those offered in Mallorca – four restaurants and bars, two swimming pools, a gym, a spa – it will hopefully have larger grounds. It is big enough to have tennis courts.
It remains to be seen if this will become an iconic European Kimpton hotel (eg Paris, London if you avoid the base rooms) or another victim of corporate pressure to roll out the brand as quickly as possible (eg Amsterdam, Mallorca).
There is no opening date yet, and I suspect it could end up being 2025.
