New Aspire lounge, used by British Airways, opens at Belfast City Airport

The newly extended Aspire lounge has opened at Belfast City Airport.

This is the lounge used by British Airways for its premium and status passengers and it is also part of the Priority Pass and DragonPass lounge card programmes.

The lounge can also be used by Aer Lingus and KLM passengers who have suitable elite status or a qualifying ticket.

Aspire has invested £1.2 million in the new site.

The lounge has been able to grow because Aspire has extended into the space which became available when British Airways decided to close its lounge.

(We believe that history is about to repeat itself at Newcastle, where Aspire is rumoured to be planning an extension into the old British Airways space.)

The new capacity is 178 people, an increase of 70.

The original Aspire space has been refurbished to match the extension, creating a unified space. Direct boarding to British Airways flights remains.

Aspire said in a statement:

“We are excited to unveil our new Aspire Lounge at George Best Belfast City Airport which showcases the Aspire brand and the rich culture of Belfast and beyond. The new lounge offers business travellers, families and individuals a welcoming, relaxing and energising experience before their flight, in a comfortable lounge that is recognisably Aspire, with a distinct sense of place.

“Guests can enjoy an enhanced food and beverage offering, work from purpose-built booths, or relax and soak up the view of the airfield and the surroundings.”

Access to the lounge for anyone who cannot get in for free is available for £36.99 via the airport website. It is cheaper at £31.99 from Lounge Pass.

I hope they’ve installed a decent espresso coffee machine and not an imitation Nespresso one like the one in Manchester Airport T1

  • Amy C says:

That looks nice, I shall give it a whirl in September when I go to the Titanic Experience.

  • TC says:

I was there on the weekend. It’a a really nice space. Lots of plug sockets (not usb) and a door that lets you board your LHR flight without having to leave the lounge. Food wasn’t great but hopefully this will improve.

  • VALittleRed says:

I wonder if they offer alcoholic drinks now as when I went in May, they couldn’t apparently

    • Mark F says:

Used the lounge yesterday. Fantastic space and full wet bar. 10/10.

    • Rhys says:

They do. They couldn’t during the renovation due to some licencing thing (it was mentioned on their website).

  • Andrew says:

Was there last week – it’s really quite a pleasant lounge. Big enough that it didn’t feel crowded, wide selection of drinks, and perfectly edible food.

Mixed feelings on this. Expanding (and refurbishing) the lounge will be a big improvement over the current awful Aspire lounge but I feel the best option would be for BA to reopen a lounge in this space (unlikely I know).

The airport started construction of a new ‘luxury lounge’ in 2019 but this was pushed during covid, then it appeared to resume and then stopped again. This lounge would be on the upper level where the shops are and would have good views of the airfield.

    • S says:

I believe the ‘new’ lounge is in the former Cheviot lounge area which is a good location if so although must have been shut for well over 10 years now.

I’d support aspire expanding into the BA area if they refurbish it to this sort of standard.

      • Save East Coast Rewards says:

It is in the area where the Cheviot lounge used to be but there was extra building work to support it (you can see it if you look up towards that area when boarding the plane) so it must have been intended to be larger than the Cheviot lounge was.

I only went to the Cheviot lounge once, who ran it?

Going back even further, there used to be a Flybe lounge where Aspire currently is.

  • Mark says:

I visited yesterday. No problem getting in with priority pass, coffee was a decent bean to cup (although the only decaf option was instant), food was hit and miss (soup was good, chilli was inedible). Decent selection of wines and beer, Prosecco is extra. Nice views of the runway and the BA Heathrow flight pulled straight up to the gate infront.

  • Ben Wardill says:

The espresso is a lot better than the Americano from the same machine! Seems to be plenty of alcohol – a few different beers, a couple of wines and various spirits.
It seems like a nice spot, though it’s not very busy at the moment which always helps.
Toilets haven’t been finished yet, so it’s back outside for them.
