British Airways extends the Air Belgium charter on the Chicago route

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

As we’ve covered previously, British Airways is currently using Air Belgium to operate one of the two daily flights to Chicago.

It is a wet lease with Air Belgium also providing the pilots and crew.

Why Chicago? Chicago is a nine hour flight and a long haul aircraft typically sits on the ground for two hours between sectors. This allows British Airways to allocate this aircraft to a dedicated route, and all it will do is fly back and forth from Chicago.

Air Belgium A330neo leased to British Airways for Chicago

Flying to New York, Boston or the Middle East would leave the aircraft on the ground for too long in London, assuming it was used for the same flight every day. Any flight over ten hours in duration couldn’t be done with just one aircraft.

According to AeroRoutes, the lease will now run until 14th November. It was originally showing as ending on 29th October.

Feedback on Air Belgium hasn’t been bad. It is using a new Airbus A330neo – you can see interior images in our original article on the swap here.

You have the option of swapping to the other daily Chicago flight which remains BA operated, with potential swaps to American Airlines too.

  • TimM says:

Can’t you just go to a police station, claim asylum and get a one-way ticket to Rwanda plus hotel for free? They may let you upgrade to business class for cash at check-in.

    • Charles Martel says:

Its incredible any one wants to go there, the Guardian report the FCO stating “there are state control, security, surveillance structures from the national level down to [households]. Political opposition is not tolerated and arbitrary detention, torture and even killings are accepted methods of enforcing control too.”

      • The Lord says:

People visit China, I don’t see the difference

        • The Original David says:

Exactly, very similar to China. As long as you’re not trying to launch a political opposition party, those sort of warnings shouldn’t really be relevant to you.

        • Dan says:

And some Middle Eastern counties featured regularly here too.

        • Catalan says:

Rwanda models it’s governance on that of Singapore. Neither would be described as liberal democracies but I don’t hear anyone calling for changes in electoral laws or civil liberties there.

        • Jay says:

Surprisingly they multiple non stop flights to the US too!

      • sayling says:

Phew… I thought, for a minute, you were referring to asylum seekers coming here…

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

The demand for seats is probably from day-rate consultants advising the Home Office!

      • meta says:

Rwanda is the best place to go if you want to do gorilla trekking.

        • Londonsteve says:

Which, oddly enough, I don’t. Any other reason?

          • meta says:

This is the most popular activity to do in Africa for those who have already done safaris.. Just because you don’t want to experience the world in all its beauty, richness and plurality, doesn’t mean that others don’t. The world does not revolve around you.

  • Robert says:

OT Any good hotel deals in NYC currently? Or any recomendations, midtown seems pricey compared to no-mad which has a few interesting new ones, including a Kimpton opening soon. Thanks in advance.

  • Paul says:

I imagine RwandaAir have been able to expand given all the tax payer cash that has been poured into Rwanda by our government.

    • Charles Martel says:

Perhaps they’re hoping to pick up some one way fares?

  • Dev says:

Once the judicial process is completed and decides in favour of the government, RwandAir will pick up a considerable amount of business. For every 3 tickets heading to Kigali, 2 will return… every detainee has 2 escort officers.

    • JandeW says:

Should be a barrel of laughs back there in the Economy cabin…!!😂

      • Richie says:

I have been on a flight with a deportee and their escorts before, not to Africa, it was not a barrel of laughs.

      • James Harper says:

If you’ve ever been on a flight when someone is being deported, there’s nothing pleasant about it for anyone. Seeing someone in distress and being sent somewhere they don’t want to go rubs off on those around them. Some airlines now refuse to carry deportees from the UK given the rot of the system and current government thank goodness.

  • dundj says:

It is The Open Championship, not the British Open.

    • John says:

Yeah, but the American news media insist on changing the name, and this has spread.

  • Willmo says:

Does the Rwandair plane sit on the ground for the entire day at Heathrow?

I understand there are benefits to operating overnight flights in both directions, and for optimising connections in Kigali, I’m just surprised that that outweighs the horrific utilisation.

    • Londonsteve says:

Profitability is not usually the number 1 concern when you’ve got an authoritarian regime the other end. Putting on your best face, growing market share, developing a good reputation and appearing reliable are usually priorities to turning a profit. This is how Emirates and Qatar have become global titans and indeed these days they might actually turn a profit?

    • ADS says:

maybe they are expecting to wet lease it to BA for some daytime flights ?

  • Kiley says:

Hilton Garden Inn Old Trafford is the best view of any cricket in the world. Wake up, draw curtains, watch sport…..
Lancashire Cricket Hospitality take care of the bookings for match days but will allow you to add your Hilton Honours Membership number to the booking

    • TGLoyalty says:

Hopefully you get dressed between waking up and drawing curtains

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Years ago on a tour of the Sky Dome in Toronto the guides actively pointed out the room(s) with field views where certain adult activities took place and were visible from some parts of the stadium!

  • Mutley says:

There must be some opportunity here to get a load of points from deported asylum seekers, along the lines of Belkin and his Thai rice farmers, now where’s Suella’s number…..
