Becky Hill plays Hilton’s Secret Socials gig

Back in May, we told you about a mystery Hilton concert that was to be held at the Canopy by Hilton London City hotel.

Tickets were available for 35,000 Hilton Honors points which we’d value at around £100. You weren’t told who would be performing (past concerts had featured Kylie, Stormzy and Ellie Goulding) but the tickets did include unlimited champagne pre- and post-concert as well as substantial canapes.

I’m not sure how many tickets were made available but it was a significantly smaller venue than the Stormzy gig last winter. It was good to see that at least four went to Head for Points readers who said hi to me on the night. (My ticket was gifted by Hilton Honors.)

This is only the second time that Hilton Honors members have been invited to one of these events. They are separate to the summer gigs that Hilton used to run pre-covid which were exclusively for Hilton Honors members, and included Bastille and Jessie J in recent years.

The seats are usually given to surprised hotel guests who just happen to be booked in that night, with others going to Hilton’s charity partners and members of the artist’s fan club.

And the special guest on Wednesday night? Becky Hill. There can’t have been more than 75 people in Canopy’s rooftop bar. There are stunning views of the City from here:

Becky Hill did a set of 45-minute or so, whizzing through her hits before handing over to DJ Jodie Harsh who rounded the night out. I left at 10:30 but I hear the night went on into the small hours of the morning.

Moet & Chandon was available throughout the night and the Canopy put on an excellent spread of canapes, including beef tacos, some of the most delicious sausage rolls I have ever had (sorry Greggs!), chicken satay and tempura prawns.

We’ll let you know when tickets for the next Secret Socials gig become available, but they have become a victim of their own success and are snapped up very quickly.

  • Can2 says:

It’s becoming a bad habit for HfP writers not to mention the availability or the quality of veggie/vegan food in the reviews. For the Hilton event should we understand that there was no veg food or they didn’t bother writing about it?

    • The Lord says:

      Don’t think the majority care

      • Nick says:

        +1

        • Mikeact says:

+1 Can’t understand why a daft comment like that would be posted on here…a travel blog, not a good food guide….just pick up the phone and ask them….we are not here to pander to all minority groups. Very infuriating.

          • ianM says:

Perhaps frequent flier nerds are also a minority group? 🙂

          • EClub says:

UK vegetarian market worth €10bn. Not pandering at all. Is being veggie “woke” now?

          • Rob says:

To be fair we are happy to pander to minority groups such as lovers of different types of electrical sockets.

However, in this scenario, it makes no blinkin’ difference! Future events are unlikely to be at the Canopy so what they did or did not serve is irrelevant.

Oddly I don’t remember a single person asking if we were serving vegetarian or vegan food at the HfP summer party which 500 of you attended. (Answer – we did, Sinead is vegetarian (on a good day) and ensured a good selection was available.)

      • Dawn says:

Maybe they don’t. But I am allergic to milk, cream, yoghurt although I love it. It makes me illl. So I have no option but to eat many vegan products. I love eating an ice cream – sadly not many vegan options. Same with chocolate. Most soups contain milk or cream. Please don’t rush to judgement on people needed by vegan products. ISometimes we have no choice.

    • Matt R says:

There’s always without exception an option for veggies/vegans 🙂

      • Patrick says:

Being a vegetarian is a huge missed steak 🙂

      • david says:

I want to see a veggie sausage with an option of pork in them.

btw who in the world is Becky Hill?

        • Alex Sm says:

This is a far more important question! But she seems to be big given HfP dedicated half an article to her

          • WaynedP says:

Ever eager to be educated, I turned to Google. Apparently she had a number one UK hit in 2014 which is available to view on YouTube.

Well, that’s 3 minutes of my life that I’ll never get back, and enough disturbing images to haunt the rest of my Friday.

Am hoping that breaking out the popcorn and following the vegan/unisex toilets/overlooked minorities discussion will be a sufficiently entertaining antidote.

          • rob keane says:

that might be more to do with the free ticket and their ongoing hilton ‘relationship’

          • Rob says:

I suspect this is more to do with you not being down with the kids, Rob 🙂 Hilton could have sold out a party night with Jodie on the decks quicker, possibly, than they could have sold out Becky.

We’re also totally desperate for content because both Rhys and I are going away next week and anything that can fill a space is going in 🙂

          • Rhys says:

We wrote about the sale of the Secret Socials tickets…it’s not so much about her as it is the entire event!

        • MPC says:

Well, Becky Hill has had 18 top 40 singles in the last decade in the UK. Given the previous artists in this series have been the likes of Bastille, Stormzy and Jessie J, all of whom have similar levels of success in the UK charts, over the same period of time. If you’ve heard of them but not heard of her, I don’t know what to say. If you’ve not heard of any of them, then maybe this series of events isn’t of interest to you!

      • Jek says:

I always wanted to go to a vegetarian restaurant and ask the the carnivore option 😉

    • can2 says:

      First, minorities exist.
      Second, don’t be a bully.

      • yorkieflyer says:

yes but not all minorities can be catered for all the time everywhere

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Not sure it matters as this is a one off event. Plus it’s not really a review more a report. There’s no comment on the quality of the singers actual performance either.

It would matter if this was a restaurant review where such info would be useful. But it’s not.

And people could complain that there was no halal food mentioned or whether the prawns were from a sustainable fishery and was the chicken in the satay from a free range one and no mention of access for the differently abled and so on.

      • Navara says:

No mention either of lactose free or gluten free. Being vegan is a personal choice the former are not.

        • Nick says:

Why no mention either of the availability of gender-neutral toilets at the hotel?!

          • Gordon says:

No no no! Please don’t mention “Toilets” Do you not remember the outpouring of grief and criticism when BA announced they were to change their Lounge toilets to Unisex!!!

          • J says:

There’s at least one in every guest room.

    • Mike Hunt says:

Can2 – the vast majority of people don’t care, if you need to make your own inquiries to meet your own wants / needs (however you would describe your niche lifestyle choice) then do so, don’t expect others to be constantly pandering to you.

    • Kevin C says:

Before the gig there were arincini bites and a vegan courgette thing. Afterwards they served little burgers including a falafel burger. The events take place in a different venue each time so I imagine the food is different.

It was great to see Becky in such a tiny venue. It was standing and very much jumping along rather than lounging on sofas.

Very good to meet a few HFP readers and have a quick chat with Rhys.

    • Can2 says:

Let me reiterate what I meant for one last time.
If the review mentions food options (it doesn’t have to, but it did), at least say ”veg options were available” or “dietary restrictions were catered for” etc after listing what options with animal flesh were available. That’s not difficult. That’s not some woke conspiracy. I don’t need pondering I just would like know, since the other options were mentioned.

I am just hoping you don’t treat your veg friends like this in real life.

      • Rhys says:

It’s 2023, in London. I thought it goes without saying that there will be alternatives available – didn’t think it needed a specific mention!

        • Alex Sm says:

Well put, Rhys. Someone definitely wanted a storm in a teacup on a Friday in the middle of silly season…

        • whiskerxx says:

          Isn’t it 2023 everywhere?

          • Rob says:

I was reading the comments to an article on the Telegraph website this morning with my Nero coffee and it appears it isn’t. More like 1953.

          • The Savage Squirrel says:

That comment about the Telegraph just made me snort orange juice through my nose from laughing.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

I treat my vegetarian and vegan friends very well thanks very much.

But I know if they read this they wouln’t care that the veg food wasn’t mentioned in a report of a one off event.

      • Lady London says:

As Rhys says, this is London 2023 and whether I want it or not, I lose menu choices for the things I personally need to eat/ not eat as at least vegetarians occupy some of them, and these days vegan too

I’ll also just respectfully point out the toilet issue did affect *half* the human race that uses them deteriorating their conditions of using an essential hygiene item quite seriously.

  • Brian says:

Did the planing take so long because they did it by hand? 😋

    • Kurt says:

Or perhaps they spent all that time gliding back and forth over the existing tarmac and airport perimeter…..

  • Nick says:

    Canopy canapé 🤭

  • Michael C says:

    Moet&Chandon is certified vegan!

  • Hak says:

A sausage roll that is superior then Greggs? Never thought it possible!

  • Alex G says:

    Becky who?

  • Sloth says:

Would have been pretty disappointed to see the act was Becky Hill tbh. At least Jodie Harsh would have improved the evening

  • yorkieflyer says:

Easyjet start flights to Belfast and Glasgow from Southampton from the start of the winter schedule
