IMPORTANT: American Express suspends the scrapping of pro-rata card fee refunds

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express informed us on Wednesday morning that it has suspended its plans to stop pro-rata fee refunds on its UK credit cards from 2nd October.

We don’t have any further information at this point. This is very much a last minute change of heart, given that the original announcement was made (in a HfP exclusive story) back in mid June.

This means that there is no longer a requirement to cancel any cards this week if you didn’t want to find yourself locked in for the rest of your membership year.

American Express suspends end of pro rata fee refunds

We believe that Amex does not intend to inform cardholders of this change, but the call centre agents have been told and can confirm this to you. You may want to call to get your own confirmation since there is no public statement that we can show you as verification.

We don’t know what the position is if you have cancelled a card this week and would now like it back.

The plan to stop pro-rata fee refunds is not dead, just resting, but we understand that there will be no changes until at least 2024.

I suggest keeping a regular eye on HfP over the next 2-3 weeks for more news ….

I would not mind if they remove dining credit but kept the fees low, say even to £400 per year.

  • Simon says:

Does this mean they are also delaying the new terms and conditions? As I’m a non-UK resident I will no longer be eligible for the card and will lose my travel insurance so would like to know before I cancel.

  • BP says:

    Platinum card cancelled today.

  • kpinc says:

Today is the last business day. So if not today, I’m guessing they are planning to send out comms during the weekend or first thing Monday morning? However, Monday would already be the date that the new terms take effect (minus the pro rata refunds changes according to this article).

  • sloth says:

seems they are busy, calling to cancel and can’t get through…

    • sloth says:

got through and cancelled my Plat as this whole situation is ridiculous and dont want any part of it anymore. Got the distinct impression from the girl I spoke to that she has pretty much been doing this all day…

    Oh Rob, you’re such a tease! 😉

  • Roy says:

I have a sneak preview of the upcoming announcement.

All travel partners for MR will be removed, but in a shock U-turn you will, again, be able to redeem your MR points for toasters (but only toasters). The hotel status benefits of Plat will be removed, but a valuable new benefit will be added to the Plat card: you will receive a 10% discount on all purchases of toasters from selected partner stores.

The BA cards will continue to earn Avios, but the Avios will not be transferred to BA and will sit in a special Amex Avios account, where they will be redeemable for toasters (and only toasters). 2-4-1 vouchers will no longer be redeemable on flights, but on the upside, you will be able to use your voucher to buy two toasters for the normal Avios cost of one fost toaster..

Have I got it right, Rob? Remember, you read it here first!

When does the BA Premium Amex 60,000 offer end. Rob’s article mentioned 10th October, but when I am clicking it is showing 25,000 for the premium one and 5,000 for the blue one.

    • a270 says:

Just reread and says 60,000 if you are an Executive Club member from a specific page. Does that mean no one can refer you?
