Flapjack or banana bread? We try BA’s new short haul economy snacks!

Just over a month ago, British Airways replaced the free snacks it provides on short haul economy flights. Instead of a bag of pretzels or crisps, you now get a choice between banana bread or a sultana flapjack.

No images were forthcoming when the change was made, but both Rob and I had the opportunity to try them on our recent flights to Lisbon for World Aviation Festival.

This is what they look like:

They are hand made in the Cotswolds by Four Anjels Ltd. According to their website, they also produce own-label goods for Pret, Caffe Nero and Itsu.

Here they are, in the nude. Click to enlarge.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. How big are they? Well, I took some photos with a British Airways Gold card for scale – that’s the same size as your standard credit card. Don’t say we don’t offer a public service!

The dimensions of the flapjack are 6.5cm by 2.5cm by 1cm thick. The banana bread is slightly taller.

According to the packaging, the flapjack weighs 28g. This compares to 110g to 125g for the flapjacks in my local newsagent.

No weight for the banana bread is given but it is noticeably lighter. I wouldn’t be surprised if it weighed just over half.

The banana bread contains egg and wheat.

The taste test

Both Rob and I agreed that the flapjack is the clear winner of the two. I’m no flapjack connoisseur but it had the chewy, sweet oaty texture I associate with flapjacks. The small size means that you don’t get large pieces of sultana though.

The banana bread is less successful. It is extremely fluffy, and not at all like the more stodgy, moist banana bread I would normally enjoy or bake myself. The banana element is via puree (19% of the weight) and the cake has a light banana smell.

Conclusion

Whether you will prefer the new snacks versus the old ones will depend on whether you have a sweet or savoury tooth, I think.

(It also depends on when you are flying, as early morning services still serve a Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain bar instead of the new cakes.)

You do at least get a choice between two options now, whereas previously only one snack was stocked. If you didn’t like it then tough.

And, whilst small, a small bottle of water and a snack is still more than you can expect for free on virtually any other European airline in economy. Good luck getting much of anything for free in economy on Lufthansa.

  • Simon says:

You do get a free bottle of water and a tiny chocolate on Lufthansa in economy.

I kind of wish neither BA or Lufthansa gave out anything especially the water as it generates so much waste with the packaging and as it’s free almost everyone feels the need to take it regardless if they are thirsty or not. People who have already taken their own water on the plane end up taking one.

    • John says:

Exactly. 300 ml water and a 10 g chocolate on LH. Not exactly less than what you get on BA.

You can expect substantially more on TK (full hot main plus appetitizer plus dessert even in eco), A3 (hot snack plus free drink selection), or LO (more substantial cold snack and free still and sparkling water and coffee tea).

Of course, there are rumors AF and KL will introduce buy-on-board, but for now there are free drinks (including wine and beer) and snacks.

Rhys got it wrong that BA delivers about the best you can expect in Euro eco. I’d argue it’s the other way around: BA and LHG provide the least among European network carriers).

      • Andrew J says:

Austrian give you a cup of water (which those who are into saving the planet might feel more comfortable with than a plastic bottle) and a small chocolate.

      • lumma says:

I got a terrible cold sandwich on a 1 finger KitKat on Aegean last spring from LHR to ATH (if I’m right that A3 is them?)

  • Mohamed says:

European greediness at its best , fly 1 hour flight economy in Mideast whether MEA, Jordanian, Egypt air not to mention the big 3 and you will get something decent, BA don’t even serve anything decent to Istanbul, Cairo or Amman.

    • Jonathan says:

Yep I made the mistake of using BA when I flew to Cairo then home from Amman, it was flight times that was the main draw for me though… doh ! 😑

      • vlcnc says:

They reconfigured the BMI mid-haul A321 to standard short-haul layout and downgraded the service. Its been a grievance of Egyptian and Jordanian friends who had booked and not realised. Were appalled and have vowed never to fly BA again.

  • Jack says:

I think this looks like a good alternative, am curious though to know if it is only served on longer routes currently . Hope to get to try one soon they look very yummy especially as I prefer sweet to savory. I think it’s good they offer a snack and some water with the option to pre order other items online and get some onboard too

    • Rob says:

Still pretzels on shorter routes as stocks are used up.

    • AL says:

Deliveries for advance orders arrive so infrequently that I don’t bother any more, like most I know.

  • Timothy Firmager says:

Having flown a number of domestic BA flights over September, I can confirm the roll-out has not made it to those yet. The offering is still pretzels. Maybe the remaining stock is being used up on domestic flights before they also get these new baked goods.

  • meta says:

Last night, I still had pretzels. They must be going through stock, so it’s not yet fully rolled out.

  • phantomchickenz says:

Pretty sure mine was a ginger cake a few months ago to Prague (going again this evening so can compare).

What exactly is “hand made” anyway? Because the thousands they’d need to churn out per day are most certainly not entirely made by hand!

    • Scott says:

Someone empties a bag of pre-made mix into a mixer and presses the start button 😉

      • Mikel says:

That about sums up “hand made” nowadays. Why do they feel compelled to feed us this rubbish.

    • Hbommie says:

Expecting? Not much really, and looks like I was correct by the size comparison.

  • BJ says:

If BA relaunched BKK they could fill the cargo hold daily with banana bread from 7/11 which is decent and costs only 10 or 12 Baht each. I wonder what they are paying for these bites.

    • Lady London says:

Are those sounds of desperation I hear from you, for BA to bring back Bangkok@BJ? 🙂

      • BJ says:

More frustration @LL? I could pay for AY but I’ve got avios I want to use up before they become less valuable. Only finding availability on AY or at standard pricing on QR is next to impossible.

  • PeterK says:

Just flew out & back from Athens on Aegean in economy. They still serve a hot meal to everyone in economy (irrespective of fare paid) plus free beer/wine and soft drinks followed by a tea or coffee. A very clever service whereby the crew make up each meal tray as they pass through. Great recycling of waste items too. The meal tray is small and when made up contains a salad starter plus a choice of two hot dishes (one veg). Once the tray is collected the crew hand out decent sized biscuits or full size muesli bars. This clever service also allows them to round trip cater even with a small rear galley.

    • TimM says:

Excellent report, thanks PeterK. I will be travelling Aegean MAN-ATH-KLX in two weeks’ time. There is barely time for an orange juice on the second leg but I look forward to indulging on the first.

    • Coo says:

Aegean is moving to buy on board as well.

    • John says:

The size of the A3 economy meal is about 25% of the size it was in 2019. Still better than other European airlines but hardly worth bothering with. If you don’t eat in the lounge you will be hungry. If you think the biscuits now are “full size” then what they had before was giant sized
