If you are sitting on 600+ Nectar points and not quite sure what to do with them, Nectar has launched a new redemption offer with Esso.

Until 15th November, you can redeem 600 Nectar points for 10p off per litre of fuel. Depending on the size of your tank, this could save you £5+ on your next purchase, getting you close to 1p per Nectar point of value.

The standard Nectar deal at Esso is 300 Nectar points for 5p off per litre. This is the same ‘pence per point’ valuation as this special deal, but the new ‘600 points for 10p off’ offer lets you make a larger cash saving in one fill.

Special Esso redemption offer with Nectar points

Is spending Nectar points at Esso a good deal?

In short, yes.

A Nectar point is worth exactly 0.5p in virtually all cases.

As 600 Nectar points are usually worth £3, as soon as you’ve put in more than 30 litres of petrol in your car you are getting a better deal than 0.5p.

The offer is capped at 60 litres which would be a saving of £6, getting you 1p per Nectar point.

You don’t need to register in advance for the deal. When your Nectar card is scanned by the garage, or you pay through the Esso app, you will be asked if you want to activate the discount.

You can also earn Nectar points at Esso

Esso is also a Nectar earning partner.

Nectar collectors can collect 2 points per £1 spent in an Esso shop and 1 point per litre of fuel purchased. Not all Esso stations are included in the partnership, but you can see the full list of participating stations on this page.

Get 1,000 bonus Nectar points when you download the Esso app

Esso is currently running a special offer for new users of the Esso app.

Download the app to your phone and add your Nectar details and your credit card number. You will receive 1,000 bonus Nectar points on your first fill when you pay with the app.

There are extra bonuses to encourage you to keep on using the app:

  • double Nectar points on your second fill when you pay with the Esso app
  • 4x Nectar points on your fourth fill when you pay with the Esso app
  • 6x Nectar points on your sixth fill when you pay with the Esso app
  • 500 bonus Nectar points on your 8th fill

Please note that this offer is for new app customers only. Full details of this offer can be found on this page of the Esso website.

How else can you spend Nectar points on travel?

If you don’t have a car, there are many other ways of using Nectar points for travel benefits.

There are a number of additional options for travel redemptions with Nectar.

Use Nectar points for Nectar hotels

You can redeem Nectar points via the Nectar Hotels room booking service via this link.

Nectar Hotels is also a collect partner, with the ability to earn up to 2,000 points per night booked.

Additionally, Eurostar is a ‘redeem only’ partner at the rate of £2.50 per 500 Nectar points. There is a 2,000 point minimum redemption, with vouchers available for £10, £25, £50 and £100.

Multiple vouchers can be used in one transaction if booking a train-only ticket on the Eurostar website, but only one voucher per transaction can be used if booking a ‘train and hotel’ package.

If you’d like to see the full list of Nectar travel partners, please see the website here.

Conclusion

Nectar remains one of the most straightforward loyalty programmes to understand when it comes to redeeming points, with most redemptions letting you get 0.5p per Nectar point.

This new redemption promotion from Esso, offering 600 points for 10p per litre, is an opportunity to get a better deal – between 0.5p and 1p per Nectar point – as long as you fill up with more than 30 litres.

The ‘600 Nectar points for 10p off’ deal ends on 15th November 2023 although the standard ‘300 Nectar points for 5p off’ deal is ongoing. You can read more about the Nectar-Esso partnership here and details of the special redemption offer are in the Nectar app.

    It’s not a better deal.
    It’s the same deal.
Invest twice as much get twice as much in return..
    EG. The same return..
Albeit better than some half a pence returns.!!
I wasn’t excited before and I’m not now.
    Woop woop… !!!

    • Erico1875 says:

Of course its a better deal. If your car can take 60L then you save £6 , compared to £3 a fill up

    • AJA says:

Also the example forgets to mention that you’re paying £3 in Nectar points to get the £6 off your fuel bill, assuming you buy 60 litres of fuel. So actually you’re only saving £3. The standard offer doesn’t save you anything as you spend £3 in Nectar points to get £3 off.

As I said further down I managed to “save” 8p per litre by just ignoring Esso and going to Sainsbury’s instead, without needing to redeem any Nectar points.

      • AJA says:

Oops my maths is out. The standard offer saves you £1.50. You pay £1.50 to get £3 off.

  • Robert says:

Is this better than converting Nectar to Avios?
I do like the sound of the 1000 points App promo, apart from having to give them card details.

    • AllTheGoodNamesAreTaken says:

They accept PayPal too (at least they did when I last used it a couple of years ago)

Again, the last time I checked, similar to redemptions, not all Esso stations support paying by the app and so you have to check on their website to make sure that you will actually be able to use it (or maybe the app lists it too).

Esso don’t actually own any petrol stations in the UK, they are all franchises. Most belong to a few large companies eg MFG who now own Asda but others are more independently owned. As a result there is some variety in how they operate.

      • Robert says:

Thanks for the info. Will take a look at my nearby Esso garages to compare. Currently fuel up once every couple of months at Sainsburys so it wouldn’t be a big saving for me. Got a double nectar voucher for this month also.

  • Adam says:

The 1000 point bonus is for new app users only, but the 2x/4x/6x/500 bonus scheme happens every three months and is for everyone.

  • LittleNick says:

My car never takes more than 25L, often less to fill up, so no use to me. Presumably though the Esso app bonus will apply if you haven’t signed up in the app? Only ever downloaded but never signed up?

  • Mike Hunt says:

The Esso Card available via Blue Light Card gives a constant discount of 4 p off diesel and 3 p off unleaded – more off the super fuels. The discount soon adds up, I use 100 to 150 litres of diesel a week.

  • Mutley says:

Esso St Albans unleaded 156.9 per litre.

Costco Watford unleaded 139.9 per litre. Also free charging for electric/ hybrids.😀

    • Scott says:

I don’t have a Costco membership, nor an electric car, and I live nowhere near Watford. But that aside, this is brilliant info, thanks for sharing.

  • jj says:

I don’t know if this is universally true as I only buy fuel about once per month, but the Esso stations near me are consistently 1-2p per litre more expensive than the local supermarkets. That knocks a chunk of value off these deals.

    • AJA says:

It’s even worse where I live. Yesterday the nearest Esso was selling petrol at £1.587 per litre but the Sainsbury’s just a little further down the road was selling it for “only” £1.507, a whopping 8p per litre cheaper.

      Guess where I went?

      Spoiler: it wasn’t Esso!

  • Will Squires says:

This article should really mention that Esso are rarely the cheapest option in areas where supermarkets (or, better still, Costco) have a PFS operation.

In Nottingham 3-6p of value per litre would be lost straightaway just based on the numbers on the totem vs nearby supermarkets.

The only place this offer makes sense is rural locations, where your only reasonable option is fuelco branded forecourts, IMHO.

    • HampshireHog says:

Yes all quite misleading, probably only a benefit to those driving gas guzzlers in rural locations.

    • CarpalTravel says:

Reminds me of the BP “deals” you see. They are laughably expensive here, even compared to the likes of Shell. A quick check on the PetrolPrices app shows my local Shell Diesel at 164.9, BP meanwhile at 169.9, both prices updated yesterday.

      • Londonsteve says:

I had an offer of 250 bonus point at BP for any fill, even 1l. I took my electric car to fill up a gallon can for the lawnmower. I wonder at what point they’ll work out I don’t have a petrol or diesel car and a bonus can only ever induce a purchase for 5 litres of fuel? There are increasing numbers of us in this situation. A petrol lawnmower meanwhile is unbeatable if you need to do real work, corded electric and battery powered mowers just don’t cut it.
