The airport lounge with its own swimming pool

Reader Ross dropped me a note to flag something which had never crossed my radar before but which looks fantastic.

The airport lounge at Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic has a swimming pool! Take a look:

In fact, there are TWO swimming pools at the airport, one in each of the lounges. The other pool is below.

Ross says that these lounges used to be in Priority Pass but, due to a dispute, withdrew on 1st November. It isn’t a total disaster, since the cash cost to enter is only $25 and this looks like $25 well spent – assuming having a swim overlooking an airport runway is your thing.

The lounges were on the Priority Pass website as of last night so the dispute may have been dealt with (or Priority Pass is just slow at updating its pages ….).

I have just added Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic to my bucket list.

    • Lou says:

When we went there wasn’t a lounge for BA. This was in 2016, so the situation may have changed

      • Tee says:

There was no BA lounge at PUJ last year either – I was offered a $20 F&B voucher instead

        • Paul John Ashmore says:

It was a BA Lounge when I went this September. The pool looked great.

          • Ross says:

The old lounge with pool has better runway views but is significantly inferior in every other way to the new lounge with pool (in the top picture) that just opened.

        • Dutch Schaefer says:

We were also given the vouchers there in August for a BA flight – redeemable in one shop, where $20 gets very little, even by airport standards! For once, the Amex Platinum Priority Pass got access to a lounge though

    • Gordon says:

Very nice destination. I would recommend, I was caught up in hurricane Fiona there last year. But was given a complementary return.

  • Andrew says:

Singapore airport is another one with a swimming pool in the airport – this time as part of the transit hotel and available for non residents just in transit. It’s well worth it to refresh yourself between flights!

  • Dave Roberts says:

Priority pass are slow with their updates. They have been showing that the lounge at Corfu closed for the winter mid October but it was still open last week and almost empty despite the terminal being extremely busy.

  • TimM says:

One step further towards living in an airport.

  • Simon says:

The second photo is the pool you’re more likely to see if you’re flying BA – when I visited PUJ in August the lounge was next to the BA gate. I accessed using Priority Pass. But there’s a lot of building work happening at the airport so this might change.
I wouldn’t recommend going out of your way for the pool (not worth getting wet for, unless you like standing in water while waiting) or the lounge (unless you want to escape from the crowds).

    • Ross says:

Both of these lounges are in Terminal B, about a 10-15 minute walk from each other. The second lounge (in the top picture) is brand new & only opened about a week ago. It’s a MUCH nicer, larger lounge compared to the original Priority Pass lounge. As nice as (or probably nicer) than any AMEX Centurion lounge that we’ve visited.

  • dave says:

I am flying in J in March but was told on the forums here that you do not get access to the lounge when flying BA, is that correct?

  • Oliver says:

I flew out of PUJ in Jan 2022 and used the lounge in the bottom pic with Priority Pass. Things might have changed, but back then there was no lounge access in BA J – they just gave you an airport F&B voucher at bag drop.

It was different being able to have a quick dip before a flight, but not something I would rush to do again. It’s very loud out there and there is a strong jet fuel smell. When a plane taxis in to one of the gates below, it is deafening! They provide towels but changing facilities were quite basic.

I didn’t realise there were two lounges with pools – perhaps worth hunting down the one in the top photo with the strip of ‘grass’. Looks like a bigger pool, and in a quieter part of the airport, so might be a nicer experience.

My other memory of the PUJ lounge is that the gin they had on offer was “Blimey” brand…

    • Ross says:

Yes, the pool at the new lounge is larger and overlooks the private plane section of the airport. The old lounge is very forgettable but the new lounge is the nicest, largest Priority Pass lounge we’ve visited.

    • Chrisasaurus says:

Novelty alone is worth it no?

Though then packing swimwear into your bag for 16hrs until you get home is a little less appealing

  • NFH says:

I do like lounges with outdoor areas, particularly in warm climates. GIB and LPA are good examples. But a pool takes this to the next level.
