A valuable benefit that comes with The Platinum Card from American Express is £400 of annual dining credit. It makes a big dint in the annual membership fee.

Every six months – so it resets on 1st July – you receive:

  • £100 to spend in 160+ UK restaurants
  • £100 to spend in 1,600+ international restaurants

You can spend the money over multiple visits to multiple restaurants if you wish. It doesn’t need to be spent in one go.

One of the most common questions asked in our forum is whether the £100 UK Platinum Dining credit can be used for a restaurant gift card. This is a handy way of using your credit if you don’t think you can make it to a participating restaurant before 30th June or 31st December, depending on the time of year.

If you mean ‘a restaurant gift card’ you can order online then the answer is No.

However, if you want to use your £100 of UK Platinum Dining credit for a meal to enjoy later, the most popular option is a gift card for ‘The Ivy’ group of restaurants.

You must buy ‘The Ivy’ gift cards in person to trigger the £100 Platinum dining credit. Do not buy them online because the dining credit won’t trigger.

You can learn more on the gift card website here but remember – to get the £100 Platinum Dining credit to pay out, you must buy it in a participating branch of ‘The Ivy’. Not all branches are participating.

PS. Remember that reader Tim has created an interactive map of restaurants globally where the Amex Platinum Dining credit can be used. Check it out here.

TORs specifically say that Gift Cards are excluded. Am I missing something here?

  • ervo says:

“Excluded Transactions: Benefit excludes purchases of gift cards and vouchers, transactions
made towards deposits charged upfront by the venue, booking, cancellation, and no-show
charges, takeaway or dine-at-home services”. I bought 2 last year, maybe AMEX has got wise to this benefit

  • ervo says:

Thanks. Maybe these terms were there last time and I missed them. I’ll give it a try before the end of this month and woe betide you if it doesn’t work!

    • Rob says:

Without wishing to state the obvious, if you’re going into a restaurant to buy a gift card, why not just have a meal and remove all risk?

  • hfk says:

If an eligible dining payment was made on the 30th June, but remains pending for a few days, will the eventual cashback be considered H1 cashback or H2?

  • JR says:

Bought giftcard online at Bob Bob Ricard after reading this post. I didn’t get Amex credit though (after 3 days).

    • Rob says:

You won’t, because it has to go through the restaurant’s till. Same reason that online Ivy purchases don’t work.

  • Ian says:

Anyone know if the Ivy can sell gift cards again or will the system suddenly work on 1st July?

    • tusker says:

I bought a gift card in Ivy Marlow this morning – 28th June – with no problem. Chatted to the server about reading of problems with in-restauarant purchases, and he was unaware of the issue.
To answer Rob’s point about ‘why not just have a meal and remove all uncertainty?’, going down the gift card purchase route is a great way to combine a whole year’s worth of benefit (i.e. the pre July spend with the post July spend) for a one-off spend when dining as a group after 30th June.

  • Jane C says:

Do people think today is too late to try and in person gift card purchase? Thanks

  • *missgeekchic* says:

I bought an Ivy Asia gift card in person at the Chelsea restaurant on 24th June but the credit has not yet been triggered. On my Amex statement, it says “Caprice Chelsea Grill London”. How long does the credit take to trigger and can I be confident that it will come through?

    • Rob says:

Is Ivy Asia included on Kings Road? Next door is, can’t remember if Asia is too.

Next door hits your statement as ‘The Ivy Chelsea Garden London’.

    • Gabriel says:

That’s what i want to know. Does “the ivy asia” quality or is it just “The Ivy” ??

      • Rob says:

If the Amex directly does not SPECIFICALLY say that an Ivy Asia in a certain town counts, it won’t, even if The Ivy itself does.
