Report: British Airways First Wing security at Heathrow Terminal 5 to close for 3-4 months

According to reports on X / Twitter from a usually impeccable source, the security channel in the British Airways First Wing at Heathrow Terminal 5 is to close in January for 3-4 months.

This shouldn’t be a surprise, of course. The UK Government has mandated that airports must switch to the new ‘keep your stuff in your bags’ / ‘bring all the liquid you want’ security scanners by June.

British Airways First Wing security at Terminal 5 to close for four months

It isn’t clear why the project will take 3-4 months. Looking at feedback on Flyertalk from people who appear to have inside knowledge, the entire security area will be remodelled at the same time. However, with 24/7 working possible and no airside security constraints, it seems long.

There is apparently no requirement to reinforce the floor to cope with the weight of the new machines – something which is proving an issue elsewhere.

The check-in area in the First Wing will reportedly remain open for qualifying passengers, primarily British Airways Executive Club Gold members and ticketed First Class passengers.

You will then need to leave the Wing and head to South Security. It is reported that there will be a dedicated lane here for those who would qualify to use the First Wing, although as regular Heathrow passengers will know, staff tend to move passengers between standard and Fast Track lanes to even out the flow.

I haven’t seen any reports yet on when the main bank of scanners in Terminal 5 will be upgraded. Time is getting short, and once you get to Easter the volume of passengers will start to pick up.

More on this when we get some formal confirmation from Heathrow.

  • Gordon W says:

My observation at LCY was that the security lines are just as long, because the faster screening meant they could reduce the number of lanes so saving costs. This will benefit the profits of operators, not the convenience of pax.

    • Thomas says:

Great observation, and sadly, possibly spot on !!

    • ADS says:

I flew out of LCY last Monday evening. There were so many bags going into secondary/manual checks, that the security staff had to squish them up to stop them blocking the machine.

I got lucky and didn’t get sent down the dreaded secondary route, and was through security pretty quickly. Although they used to be pretty quick in the “old days” as well, in my limited LCY experience.

  • Novice says:

@Rob, when is this happening in MAN. Security looks new but it tks a yr and they still open luggage and expect things out so I assume they haven’t got the scanners yet or I could be wrong and they are just a nightmare as usual.

Last time security took 16 minutes. I time the entire thing now.

    • AL says:

Diddly squat at MAN is done to improve pax experience. The first thing MAN needs to do is to redo itself, from the ground up…

  • Martin says:

I cannot believe it will take so long Then again, not really surprising given the service we have come to expect from the worlds worst airline

    • Mike says:

I have no urge to defend BA, but this is a Heathrow issue.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      (a) not a BA project

      (b) the three months is apparently what it’s taken at other airports.

  • His Holyness says:

Why not fully refurb all the lounges during this time? Do each, one by one.

    • Jack says:

The lounges have been refurbished especially B gates and the F lounge which have all had new seating , lamps and power sockets installed . You cannot easily close the lounges to refurbish them especially during Christmas time which is very hectic

      • babyg_wc says:

Agreed the “f” lounge toilets, carpets and some of the fixtures are “f”ed and should be refurbed…

      • AL says:

The new seating’s alright but there’s still a tonne to be done in the Flounge. Washrooms are a disgrace, and they could do with getting Rentokil in for a full sweep…

So, yeah, plenty still to be done. But some new additions from the DFS sale were at least progress.

      • Lee says:

True! I hate what they serve there nowaydays. Many years ago it was very good.

  • Track says:

I am sorry, what’s the point of remodelling the area, when there is lack of staff or consistency. One line is sometime closed. Or security simply ‘changing over’ and that happens how often, every 40 minutes?

    Like rearranging the chairs.

  • Lee says:

I think training could happen off-site, where the scanners come from surely.
