IHG One Rewards has announced a new global promotion which will launch on 1st January, immediately after the current deal ends.

IHG One Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo among other brands.

There’s a quirk though – this new promotion will only last for a month.

You need to register here. If you are asked for a promo code add 23421.

How does IHG’s new bonus points promotion work?

The offer runs from 1st January to 31st January 2024.

You must register in advance via this link. Registration is now open.

What will you earn?

As you can see:

…. you will earn double base points on every stay during the offer period.

Reward stays DO NOT count which is unusual. I would have expected incidental spend on a reward stay to earn double base points, but the rules say that you won’t.

Existing bookings DO count so there is no need to rebook anything.  Only one room per stay counts towards the offer, so if you are booking multiple rooms you should put each in a different name.

NOTE: The deal is different for anyone based in the United States. American members earn double base points PLUS 2,000 points for every two different brands visited during January.

What is the bonus worth?

The standard earning rate in IHG One Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (83p) excluding taxes.  I value an IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 83p spent, ie just under 5.0%.

Double base points pushes up your earning to just under 10% of your pre-tax spend.

This means that the offer is geared towards people doing high value stays although no-one is going to complain about getting 10% of their pre-tax spending back in points.

Of course, most HfP readers will have some sort of IHG One Rewards status.  This comes with a status bonus (applies to standard base points only) on top:

  • 20% bonus for Silver Elite
  • 40% bonus for Gold Elite
  • 60% bonus for Platinum Elite
  • 100% bonus for Diamond Elite

Conclusion

I’m not sure why IHG is launching a promotion for just a single month. Perhaps all will become clear on 1st February ….

Click here to register – it’s best to do it now before you forget.

The offer kicks in for stays from 1st January but you can register now.

I’ve got a slightly chunky stay at the ICPL in January to use an expiring Ambassador certificate (booked into a Mayfair room to see what the fuss is about!), so this is a handy little bonus.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

My next chunky trip isn’t until February so I’ll miss out on some chunky points.

Might have a look at swapping a couple of January points bookings to cash though I am trying to wind down my points balances.

Shame these aren’t status earning points though.

    • David says:

That really added something useful, thanks.

  • X2000traveller says:

Jan only — presumably at the request of the FD?!!!

  • Paul says:

I have 16 nights starting on the 28th Dec in 3 different IHG hotels. In every case I am
getting a lot more than 0.4p for reward nights, even against the most restrictive non refundable rates. Indeed so much more, that I bought the points during one of their offers.

I think reward nights also now count towards status with IHG as they do with Hilton but I may be wrong. If correct though, it does give me a decent start to the year to aim for a lounge pass, This time I will be a lot more careful when triggering it. My current pass expires on the 31/12 but the IC stays don’t happen till 2/1. The problem is I triggered it not fully understanding the rules and have gotten precisely 1 nights use out of it! Worse still, I wasn’t able to use the suit upgrade and that expired at the start of December. Hey ho!!

    • Rob says:

      Yes, reward nights count.

I also had a suite upgrade expire last week. To be fair it was semi-deliberate – I was planning a pre-Christmas Paris trip, probably the IC or Kimpton, and then a review opportunity came up (see HfP next week) so I took that instead.

    • John says:

I’m sure reward nights have counted for status for long time, at least in the 12 years I’ve been a member.

I also bought 200k points at 0.5 US cents to use on award stays in January (where 0.6c would be fair value to me, even if the hotels are asking for about 0.8 to 1c for their cash rates) so it looks like I won’t be partaking in this 2x offer

  • Andrew J says:

I’m currently in my 15 year anniversary 3x bonus points period which ends late January – doesn’t anyone have experience of stacking two different bonus point offers or will I only get the 3x, or worse still will registering for this offer override the 3x and leave me with just 2x?

    • Dace says:

In my experience, IHG will stack. However, I would advise looking into the t&c’s.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      Whays the 15 year bonus?

      • Rob says:

IHG has been giving out targeted bonus offers to certain people who have been members for a certain number of years – 15, 20, 25 …. there seem to be various permutations.

    • Deep says:

Guess it should be stacked. However, the 2X bonus points are on base points only, although you might be aware of that already since you’ve been using IHG since 15 years!

    • Andrew J says:

Thanks all. I’ll register and hope for the best – and yes the 3x is on base points too, so as Diamond gives me overall double the points I would normally from a stay (that offer is capped at 20k bonus cumulatively).

    • Barry cutters says:

Mine stacked recently – I got 2k per 2 nights in the recent offer but also 2x on all base spend for being a 10y member

  • dst87 says:

I assume this is based on stay date and not points credited date? I have a stay from 30th Dec to 1st Jan. I’m guessing that won’t trigger this promotion?

  • PETER says:

Not sure what IHG are up to here as it is such a short term offer.

I have no planned stays in January anywhere and am planning hotel stays shortly for trips in March for which we have no visibility. If other chains come out with a Q1 offer, then this IHG offer doesn’t exactly encourage me to book IHG instead.

  • barry cutters says:

    1) Ive just gone to use my F&B vouchers and realised the ones that were due to expire at the end of Dec have all been extended to 30th June 2024. – Good i noticed as i was planning to use rather than lose this week.

    2) i used my ambassador 241 voucher a month or so ago but i never provided it to reception in Mumbai as they didn’t ask. its still in my account. …..any one tried using a 2nd time? it will let me book with it.

    • meta says:

On your second point, do you want your account closed and points forfeited?

      • TGLoyalty says:

And how would that work when IHG has no idea it was meant to have been used in Mumbai but the hotel never took it?

      • Barry cutters says:

I have 2 million points , and stay over 100 nights a year. I’ve been spire and now diamond ambassador for 10y.

        It’s not going to happen

  • Julia says:

@barry cutters, perhaps the reason why they’ve been extended also has something to do why this promotion is only available for 31 days? Perhaps IHG were expecting customers to use their F&B vouchers throughout the year but instead they’ve been hoarding them for holidays only to discover the hotel wouldn’t accept them i.e. Staybridge. By setting the promotional period just for a month people can only earn/add one more voucher to their pot. This makes sense to me but I’ve had three Cosmos so……

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

The reason some vouchers have been extended by six months is because of the poor roll out of them earlier in the year which meant that the vouchers that were clained earlier were harder to use for some people.

Ir’s only vouchers dated up to 31/12 that have been extended (mine that expire on 29/2 havn’t been for example)

There is no relationshiop between the voucher extension (which began earlier in the month) and this points offer.
