Waldorf Astoria Ras Al-Khaimah hotel reopens after a full renovation

We have covered Ras Al-Khaimah in the UAE quite a bit on HfP. It is an interesting holiday option for someone who likes the quality of resort and the weather you get in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, but for a fraction of the price.

The trade off is that, unless you head out into the mountains for day trips, there isn’t much to do in Ras itself. When you’re there, most of the outings recommended by the hotels involve heading back to Dubai!

Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah hotel reopens

Ras is about an hours drive from Dubai so very manageable, especially given the low cost of car transfers in the region. You can also fly via Doha on Qatar Airways – the airport at Ras is on the same scale as London City Airport and you don’t need to worry about queues. The last time I used it, they had to unlock the executive lounge for me.

The obvious hotel choice in Ras is the Waldorf Astoria (review here) which re-opened this week after a full (and lengthy) refurbishment.

It was better than the Waldorf Astoria Palm Jumeirah in Dubai even before the refurbishment, in my view, although the price gap seems to have narrowed following the works.

How to earn Hilton Honors points and status from UK credit cards (April 2025)

There are various ways of earning Hilton Honors points from UK credit and debit cards.  Many cards also have generous sign-up bonuses.

There are two dedicated Hilton Honors debit cards. These are especially attractive when spending abroad due to the 0% or 0.5% FX fee, depending on card.

Looks like the lounge at RKT has closed (or at least it’s not used by QR or PP), I can’t find anything about it on the oneworld, Qatar Airways or Priority Pass website.

  • Graham Walsh says:

Wonder if it’s ok to take a hire car from Dubai Airport to RAK. Thinking it could be a good use of BA Double TP break.

    • Blenz101 says:

Absolutely fine anywhere in the UAE. Potentially even over the border to Oman if you are happy to pay and agree in advance.

      • Rob says:

Remember that the country is the UAE, Dubai etc are just cities which happen to have a high level of self governance compared to Europe. Stopping you driving to RAK would be like Avis stopping you taking a car outside London.

    • Stephen says:

We were at the Intercontinental in RAK in October and hired a car locally – very cheap and driving there was no hassle. I think given the very congested and somewhat chaotic traffic we were in coming out of DXB in a taxi (and less so on the way back) I was very glad someone else was driving for that stretch.

  • Jill Kinkell says:

That’s a long drive! RAK is Marrakesh. RKT is a bit close!

  • blenz101 says:

Looking forward to getting back to the Waldorf, my understanding talking to hotel staff that had been redeployed to other Hilton properties in RAK is that a chunk of the hotel was being converted to branded residences so will be interesting to see if that has actually happened yet.

The other reason for the long closure was apparently to put a casino floor which will open once gambling gets going in the emirate.

In terms of other ‘go to’ hotels in RAK the still quite new Intercontinental is amazing but I’m also looking forward to checking out the Anantra which has Maldives style over water villas.

I hear a few more UK Hilton’s will be introducing pool charges in the next few weeks.

Sadly the new Hyatt transferable awards are already being abused…

    • Hilda M says:

This. A FB group I am in already had a lot of requests going back & forth. Whilst I would be happy to see my Club Access awards put to good use for once, (think I used one in 5 years for a friend staying in the same hotel) my worry would be passing one on and it then being sold on to someone else thus putting my access at risk.

  • Sam says:

With Waldorfs, are any HH Diamond benefits provided, or do they just point blank not recognise, I’ve read that lounge access is not permitted unless you book the club/pearl room rate.
