Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Amex Platinum makes a permanent increase to its sign-up bonus – now 50,000 points

American Express Platinum quietly snuck out a change to its sign-up bonus yesterday.

The standard sign-up bonus has permanently increased from 40,000 Membership Rewards to 50,000 Membership Rewards points.

This would convert to 50,000 Avios amongst other things.

You could qualify for this bonus even if you have a British Airways American Express card.

Amex Platinum increases sign-up bonus to 40,000 points

The minimum spend required to trigger the bonus remains at £6,000 in your first three months.

The representative APR is 694.9% variable, including the annual fee.  The representative APR on purchases is 30.0% variable.

Can you still get a pro-rata fee refund?

Yes, for now.

American Express continues to say (unofficially) that it will stop pro-rata fee refunds in ‘late 2024’. Given that we have been told that we will get a decent period of notice, it is possible that it doesn’t happen now – but I genuinely don’t know.

Would The Platinum Card still make sense without a pro-rata fee refund?

With the new 50,000 Membership Rewards points bonus, yes. Even if you have no intention of keeping the card beyond the first year, and even if pro-rata fee refunds do go away, you’d still get value for your £650.

In terms of hard ‘pseudo cash’ benefits, in year 1 you’d get:

  • 50,000 Membership Rewards points (converts to 50,000 Avios) – which I’d value at £500 if you know how maximise your airline miles
  • £150 UK dining credit to use by 31st December
  • £150 international dining credit to use by 31st December
  • £50 of Harvey Nichols credit to use by 31st December
Amex Platinum increases sign-up bonus to 40,000 points

…. plus whatever value you place on the other core benefits:

  • the two Priority Pass airport lounge passes (valid for a group of four for unlimited visits)
  • Hilton Honors Gold status
  • Melia Rewards Gold status
  • Marriott Bonvoy Gold status
  • Radisson Rewards Premium status
  • Eurostar lounge access
  • the Fine Hotels & Resorts hotel booking scheme
  • the travel insurance etc etc

What we DON’T know is if the £300 of annual dining credits and the £50 per half-year of Harvey Nichols credit will roll over into 2025. If they did, you’d be able to claim another £400 of credits in 2025 before your renewal came due.

I have my own opinion on what might happen but as this is a regulated credit product it’s best that I say nothing! You will definitely receive £150 of UK dining credit to use by 31st December, £150 of international dining credit to use by 31st December and £50 of Harvey Nichols credit to use by 31st December. This is guaranteed.

Wonder if they are planning what they’re doing on amex plats in Spain, limiting the priority pass to 20 visits per year.

    • Rob says:

Would have less impact here because Plaza lounges are excluded from the cap.

  • LittleNick says:

The main hotel status which is very weak is the Marriott Gold which doesn’t get you much, does it get you the 5 nights for 4 on reward or is that Hilton?
Hilton gets you breakfast outside USA
Melia/Radisson both get you enhanced discounts, 3×20% vouchers and Discount booster respectively
What does Marriott Gold get you? A theoretical upgrade to stop you getting a room overlooking the bins?

    • TGLoyalty says:

5 nights for 4, 2pm checkout and when I was gold I still got decent upgrades inc a suite at two RC’s aswell as other brands so not completely useless.

It’s not some silver bullet but as an occasional traveller its better than nothing.

  • Domo1915 says:

I now have platinum personal and plat business. I’m enrolled in the benefits (hotel and car rental) programs on the personal card. If I cancel the personal card do I have to re-enrol with these schemes?

  • A270 says:

Regarding the upgrade link shared on page 1, when I log in, it is taking me to an Amex page that asks me to confirm my upgrade from Gold. I am otherwise not eligible for any sign up bonus. It doesn’t mentioned the 40k upgrade bonus showing on this link. Will they say you weren’t sent the upgrade link or is it open to whoever is able to upgrade successfully?

  • OF says:

Hi – thanks for the summary. I signed up as a Plat customer last October. I used the UK dining credit of £150 before the end of the 2023 calendar year. However, it has failed to appear again on my account in this current calendar year. I called AMEX who told me the dining credits are only available in the membership year not the calendar year so I won’t receive a new dining credit again until my membership renews later this month. Has anyone else experienced this? I note in the article that you could get double UK dining credits in a single membership year straddling 2 separate calendar years.

    • Rob says:

      Not the case.

      • deborah says:

Also, it looks like the dining credit will indeed come to an end Dec 2024. I have just been informed: “This particular offer will not be part of 2025, however, we strive to provide you with the most valuable offers we can.”

      • OF says:

Thanks for clarifying. Just called them again and you are right, which is contrary to the advice they gave me earlier. According to AMEX the offer doesn’t refresh on their app after it’s first used but the credit will continue to be applied once per calendar year regardless of when the membership year ends.

    • deborah says:

I had a Platinum card Oct 2022 and used the UK dining credit Dec 2022 and again February 2023 as the offer reset January 1st 2023. Likewise with the dining abroad credit.

  • S879 says:

My card year ends now. I am not clear whether I will get new credit to use by December 2024 or not. If I get it and use it, will I get a new allowance for 2025 if they continue with this benefit?
