Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

As flagged up by Luxury Flight Club, Etihad has some very attractive flight deals from Vienna to Sydney.

Availability is restricted, but it is fairly easy to search as the Etihad site shows you the headline price for seven days at a time.

If you can make the dates work (the deal appears to run until June-ish) you can book Vienna to Sydney for €2,500 in Business Class.

Whilst Etihad isn’t a member of any major alliance, you can credit miles to Etihad Guest and cash them out for, well, cash, via their PointsPay service. You can also credit to partner programmes such as Air Canada Aeroplan and American Airlines AAdvantage. Details of all of the UK options for earning Etihad Guest miles from credit cards can be found in this article if you want to top up what you earn.

You can book on the Etihad site here.

How to earn Etihad Guest miles from UK credit cards (April 2024)

Etihad Guest does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Etihad Guest miles by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards.

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 1:1 into Etihad Guest miles which is an attractive rate.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, which converts to 1 Etihad Guest mile. The Gold card earns double points (2 per £1) on all flights you charge to it.

Amazing fare! I paid that to fly at xmas in Y and PE!! Shame it’s not running until next xmas!!

  • Chris K says:

The 42hour stop on the way back may put some off, as you’d need an hotel in Abu Dhabi for a couple of nights, which eats into the saving somewhat. But even so, cracking fare these days.

    • bsuije says:

Might be able to benefit from the Abu Dhabi stopover programme?

      • tony says:

Are hotels in AUH expensive? Was just looking earlier and some of the big names seemed to be quite cheap (don’t know about the quality, mind)

        • Rob says:

Beach resorts aren’t cheap (but cheaper than Dubai) but if you don’t want a beach outside your window they are generally reasonable and good quality.

          • Jon says:

What’s best luxury beach resort in Abu Dhabi? Is it emirates palace?

          • Rob says:

Now it’s fully refurbed and operating as a Mandarin Oriental I would guess so, but I admit I’ve never been to any of the Saadiyat resorts.

          • G says:

Best beach hotel is the St Regis Saadiyat. Park Hyatt Saadiyat is ok but a bit dated.

        • The Original Nick says:

I’m heading there now from Madrid. (well, in a couple of hours time anyway) Hotels are fairly cheap if like Rob has said you don’t want a beach resort.

        • david says:

AUH has some of the cheapest places going. Peak summer (it was in the 40s mind you) basic rooms were £40-60. And basic in the sense of what youd pay £300 here.

    • Julia says:

There’s a Premier Inn right across the Road from Abu Dhabi airport which you can walk to from the airport. I’ve seen prices as low as £33.50. It’s perfectly ok for a few days; think T4 Premier Inn with a pool but not so busy. Also, unlike UK Premier Inns, they come up on Hotels. com which you can access via British airways shop – pick up some extra Avios too!

      • david says:

You cant walk to it no more as that terminals been shut down. The new terminal though is only a short shuttle away.

      • Talay says:

Decent restaurant on the ground floor in that hotel too.

        I did it for a 16/18 hour layover going to BKK which saved £1000+ x 3 🙂

    • Super Secret Stuff says:

It’s not a 42 hour stop from what I can tell, it’s 42 hours total journey time. So enough for 1 night in an airport hotel which imho is probably useful to avoid jet lag

  • Jess says:

I flew with them in 2017 from Istanbul to Sydney for about £1750 so this is a great deal. It was a very comfortable flight with really great service. I am returning in 3 weeks with Qatar for 180,00 Avios and £377 each from Dublin to Sydney in J. A fantastic use of Avios!

  • Michael Jennings says:

That’s a fantastic fare. Alas, I have no more holiday days until July.

  • HH says:

This stings. I’m using my 241 to fly to SYD next month for £3.2k + 196k for 2 people. I’d have much rather gone with this deal instead.

    • john says:

Reward flights can be cancelled for a nominal charge..

    • Colin MacKinnon says:

Check availability, if some there then buy and cancel the 241 and get a refund.

    • Chris W says:

      Cancel your redemption!

    • Harry T says:

Those taxes and charges look quite high, did you book before RFS for long haul business came in?

      • Harry T says:

Why not cancel your reward flights for £70 total and book this cash fare instead? (For safety, book the cash fare first if Etihad let you cancel for free within 24 hours, then cancel the 241, in case the EY seats go).

    • Dutchy says:

You can cancel for £35 per ticket, then book this offer

  • rams says:

The 180k miles plus taxes on Qatar looks a bargain if you can get it

  • Bernard says:

    Article needs updating.
You can also credit Etihad to SAS Eurobonus- so to be in the Skytrash alliance and therefore maybe useful in Virgin

  • CamFlyer says:

I was very pleased with Etihad J class last year, South Asia-AUH-LHR. While the seat was older style (i had 2 different configurations, 777 and 887) and not up to Q-Suite or Club Suite, I found the soft product to be better than QR (and BA).

Sadly, that exhausted my pool of AA miles.

    • truthbetold says:

AA miles – used to be exceptional 90k to Oz/NZ but that’s gone now. Would be great for HfP to do a sweet spot review of other schemes focussing on UK/Europe

\what else is AA mileage good for? I have had tons for years and can’t find a good use for them now I rarely travel to USA at $1.25 to the GBP
