IHG launches two targeted points promos for February & March – so don’t expect a global offer

UPDATE – APRIL 2025:  This article is now out of date, but don’t worry.  We produce a monthly summary of the top hotel bonus point offers – please click HERE or use the ‘Hotel Offers’ menu above.

IHG One Rewards has been running what I would call a ‘holding’ promotion for January. Instead of the usual 3-4 month-long offer, it has been running a 31 day deal of double base points. You can register for it here.

(Running a short promotion doesn’t make a lot of sense which is why you see very few of them. A lot of people already had their January stays booked in by the time this offer was announced, so it is less effective at changing behaviour.)

I was expecting IHG to follow this with a big global offer from February, but it seems not.

Some members of IHG One Rewards have been sent a targeted promotion for stays in February and March.

There are two versions.

This is the least generous, although the best for people who only do occasional IHG stays:

It does what it says on the tin. You will receive 2,000 bonus IHG One Rewards points for every two CASH nights you stay in February and March.

Registration via the link provided to you is required. Existing stays count.

We value 2,000 IHG One Rewards points at £8 so you’re getting £4 back per night on top of your usual points.

The second version is better for heavier stayers – although you don’t get a choice over which version you receive, if either:

You’re getting 2,000 bonus points per night here, worth £8, which is a decent return. You will need to do four nights to get anything, however.

If you didn’t receive an email, you’re stuck. The registration links are personalised and so I can’t share them – there isn’t a dedicated promotional code you can try.

The problem with running targeted offers – apart from the issue of notifying people who have opted out of marketing emails – is that you aren’t converting people who normally use other chains. The only people you are reaching are people who are already on your database as active or semi-active members. You won’t be attracting anyone new via this deal.

For those who didn’t receive the offer, it is now likely that we won’t see an ‘open to all’ IHG One Rewards promotion until April.

I know these things aren’t set in stone but I thought 0.4p was the assumed value of an IHG point? So 2000 points about £8? Of more importance when considering reward nights of course.

  • Andrew J says:

Nothing for me, probably because I’m in my 10 year anniversary 3x points period, although that does mean the anniversary offer is watered down somewhat.

  • Julia says:

Thanks for this Rob but I’m so frustrated with IHG just now. We missed the January promotion because it was released too late and now my partner who doesn’t have status has the 2000 offer only.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

I’m diamond and only got the 2k offer!

      • Julia says:

I’m Diamond and got nothing and, I put 130 days their way last year.

        • Crafty says:

Well yes, that explains it directly. Why would they incentivise you further?

          • Julia says:

Crafty – to ensure we put another 130 days through this year….

          • meta says:

But why would they? Since you earned status, you are going to use it anway along with milestone rewards such as lounge access, confirmable suite upgrades, etc . If you don’t use your status, what was the point of staying 130 days last year?

          • Ken says:

Because the cost of £8 or maybe £32 is trivial.

Why brand your scheme as ‘loyalty’ if you are going to unnecessarily aggravate your best customers ?

        • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

“allow an early/late check-out if asked nicely”

That alone is a reason for me to retain at least Marriott Plat and buy IC Ambassador

        • Julia says:

We’re typical digital nomads, we live in hotels nine months of the year and book places to stay in tranches of 5-12 weeks. Once booked a room serves as our base THEN we book holidays from there. It’s not far and much cheaper to travel to say Madrid, Madeira, Gibraltar or the Canaries from a base in Portugal than say flying back and forth from the UK. All the points we earn go towards future hotel reservations. The more days we can reserve with points the more money we have left to pay for things at the hotel i.e. laundry, room service, dining, car hire, spa etc or experiences. No bonus points means higher non-refundable, shorter reservation periods and more moving around. Independent hotels start looking better

I’m not going to move our loyalty @Andy, we never really had any and cementing any 2024 ties are now on pause till April it seems. In the meantime I’ve moved our February and March stays to Marriott and will renew Titanium by April.

  • TGLoyalty says:

I recalled registering for something then dawned on me I had no idea what … turns out it’s 2k per two nights. I’m not a regular IHG stayer so that’s not going to tempt me to switch.

  • ianM says:

Hilton current offer is twice as nice 🙂

  • Hilda M says:

I’m Diamond (hit the 90 night milestone) and got the 8,000 offer. Had already made my plans for February which includes a few Intercontinental nights so it’s a small bonus in the grand scheme of things. Unlikely I will do as many IHG nights this year – spent over 600,000 Marriott points last year, so need to fill up again 😁

  • CamFlyer says:

I’m Platinum courtesy of the Creation legacy, and did not receive any offer. Written while staying in an IHG property, encouraged by the Creation Plat carryover (my fourth IHG night YTD, though two were reward). I like to think I’m the type of customer that such a promotion would target: status not earned through stays, but willing to put more stays to IHG if encouraged to do so and potentially requalify for the status.

    • Roy says:

Platinum through Creation here too, haven’t had any IHG stays in the last year or two, got the 8K offer.

  • ba says:

Another diamond here with no offer!
