TAP Air Portugal opens a new non-Schengen lounge in Lisbon

As well Lisbon being a popular tourist spot in its own right, TAP Air Portugal has been seeing a lot of traffic from HfP in readers in the last year or so due to its aggressive long haul fare deals.

Anyone transferring in Lisbon to a non-EU destination, or simply flying back to the UK on TAP from a short break, can now use a brand new TAP lounge for non-Schengen flights. This will cover TAP services to South America, North America, Africa and the UK.

Open daily from 5am until midnight, the lounge covers 380 sq m and can hold 100 people.

To quote:

The new non-Schengen lounge showcases traditional Portuguese materials such as cork, burel – a Portuguese craft fabric – and tiles, to simulate the typical façades of Portuguese houses.

Passengers can take advantage of dedicated work and relaxation zones as well as a dining area, run by Cateringpor, which will provide hot and cold meals inspired by Portuguese cuisine throughout the day.

Portugal’s warm hospitality is reflected in the lounge’s temporary exhibitions featuring Portuguese artists, curated by Underdogs, an urban art cultural platform based in Lisbon.

One (minor) upside from the UK being outside the Schengen area is that you often get to use a better airport lounge.

As with this new TAP lounge, the main customer in a non-Schengen lounge will be someone flying long-haul on a potentially expensive premium class ticket, and lounges are often designed accordingly.

Nowhere is this more obvious than at Helsinki Airport, where BA status holders on Finnair get to use the luxurious new lounge facilities in the non-Schengen area. Anyone flying intra-Schengen is stuck with a substantially less luxurious lounge.

The LIS lounge is good news.

Previously if you wanted a lounge (and had the time) when flying LON-LIS-USA you had to enter schengen then reclear security , use the lounge, then pass through passport control again to exit schengen to board your flight. All well and good since you previously didn’t get a passport stamp then.

Now this means you don’t have to do that shuffle (and gain extra passport stamps and add a day to your schengen stays count)

it seemed weird for an airline with 22x A330s and 13x A321LRs to fail to have a Non Schengen lounge

I hope the 100 seats is enough capacity for all those South & North American flights

  • NFH says:

I wish they would sort out the so-called duty-free shops in the non-Schengen part of Lisbon airport. The duty-free shops all have duty-paid prices, making them pointless, despite nearly all destinations being outside the EU.

You don’t seem to have picked up on the new Radisson Blu Sheffield that’s due to open this year?

A desperately needed quality hotel option for the city, albeit I’ve never stayed in a Radisson again since they ruined their rewards programme.

Wasn’t aware! I’ve seen the Courtyard being built by the Parkway but not this.

      Very exciting 🙂

      • Dan says:

Yep, prime spot overlooking the town hall/peace gardens too, I think.

        • the_real_a says:

I would appreciate more an edge of town premium hotel with easy parking. The Courtyard is awful, dated rooms, with a consistently awful breakfast to the point of being inedible – the only saving grace are friendly staff and free parking!

          • TGLoyalty says:

The courtyard isn’t even built/open yet how could it be any of those things?

Generally courtyards in the U.K. are new and clean and breakfasts depend on the property but generally okay

Sorry i was referring to the Hilton Doubletree.

  • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Big question is will the non-Schengen lounge serve camel’s drool like the Schengen one

  • Roger that says:

IHG use an alternative definition of ‘adjacent’. The Clifton Hotel, Folkestone is only adjacent to the beach if viewed from a stationary overhead helicopter or drone. It is on The Leas, a fine clifftop walk along the cliffs overlooking the Channel.

Pedestrian access to and from the beach by The Leas Lift (if operating) or The Zig Zag Path. Vehicle access normally via The Road of Remembrance.

Hot news: The Road of Remembrance blocked this week by a landslip.

  • StianE says:

Only slightly related: The OSL Lounge at international departures at Gardermoen is being refurbished. Only half of it is open and it gets crowded quickly. The food offerings are even more sparse than usual. Still no news of any new lounges past passport control.

  • NorthernLass says:

Speaking of new openings – the IC Chantilly (a beautiful property) is now available to book and would make for a nice review trip. It’s in a lovely forested area not far from the famous Chateau de Chantilly (well worth a visit itself), but only a 30-minute drive from Paris. Pricing looks to be around 250 euros/50k points per night, so a fair bit lower than its Parisian counterparts.

    • NorthernLass says:

30 mins from CDG, should have said.

      • Rob says:

        Ooh interesting, thanks.

        • JDB says:

I’m not sure what happened with the Hyatt Chantilly which is now unbadged – now Le Grand Pavillon . My wife stayed there when it was still an Hyatt and was very impressed, particularly at the price point which is similarly low to the IC.
