TAP Air Portugal opens a new non-Schengen lounge in Lisbon

As well Lisbon being a popular tourist spot in its own right, TAP Air Portugal has been seeing a lot of traffic from HfP in readers in the last year or so due to its aggressive long haul fare deals.

Anyone transferring in Lisbon to a non-EU destination, or simply flying back to the UK on TAP from a short break, can now use a brand new TAP lounge for non-Schengen flights. This will cover TAP services to South America, North America, Africa and the UK.

Open daily from 5am until midnight, the lounge covers 380 sq m and can hold 100 people.

To quote:

The new non-Schengen lounge showcases traditional Portuguese materials such as cork, burel – a Portuguese craft fabric – and tiles, to simulate the typical façades of Portuguese houses.

Passengers can take advantage of dedicated work and relaxation zones as well as a dining area, run by Cateringpor, which will provide hot and cold meals inspired by Portuguese cuisine throughout the day.

Portugal’s warm hospitality is reflected in the lounge’s temporary exhibitions featuring Portuguese artists, curated by Underdogs, an urban art cultural platform based in Lisbon.

One (minor) upside from the UK being outside the Schengen area is that you often get to use a better airport lounge.

As with this new TAP lounge, the main customer in a non-Schengen lounge will be someone flying long-haul on a potentially expensive premium class ticket, and lounges are often designed accordingly.

Nowhere is this more obvious than at Helsinki Airport, where BA status holders on Finnair get to use the luxurious new lounge facilities in the non-Schengen area. Anyone flying intra-Schengen is stuck with a substantially less luxurious lounge.

BA no longer flies to Helsinki.

    • Willmo says:

By ‘BA passengers’ I’m sure he means BA exec club members travelling Finnair

      • Alex G says:

I think he means passengers with OW Emerald status (which includes BA Gold).

      • jjoohhnn says:

Or possibly passengers booked on the BA codeshare flight number of the HEL flights?

  • David says:

OT: Is it just me that finds TAP livery childish? Always reminds me of a daycare.

  • Matthew says:

Good news, because based on my visit last week the current TAP lounge is ludicrously overcrowded. Barely a spare seat anywhere, people packing the corridors. Absolute mess.

The vignette and the hie are part of the same building and joined together I believe.

Very good point. Iberia’s lounge at MAD-T4S is another good example of this.

    • Track says:

Yes but Iberia T4 main lounges have very decent food offerings, better on some days than T4S. Ice cream too.

  • Red Flyer says:

Ironic that there is no parking at the new Liverpool Vignette hotel and that site previously used to be a cheap £5 all day wasteland car park before being developed.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

The Platinum Wing at HEL is for F Passengers and OW Emeralds so not all BA Elites get to use it (not that BA fly to HEL anymore)

    Plus it’s only open from 10.30 – 17.30

The Business lounge next door is very good though,

Even the Schengen Lounge is of a good standard even if it does get busy – I was there last week.

    • Rhys says:

Yes, all of Finnair’s lounges are good. They are building a new Schengen lounge, too.

    • Alex G says:

Glad to hear the Business lounge at HEL is also good. Unfortunately, it doesn’t open until 6am. Which isn’t great if you are landing at 4am from TYO with an onward connection to LHR at 8am. Something to bear in mind if travelling on Finnair.

  • AJA says:

Where in Lisbon Airport is this new lounge? Is it located before or after passport control ?

    • Nick says:

The massive clue is in the phrase ‘non-schengen’.

      • AJA says:

OK. But still no idea where in the non schengen bit of the airport it is. Is it closer to gate 47 or is it just after passport control?

        • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Just after passport control so you still need to walk down the N gates pier after leaving it.

          • TooPoorToBeHere says:

AFTER passport control is great news – would suggest editing the article to make this really clear.

Passport control at LIS has been slow and chaotic for me.

          • AJA says:

            Thanks @BWS
