Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • Angelamc11 says:

Thank you. Much appreciated to get clarity on this!

  • Jill Kinkell says:

Many thanks for taking the time to resolve all the issues. Should be very helpful. Pity BA didn’t ask you first as a pilot study to test it out… oh, that’s what they’ve done!!

  • duncan_c says:

Rob – just wanted to check, has someone from BA read this latest article and confirmed in writing they agree it is correct?

  • Stu_N says:

Thanks for doing what BA should have done to start with.

Now it’s set out clearly, it seems a reasonably fair way to make the adjustments needed. The main losers will be (i) anyone hoping to rely on a soft landing to prolong status benefits and (ii) anyone aiming to qualify early in their collection period with a view to getting almost 2 years of status.

  • Paul says:

Why are January and February end dates credited with as stated but April isn’t?

“ re-crediting any tier points and qualifying flights you earned from 1st April 2024 – 8th February 2025”

“ re-crediting any tier points and qualifying flights you earned from 1st April 2024 – 8th March 2025”

    “ , re-crediting any tier points and qualifying flights you earned from 1st April 2024 – 8th April 2024”

This doesn’t make sense. I am an April end date so expected what you wrote but equally would have expected Jan -Feb 24 and Feb – Mar 24. Adding weeks of of tier point collection but not months!?

    • Stu_N says:

The fixed collection year system starts on 1 April 2024 with the year ending on 31 March 2025.

With an 8 April 2024 end date for your current year, you have almost a full year in the new system so only need 8 days’ adjustment to give you a full 12 month earning period.

Someone with an 8 March 2025 end date has only 23 days in the new system so needs the longer adjustment period to make a full year to 31 March 2025.

      Simples?

      • Paul says:

No!! It might be me but someone with a Jan 8 end date could reasonably be given credit for flights Jan 8 to April 8 2024 or Feb end dates having Feb 8 to Apr 8.
The article however that they will have 1st April 2024 – 8th February 2025…. That’s a very long time and extraordinarily generous. Does not make sense. But life is too short to really care

        • Charlie says:

It is pretty straightforward. Although clearly created by accountants and not properly explained by PR. Simply put: no one loses, except those who were counting on a soft landing from gold to silver (or silver to bronze), which will be shortened by up to 11 months. The gainers are those who yield 600 / 1,500 TPs (silver/gold) between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025, who will get their status extended to 30th April 2026, which is a gain of between 1 and 11 months.

  • Clayton says:

There’s still the problem of them not counting anything we earn between yesterday and the proposed, new system, effective date.

Currently ending in December I understand the, kinda rollover to ’26 but the problem remains in that at that point they will look at earnings from 1st April 24-31st March 25. When they do that they will ignore the BAH booking I have 1st week of March that will earn me 320TPs, or more importantly – just over half my required earnings to requalify for silver. My bookings to ensure I requalify this year have been booked and paid for with my other travel being via 241s so not earning & using up accrued leave for the year. Now I’d have to try and secure additional, unpaid, leave just to give BA even more money in the form of another 5 day BAH trip or two 160 earning runs. So BA are l, for all intents and purposes extorting more money from me whilst making me lose money ( unpaid leave) OR ( and this is why I feel the word ‘extorting’ is appropriate) I will be punished and lose my silver status because despite me already paying them to ensure I maintain my level they have moved the goalposts to prevent me from doing so.

Tbh I care not that they’re giving more time in other ways. I’ve planned, budgeted and ensured I kept my level. Anything after my current reset should be going towards my next requalifying not the one I would have hit anyway and especially not when we’re talking to the tune of just over 50% of what’s needed

    • Rhys says:

If you were due to earn/renew your status in your existing year (ie. before 8th December this year) then…you still will? And the status you earn will run until 31st Jan 2026.

You might want to read the article again because I’m not sure you’ve understood it correctly!

    • Dickie_H says:

But BA are still allowing you to earn and keep Silver till the end of your current TP collection year and 12 months thereafter – in line with their current terms.

YMMV, but is it worth pursuing status for such few flights? In any event, in 18 months time you can get back to timing your holidays to align with the new Tier Point collection year, asssuming, that is, you don’t conclude that playing the game is more trouble than its worth ….

  • Ian says:

    Great article.

Would be nice to know how soft landing will be dealt with.

Not intending to earn too many tier points in the next year or so.

But loosing status rapidly will be a big concern.

    • Rob says:

Your soft landing will probably be curtailed. In my case, I have Gold until 30 September 2025. If I don’t renew, my soft landing to Silver will run to 30 April 2026 so I lose 5 months of lounge access from these changes. Assuming soft landings are not scrapped, I would be Bronze to 30 April 2027.

  • His Holyness says:

What about gifting? Would gifting after the card expiry still give rest of the year and year after?

    • Rob says:

It will operate as per what we’ve written here, treated as if the person gifted had earned the status by flying. The exact result will depend on the membership year of the receiver.
