Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • Rm says:

If my Gold status is expiring in August 24 and I am not renewing, does it mean I will be downgraded to Silver as usual in September. Or will my Gold benefits be extended until March 25?

    • Charlie says:

Presuming your year end is 8th July, if you haven’t yielded 1,500 TPs between 9th July 2023 and 8th July 2024 then you will soft land to silver, which will continue until 30th August 2025. Presuming no more TPs are accrued, and everything else remains constant, you’ll drop to bronze until 30th April 2026. Should, alternatively, you yield 1,500 TPs between 1st April 2024 and 31st March 2025, then you will extend your gold status from the point you hit the 1,500 until 30th April 2026.

      • Rm says:

Thank you for your answer. So I guess I am losing with the changes. Not that I am excited about the Bronze benefits, but I guess in case of soft landing I will only retain it from August 25 until April 26.

  • David says:

I am currently Gold with a tier point collection year ending Nov 24. I expect to soft land to Silver this year. Will I retain Silver until Dec 25 (as I would under the current scheme) or will I soft land again to Bronze in Apr 25 (assuming no further TP earning flights are taken)? I thought I was reasonably intelligent but this has had me stumped the last two days!

  • Patrick says:

Thank you for the invaluable analysis. It certainly feels like this is just the beginning of what will be a fundamental re-positioning of the BAEC – or should we say future IAG hybrid scheme – with a fairly big announcement every 6m or so recently. Will your server handle the traffic if/when status earning becomes driven by spend or Avios redemptions simply equate to a cash reduction on ticket price!? Let’s hope we never have to answer that question…I can only imagine the issues with combining Iberia Plus and BAEC accounts down the line. For a start each airline has unique local (hub airport) benefits in the higher tiers, and different Avios earn rates. As someone with significant ties to Spain and the U.K., and local loyalty accounts with each airline and co-branded credit cards in each country, I hope I don’t run in to any issues when the merger arrives.

Whilst it may not merit the longest of articles, and perhaps is fairly obvious to some readers, perhaps a follow up article to this one could be looking at how a member could now tactically book new flights going forwards to maximise the length of status when renewing or earning a particular status level (based on the new concept of a transition period and original legacy monthly end dates)?

  • ianM says:

Excellent month by month summary, just what was needed

  • John T says:

    Well done team!

  • Paul says:

Really helpful – thanks all; it really is disappointing that BA made it all so complex. But this is clarity and gives me a clear “window” in April to get treble points (2x via BAH and one double counted). Shame it’ll be sky high prices then (so why announce now??).

  • Gaynor LJ says:

Thanks for the clarification – a much more logical read than the BA effort!!

  • Shane says:

Hmmm! I’m currently on an extended tier-point run on Malaysian, starting in Adelaide, and including 2 x returns KUL to TPE and taking in the new MH routes to Ahmedabad and Amritsar. My Indian internal flight from Diu to Ahmedabad yesterday was cancelled (“operational reasons” which probably means not enough paid bums on seats) and as it was the only such flight of the day, I had plenty of time to read all about the tier point year-end changes on the 8 hour car-ride that was my only alternative option.

I’m currently GGL with a collection year end of January 8th. Having now retired however, I’d decided that continuing to retain GGL status after this year would be just too much faff and expense (and give me precious little opportunity to cash in the 3+M avios I’ve accumulated). So from Jan 2025, I had planned to be burning rather than earning, with my very soft-landing to Gold for Life.

As far as I could make sense of things yesterday, BA was saying if I renewed by Jan 2025, my status would renew as normal until February 28th 2026, whereas HfP were saying it would renew until April 30th 2026. Not much difference, so I thought I’d save a more in-depth analysis until I had a seat that wasn’t bouncing around as much

Today HfP, having had certain clarifications, and BA are back in line; still not much in it, I thought. But ….

Between Jan 8th and March 31st this year I will earn 1245 tier points and assuming, as is most likely, I only just scrape home as GGL by Jan 8th 2025, if I wanted to renew GGL further, I would need to earn 1245 points between Jan 8th and March 31st 2025; that’s a lot of flying for just 2 extra months of GGL status (from February 28th to April 30th 2026). If however I’d earned all those 1245 points in the period April 1st 2024 to Jan 7th 2025, I’d automatically renew for the 2 months from Feb 28th 2026 to April 30th 2026 with no effort required.

Ostensibly there’s no way for me that collecting 1245 tier points in just under 3 months would be worth the bother for just 2 months more status. But ….. I would also get 2 more space releases and a whole new set of partner cards to distribute, so the decision becomes a lot more finely balanced.

Whether I actually end up going for the extra 2 months status etc. will probably depend on availability of some particularly good One World deals in the first quarter of next year. Let’s see what transpires ….
