Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • James says:

Slightly off topic, my EC account got hacked just before Christmas, all points transferred out and I still haven’t heard back from BA. Maybe they’ve been too busy with this.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      Totally different departments!

You need to call BA and ask the operator to pass a message on to the security team asking for an update.

  • NigelthePensioner says:

At last a month by month personalised breakdown confirming what I eventually understood to be the situation. Luckily my wife and I are already aligned by month of renewal. Thank you Rhys and Rob for this. Looks like we will both retain Gold for as long as we can put up with BA’s declining standards of service and quality……… Then it will just be premium seats on premium airlines – bliss!!

  • James Mitchell says:

This is very helpful. In my case, my year collection year ends 8 Jan 2025. I am presently gold. I will soft land to silver on 29 Fen 2024 (my card expiry)

I have 560 tier points already from a trip in January and I should get back to gold again by May this year as I have a first class ‘holiday’ booked to Bermuda in April, plus I expect 100 points from my Amex card having spent the required £15k in a few weeks.

Is this analysis correct: My new gold status will be from May (or whenever the double points are credited for my April trip) until the new card expiry on 28 Feb 2025 and then continue for a further 12 months until 28 Feb 2026 as would be the case had the latest changes not been announced. Then from 28 Feb 2026 until 1 April 2026 assuming I earn no further points, I will drop to Silver again – but the points earned in April this year will be recredited, to give me Silver earned – which will allow me to keep Silver until 1 May 2027? Also, if between now and 1 April 2026 I earn further points equal to the points ‘lost’ earlier this month, they would be recredited for the 2026 shortened period to allow me to retain gold for a further year?

Thanks so much for being patient with all these individual requests for clarification.

    • Alan T says:

There is no 2026 shortened period. What status you have after 30th April 2026 will depend on what TPs you earn in the collection period running for 12 months from 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026.

There is no recrediting in this period either.

You may have very short soft landing to Silver as I understand it?

    • Charlie says:

Your current end is 8th January. You are gold until 28th February 2024. You will drop to silver on 1st March 2024. As long as the 560 TPs have been accrued since 9th January 2024, and you yield a further 940 TP in May, then you should be gold from then until 28th February 2026. You will drop to silver again between 1st March 2026 and 30th April 2026. Then from 1st May 2026 you will be bronze. Probably. and if everything else remains constant.

  • Umberto says:

    What a mess

  • Paul says:

Try as I might I just don’t understand this.
It’s utterly bizarre that some will have the tier points earned over a period of 7 weeks to almost 11 months count twice, while April end dates have 7 days.
A more pointless complex and bizarre system could not have been thought up. Why not just move everyone to the new date from 1/4/24 at their current status and allow them to keep their current tier points till 31/3/25.

    It’s a cluster!

    • Dickie_H says:

Because those who were due to gain status in the weeks after 1 Apr 2024 would rightly be aggrieved?

  • Stu_N says:

Rob could save a lot of time today by running a bot that replies to every comment saying “for further information, please re-read article”.

    🙂

  • John says:

Still clear as muck! Has any other blog site cracked it – any recommendations

  • MF176 says:

Thank you Rob & Rhys – this is excellent and now very clear. Appreciated.
