Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • Alan T says:

What your status will be between 28th February 2026 and 30th April 2026 will depend on what you collect in the shortened collection period, 9th January 2025 – 31st March 2025 plus the Tier Point Adjustment, made at the start of your shortened collection period, re-crediting any tier points and qualifying flights you earned from 1st April 2024 – 8th January 2025, which will include your holiday.

  • Alan T says:

That was supposed to be an additional reply to the post above from James Mitchell, don’t know why it didn’t tag on sorry?

    • James Mitchell says:

Thank you for the swift responses (in two parts). So, just to be clear, my BA holiday in April this year should yield 840 points – so these will be added (re-credited) to my shortened collection period, earning me silver – which will continue for the following full year? Is this correct?

If I earn another 660 points between 1 April this year and 30 April 2026, I should keep Gold for the shortened collection period and the whole of the following year? I ask for clarification as you suggested that my soft landing might only last a few months, but I don’t think this is correct with the re-crediting. Surely this would only happen is ALL the points needed for silver/gold had been credited before April this year?

I need a stiff drink and a lie down now!

      • Alan T says:

No, if you earned 1500 TPs or more between 1st April 25 and 31st March 25, including the recredit, you would keep Gold until 30th April 2026, then drop to Silver, until 30th April 2027, assuming BAEC keep soft landings.

If you drop to Silver on 28th Feb 2026, you will then drop to Bronze on 30th April 2026, if you did not earn enough Avios between 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026, there is no recrediting after March 25.

        • Alan T says:

No, if you earned 1500 TPs or more between 1st April 24 and 31st March 25, including the recredit, you would keep Gold until 30th April 2026, then drop to Silver, until 30th April 2027, assuming BAEC keep soft landings.

Now edited sorry, forum needs an edit option!

          • Alan T says:

Basically, your 840 TPs, when re-credited, will only impact what status you have until 30th April 2026, and as you’ll be Silver anyway from the soft landing, aren’t going to make any difference, unless you add to them by 31st March 2025.

        • James Mitchell says:

OK – I am clearly not following this. Surely there is a difference between dropping (soft landing) to silver and earning silver (using re-credited points from April of the previous year)? My 840 points re-credited should earn me silver for the shortened period, which should then carry forward for the next full year. What an I missing?

          • Alan T says:

No, because what status you will have after the 30th April 2026 will depend what TPs you have actually earned between 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026. Your 840 re-credit will only count to your status until 30th April 26, anything after that needs to be earned within the period above.

It’s kind of the same as earning 840 TPs in the second full year of a Gold membership, they count for nothing (other than towards GFL) if you don’t get 1500, as you’d soft land to Silver anyway.

You are one of the ones who may get a short soft landing as Rob said.

  • Toma says:

This might be head for points longest article 😂

Thanks Rhys and Rob for all your effect it’s made it simple for a layman like me!

  • Skywalker says:

Just typing this out so I can understand it better on internet paper (and also so that I can have my plan improved upon/corrected by HfPers) 🙂 :

I’m Silver with a November year end, so Silver until 30th Nov 2024 with enough points in the BAEC bank to extend silver to 2025.

In January 2026, I will drop down to Bronze until 30th April 2026 and then after that, Blue until 30th April 2027 and until anything changes.

I will ignore the race to do anything between April 24 and November 24 period, because the status earned during that period will end in April 2026, and I’ll still be Silver until December 2025 anyway, so it’s just a four month gap.

If I am still around to care and if BA tier point chasing is still worth it in 2026, I will start my tier point travelling in 2026, which is just a bit later than scheduled as I would have travelled between 9/11/25 and 31/12/25.

In the meantime I will keep an eye out for status matches – hopefully other airlines have noted BA’s comms blunder (similar to the airline reaction when Delta screwed up!).

    • Charlie says:

If the ‘points in the bag’ have been accumulated since 9th November 2023, then your silver card expiry date will show as 31st December 2025. Presuming everything else remains constant, you will drop to bronze on 1st January 2026 until at least 31st March 2026. If you then yield, say, 600 TPs between 15th and 30th April 2026, that will give you silver status until 31st March 2028. Presuming everything else remains constant!

      • Skywalker says:

Thanks Charlie, they were accumulated since 9th November 2023, however regarding the card expiry date: as of today, it shows card expiry 2024.

November 2024, BA’s IT sees the banked points sitting there, and then should remember it needs to change the date to 2025 (at least – I hope it will!)

I did read somewhere the mechanics behind it, but I forgot where I read this now.

(That is of course, if things remain constant!)

        • Charlie says:

If your year end date is 8th November, and you have accumulated 1,500 points since 9th November 2023, then your gold card expiry date should show as 31st December 2025. I’m an August 8 end date, and went from blue to gold in three months in late 2023 (having been gold for 10+ years prior to Covid), and when I hit the 1,500 my card showed an expiry of 30th September 2025.

          • Skywalker says:

It really doesn’t at Charlie – it’s definitely (and I’m looking at it now 😀 ) 31st December 2024, I’ve found an explanation for it – this taken from a FT post:

            https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/british-airways-executive-club/2133844-how-long-will-i-have-ba-status-3.html

(Obviously this post relates to old BA status earning scheme):

“In the circumstance wherein the OP is already Silver at 8th November and accumulates a further 600 points and 4 BA sectors from 9th November to requalify for Silver before 31st December 2023 they will also be eligible to receive Silver benefits until 31st December 2025 however because there has been no interim ‘downgrade’ to Bronze (which in this example would happen on 1st January 2024) BA’s IT does not recognise the activity as a ‘requalification’ but as a ‘retention’ and the BAEC account and App will incorrectly show a ‘card expiry’ of 31st December 2024 instead of 2025.

In previous discussion on here it has been stated that at the following Tier Point anniversary (i.e. 8th November 2024) BA’s IT will catch this error and amend the card expiry date to the correct date of 31st December 2025”

  • Lula says:

They seem to be at least perfectly content, if not actively intending, to reduce the number of status holders. The simpler (and to most more generous) way of doing this would have been to extend status from 2025 to 1 April 2026, which for May year end people would have resulted in 10 extra months, and those with a January year end a 1 month extension. But they have instead shortened most people’s years by coming up with a complex way of calculating it.

    • Rhys says:

…and giving everyone up to 10 months of extra status would have led to everyone here moaning how busy the lounges are because of all the ‘extra’ status holders!

Can’t have it both ways, unfortunately.

    • JDB says:

@Lula – I don’t think people would have been happy with any method of introducing this change. It was a bit confusing and there is always a big rush to criticise any change rather pausing for a calm, rational analysis.

On your suggestion, those that only got a one month extension would be unhappy as others got ten months. There is no pleasing everybody.

In reality, this changes very little for BA’s most loyal, regular passengers but does impact more those just scraping into their chosen tier, positive for some and negative for others. Much of the complaining comes from the timing of double TP bookings, but that ought to be looked at in the round given the extraordinary generosity of that offer and measured against complaints of over full lounges.

      • Lula says:

@JDB completely agree that there’s no pleasing everyone. It was just an observation that they are content to reduce status length for many when they had alternatives.

  • Andrew J says:

I’m still not clear if my reading of this is correct – as a Feb 8th end person, does this effectively mean that any TPs I earn between 9 Feb 24 and 31 March 24 are wasted, as only my TP earnings from 1 April to 31 March will count towards my status from 1 May 2025? On the plus side if I don’t re-qualify, I’ve got an extra month on my card to 30 April 25 rather than 31 March 25? Or have I completely misunderstood.

    • Rhys says:

Your upcoming membership year – starting tomorrow – will be treated under the old rules. Suggest you re-read the article again!

    • Alan T says:

No, because they will count to what status you will have until 31st March 2026. The recrediting will only impact what status you have been then and 30th April 2026 anyway.

If your membership year renews on 8th February 2024:

Your tier point collection year will renew on 9th February 2024 and continue as normal until 8th February 2025
Any status earned or renewed during this period will be valid until 31st March 2026

    • Andrew J says:

Ah ok so basically no change then for now. But I should avoid travel in Feb and March 25 as the TPs earned then are worthless as my new earning year starts in April 25 to March 26 for my card to be valid until end of March 2027.

      • Adrian says:

Hi Guys, i have the same question as Andrew as an 8th feb’er, any ideas?

Ah ok so basically no change then for now. But I should avoid travel in Feb and March 25 as the TPs earned then are worthless as my new earning year starts in April 25 to March 26 for my card to be valid until end of March 2027.

        • Adrian says:

Update to mine and Andrew’s question. In the Facebook BA gold group one person says no credit for the flights between 9th feb 25 – 31st March 25 (if your an 8th feb) one says GGL line says points from that period will be moved forward in to April 26 TP year, both can’t be true.

It’s not ‘worthless’ because TP earned in that period count towards your 1 April 2024 to 31st March 2025 year, driving your status to April 2026.

Obviously if you are concerned about status in the year to 30 April 2027 then you’ll be earning those TP from 1 April 2025 onwards.

  • Shane says:

So despite what they appeared to say yesterday, some of us will lose time being Gold? My current year ends 08 August and I have a BA holiday in early September 2024 which will get me 1,520 TP. It would have been valid until 30 September 2026, but looks like that will now be cut until 30 April 2026 (so I lose 5 months)?

    • Rhys says:

That’s correct. Anyone hitting status very early in their (old) membership year is losing out.

      • Alan T says:

Yep, I’m going to lose 7 months when I re-qualify fully within my 7 week grace period later this year.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

@Rhys what does ‘very early’ mean?

        I’m an 8th November-er

Based on my already flown and anticipated flights I’ll likey (re) qualify for Gold in May/June.

Is that ‘early’ or so you mean if I had (re) qualified between 8/11/23 and 31/3/24?

    • Charlie says:

It depends on when BA update their system. Although the new TP year starts on 1 April 2024, BA don’t need to change their IT until 2025. Thus, it may be the case that you get given the 30th September 2026 end date in September 2024.

  • Nicola says:

With this new system, can i still retain silver by flying 50 sectors? That’s how I normally achieve it…

    • Rob says:

Yes, but how that impacts your years I don’t know. I can only assume that the same rules apply, eg flight segments done in transition periods will be carried over.
