Confirmed (we think): How BA’s tier point collection year changes affect you

There has been a lot of confusion about yesterday’s announcement that British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years, starting on 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

Rob and I spent all morning yesterday trying to parse BA’s cryptic and clear-as-mud information. It’s not just us either. Our article yesterday has over 350 comments, confirming that confusion was widespread. The FlyerTalk thread on the subject is even longer, at over 650 posts.

These are people who know the British Airways Executive Club better than anyone else. If we’re confused, then your average points and miles collector has no chance!

Confirmed: How BA's tier point collection year changes affect you

After multiple back-and-forths with the BA Press Office and the BAEC team, we have now confirmed how the changes will affect you. We think.

Part of the complexity is that everyone is treated differently, depending on your membership year. For this reason, we are breaking it down month-by-month. All you need to do is look at the relevant section for your membership year.

This is a very factual ‘how it works’ article. Yes, you may (or may not) be getting status for a shorter period than you anticipated. Yes, you may (or may not) be short-changed by a shorter than expected soft landing – if they even continue, given that Iberia does not have them and the programmes are being aligned. Our only aim here is to tell you what is happening without comment.

  • Richie says:

Are eligible flights and qualifying flights the same?

  • babyg_wc says:

    Is my thinking correct ?
Currently – Silver with 200TP, membership ends 8 Aug.
    Apr-Aug 2024 Earn 400TPs- renew silver till sept 2025.
    Aug-Mar 2025 400tps re-credited, earn just 200TPs to renew silver till april 2026?

    • Rhys says:

      Yes

      • babyg_wc says:

great thanks for confirming Rhys! The double TPS via BAH, and this one off double-dipping seems to create a small window of opportunity..

  • Damien says:

My tier collection ends in September. I booked a HAM-ICN with Qatar in October with BA position flights that’d make me Silver for effectively 2 years. Based on what I’m reading, that’ll no longer be the case. Instead it’ll be till April 26. So I’ll lose 6 months of status.

  • JK says:

When TPs are re-credited, do we know if they’ll count towards Lifetime status again? I imagine not, but who knows!

As a Jan 8th BA baby, trying to figure out the best way to game this, especially to get those last 10k TPs for Lifetime Gold.

  • Alastair says:

I raised this in the older (now closed) thread and I haven’t seen an answer so I want to check again. I’m a bit unusual here in that having been Gold through work travel (mostly WT+ so a LOT of travelling) I’ve now retired. I’m about 7000 short of GFL so I thought that’s a sensible target to get to.

Now… my current year end is 8th January. I’m currently on an AY TP run but my intention always was to do most of my flights after 1st April to get to GGL (5000 points) before January 8th. SO…

When I hit 5000 TPs (probably sometime in November) I will be GGL from then until the end of Feb 2025. However, I will then be in a new tier point “year” from 8th Jan to the end of March, but with all the flights I have taken since 1st April 2024 counting for this as well. (I know the double counting won’t impact GFL – but read on…).

Now, I will actually ALREADY have done the 3000 TPs required to renew GGL between 1st April 2024 and then, so my GGL should renew at the lower threshold level immediately giving me GGL until end of April 2026. I’ll still be a little short of the GFL threshold, but if I do another 3000 points between 1st April 2025 and the end of March I will have hit the GGL threshold for an additional year (until April 2027) and have GFL beyond that (a nice soft landing).

Given that GFL is the only level (as I understand it) that renews at a lower level than the original threshold (3000 vs 5000 points annually) I’m just a little concerned that the goalposts might be different – but can anyone confirm this with BA? I

  • JR says:

Has there been any mention of a change in the 2 week grace period? I have a trip planned for after 9 March that I will pull forward if the grace period will no longer be applied. From how I read the article prior to 1 April will be completely the same, but thought I’d double check with the hive mind…

    • Rob says:

      No

      • JRich says:

To add a DP. Spoke with a knowledgeable agent on the phone today and she said 2 important things:

“The 2 week grace period will continue to be honoured before and during the transition period. The soft landings between tiers will continue to be honoured in the new system.”

So hopefully that will put others mind at ease.

  • Ian G says:

Has anyone else got this issue? My tier points year ends 8 Dec. Bear with me this is connected!
I re-qualified for Gold last September (23) so was expecting under the old rules to have the rest of 2024 as Gold but unexpectedly got downgraded to Silver on 1 Feb 24. I called up the BA Exec line and the helpful lady did some maths and confirmed that there was an error and in her opinion I would be re-credited Gold in the next 7 working days (still waiting but only 2 days gone so far). She said there was an issue with Holiday bonus tier points not registering in the IT system properly. So, assuming all is well and I get bumped back to Gold – will this be seen as a status earned and therefore under the new rules it will expire 31 Jan 26 or April 26?

  • Angela says:

If I cancelled a retun flight for 2, I would expect a cost. This turned out to be huge. But I had used my avios towards the flight costs. Non of these were refunded. Is that correct. ?

    • Rob says:

If you booked a non refundable cash flight and part paid with Avios then the whole thing is non-refundable.
