The huge Club Eurostar reward seat sale is live – but Amex transfers are still down

Eurostar has launched the big Club Eurostar points sale which we flagged last month.

It is surprisingly generous. The discounts are substantial and the travel period covers virtually all of 2024.

There’s only one snag – transfers from American Express Membership Rewards to Club Eurostar are still down. Eurostar was hoping to have it fixed by today but it was not to be. I was told yesterday that they are still hopeful for a fix before the offer ends.

Unless Amex transfers restart, the sale is restricted to those who already have enough points.

Eurostar reward seat sale

Club Eurostar has never run any sort of points sale before AFAIK, yet alone one this generous.

It is possible that it is being done in response to the ‘no notice’ points devaluation when Club Eurostar was launched last year. The sale reduces reward prices to what they were before October 2023, adjusted for the 20% points uplift everyone got as part of the restructuring.

When is the sale and when can you travel?

Here are the sale rules:

  • you can book until 5pm on 16th February
  • you can travel until 3rd November
  • you can also book for travel on ex-Thalys services in Europe, for travel until 7th September

Remember that the Paris Olympics run from 26th July to 11th August and hotel availability will be exceptionally hard to find during this period. You may also want to avoid the French Open tennis which runs from 20th May to 9th June.

For Amsterdam, note that from 14th June until the year end you will need to change trains in Brussels on your return. This will add 1-2 hours to your travel time. Outbound trips are not impacted.

Eurostar redemptions points seat sale

How many points do you need in the sale?

These are chunky discounts, especialy as you can redeem on EVERY train on every day, with no blackouts, as long as cash seats are bookable.

The T&C do say “Reward Tickets at the promotional rate are subject to availability” but it isn’t clear what this means in practice.

Standard

  • 600 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 1,000 points)
  • 900 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 1,500 points) for trains where the allocation of regular priced reward seats has run out

Here’s an example:

Eurostar reward seat sale

Standard Premier (‘Comfort’ on ex-Thalys trains)

  • 1,200 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 2,000 points)
  • 1,500 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 2,500 points) for trains where the allocation of regular priced reward seats has run out

Business Premier

  • 1,800 Club Eurostar points each way (usually 3,000 points) – this pricing applies to all services

Are there any special terms and conditions?

It seems not.

The only thing to remember is that you cannot cancel a Club Eurostar redemption. You can change the date but not cancel it. It’s not clear if the redemption would reprice at the normal rate if you change the date after the offer has ended.

Let’s hope that American Express Membership Rewards transfers can be brought back in the next few days, since these would be good value redemptions. The transfer rate is 15:1 so you’re looking at 18,000 Amex points for a return Standard ticket.

How to get Club Eurostar points and lounge access from UK credit cards

How to get Club Eurostar points and lounge access from UK credit cards (April 2025)

Club Eurostar does not have a UK credit card.  However, you can earn Club Eurostar points by converting Membership Rewards points earned from selected UK American Express cards

Cards earning Membership Rewards points include:

Membership Rewards points convert at 15:1 into Club Eurostar points.  The cards above all earn 1 Membership Rewards point per £1 spent on your card, so you will get the equivalent of 1 Club Eurostar point for every £15 you spend.

American Express Platinum comes with a great Eurostar benefit – Eurostar lounge access!

You can enter any Eurostar lounge, irrespective of your ticket type, by showing The Platinum Card at the desk.  No guests are allowed but you can get entry for your partner by issuing them with a free supplementary Amex Platinum card on your account.

French Open. So that’s why the night I need a hotel in Paris at the end of May is so damn expensive!

  • Rich says:

Eurostar is one of the better train co’s in terms of releasing availability, IIRC. They’re booking into October right now.

Contrast that with UK (3 months), DB (2 months), and Spain & Italy (whenever they feel like it).

Airlines are the outliers, I think. The ability to book a year ahead is unusual (and for many people, unhelpful. I’d rather all the cheap seats didn’t get snapped up by highly organised people!).

Train times don’t change dramatically as flights, because of the logistics of it all. But integrated ticketing would help immensely, so the people are protected from missed connections.

    • anuj says:

imo the truly cheap flight tickets don’t appear till much sooner to departure, the highly organised are usually snapping up more expensive tickets.

Laos is three days although the app now allows overseas bookings with non Lao sim since January update

Amex transfers are down and I need 100 points. What other quick options are? Are Accor transfers instant?

  • PH says:

Hmm so in the biz prem example, we’re looking at 54,000 MR points for a return that always costs £550… maybe £10 worth of value to be had if we reckon 1 MR point is worth 1p… (but think there’s less flexibility on a biz prem redemption vs. cash fare)

    • Tom says:

Not to mention the extra Club Eurostar points you would earn on the cash fare.

  • Roy says:

If it wasn’t for the continuing lounge access, I’d be starting to conclude that Amex and Eurostar had parted ways. I mean, there’s no mention of Eurostar on the MR transfer web site except for the usual pay with points.

Here’s hoping that it really is just an IT issue. Seems unconvincing (how long has it been?)

    • LittleNick says:

At the new normal Eurostar redemption rates, 15:1 is appalling and not worth bothering it. If Amex to Eurostar transfers come back when sale redemptions are over it should be 15:2 such that Amex points are not devalued so badly otherwise it’s a complete waste of Amex points

  • Mark says:

Personally I find the change rules on Eurostar reward tickets really strict. You can change only once – after that your points are gone. For me this is too risky, esp for a Business Premier class ticket.

    • Lady London says:

Yes, as well as releasing at least some tranches of tickets much further in advance (and my question hoped to find out if there are cross-country or other rail restrictions that block this) £40 or so transaction fee for changes really does stop a lot of bookings.

Basically I only book on Eurostar when there are prices I can afford to throw away – and much closer in than I would like – as the thought of their change fees is literally offputting.

I wish I could book 8x per year and more is not out of the question but their selling strategy just doesn’t make that work for me.

  • Andrew says:

I think the Amex / Eurostar link might have come to an end. I received this in an email I received from Eurostar –

“I have spoken with our Partnerships Lead and we are no longer linked with with AMEX, both companies have been removed from the other’s partnership websites and there are no plans to return this link. This decision was made a Board Level.”
