BRIT award winner Raye plays Hilton’s Secret Socials gig!

On Tuesday, I attended the latest of Hilton’s “Secret Socials” gigs at a central London hotel – this time the recently refurbished Hilton Park Lane. As you can see below, the hotel went all-out on flower arrangements!

Tickets were available for 90,000 Hilton Honors points per pair, which we’d value around £300. You weren’t told who would be performing (past concerts had featured Kylie, Stormzy and Ellie Goulding) but the tickets did include unlimited champagne pre- and post-concert as well as canapes. Still, you were taking a punt by redeeming blind.

This Secret Socials was a little more special than usual because it was the first one to follow Hilton’s recent partnership with the BRIT Awards. In fact, the awards ceremony had just happened a couple of days before, and Hilton did say when tickets were released that it had nabbed a ‘BRIT nominated’ artist for us.

This is only the fourth time that Hilton Honors members have been invited to one of these events. They are separate to the summer gigs that Hilton used to run pre-covid which were exclusively for Hilton Honors members, and included Bastille and Jessie J.

The seats are usually given to surprised hotel guests who just happen to be booked in that night, with others going to Hilton’s charity partners and members of the artist’s fan club.

Can you guess who the special guest was on Tuesday night? It was no other than Raye, whose life has just changed following her record six wins at the BRITS. Embarassingly for the BRITS, she is the first woman to win songwriter of the year – shocking, given the likes of Adele, Amy Winehouse and others.

The ballroom of the Hilton Park Lane was set up beautifully with rows of love seats and armchairs:

Raye did a 45-minute set with a small string section, some brass and (I counted) eight backing singers! She was chatty throughout, still shocked, I think, that she had taken a record six wins.

Seemingly taking a note from Jacob Collier, she tried to get some audience participation going by splitting the audience into four and teaching us some harmonies. Unfortunately, the people at the front were not particularly musically gifted (they sounded like a bunch of lads at the pub on a Tuesday night….) and she humorously gave up.

We’ll let you know when tickets for the next Secret Socials gig become available, but they have become a victim of their own success and are snapped up very quickly.

  • nathanbbr says:

Absolutely lovely evening!! Worth the 90k points without a doubt. A fair few celebs walking round with the other guests made it feel really exclusive too.

  • Andrew J says:

Why are we guessing who the artist was half way down the article, when it says who it was in the headline?

    • daveinitalia says:

My guess is the headline was changed before publication. It might have been something like ‘We go to Hilton’s latest Secret Socials gig’ originally.

I feel like I’ve spent too much time on the BA FlyerTalk pages as I feel totally unfulfilled reading this review because I was more interested at what the champagne on offer was. I never even touched the stuff in my bmi days, so it’s definitely the BA forum to blame!

Knowing my luck I’d book one of these and end up with Michael Bublé and unlimited Castelnau

  • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Audience participation. Shudder. As a child I used to hide behind my mother’s sunbed to avoid the kids club entertainers.

  • Nick says:

It was a great evening’s entertainment, and very well organised by Hilton, as have been all of these, and similar events been, in the past, with no skimping on the good quality food & drink. Sure, they’re getting a bit pricey now, but so are so many of the other similar offerings from other groups.

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

The chains are defo pushing these experiences. Any pushback on the increasing costs of redemptions and inability to find value in ‘the game’ now gets met by chain reps with “Have you tried our very special experiences though?”

Well, no. No, I haven’t. Cos I collect hotel points to fund hotel stays, not to attend concerts with unknown performers.

  • Keith says:

Songwriter of the year was only introduced in 2022 so whilst Raye was first female inner it has only been won twice before.

  • Andy says:

It’s become very predictable. Not the ‘Secret Socials’ event – the comments that follow. “I’ve never heard of them”, “I wouldn’t use points for that”, “There’s a spelling mistake in the third paragraph….”. These types of contributions don’t actually ‘contribute’ anything. Unless you were there, why should anyone care whether you would or wouldn’t spend points on the experience or whether you’ve ‘heard’ of the artist? I wasn’t there, but it seems that those who were there had a great time. I’m pleased for them.

    • Ken says:

      Indeed.

Bearing in mind how much gig tickets have increased, especially with dynamic pricing, then this would a fantastic redemption if you are a fan.

    • lumma says:

I think it’s fair to say however, that the first three were genuine superstars compared to Raye

      • Rob says:

Kylie is a genuine superstar. I think if you put Ellie Goulding in that category you’re deluding yourself! Stormzy is probably higher up the list than her.

        • geoff says:

you are deluding yourself, in no way is STORMZY comparable to Ellie – “English singer Ellie Goulding has released five studio albums, two remix albums, eight extended plays, 46 singles (including 10 as a featured artist), 11 promotional singles and 43 music videos. As of February 2023, Goulding had sold 27 million albums and 216 million singles, and amassed 43 billion streams worldwide.[1] Additionally, she had sold over 1.5 million albums and over 4.3 million singles (including collaborations) in the United Kingdom alone as of February 2014.[2]”

          • Rob says:

In terms of ‘status’ though …. I saw Ellie at the BRITs and no-one was particularly enthused.

I dislike Stormzy but he has my respect for his position in the industry.

    • Rob says:

Comments on value for points and factual errors are welcome.

Whether Raye is your cup of tea or not, less so.

      • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

Yeah, this. I see these experiences as cover for diluting the points value on the hotel schemes’ main propositions – namely, free nights.

        • TGLoyalty says:

Except free nights probably cost them much less

This is about creating memories and moments money can’t really buy (for most)

      • BJ says:

Except in this case the value of the reward is mostly, almost entirely, related to what one thinks of Raye (as an artist, just yo be clear).

      • geoff says:

What position? a flop album and nobody outside the UK as ever heard of him. this is just pure nonsense

  • Occasionalmiler says:

What a fantastic night. Thanks so much HfP team for the heads up. I don’t think I had ever heard a Raye song before but loved it. She put on a great show.

  • BJ says:

So what’s your contribution @Andy, other than that you feel entitled to speak for those who were there despite not knowing who was there because you were not there yourself and therefore are totally clueless as to who enjoyed it or didn’t? It seems unlikely to me that everybody there was a fan so it is unlikely that everybody enjoyed it … like the article stats, it’s a punt. Readers do not need to be tjere to hold and express an opinion in the value of a reward!

What exactly makes your comment any more valid and any less predictable than that of anybody else?

    • Rhys says:

You don’t have to be a fan to enjoy the night, BJ 🙂 Whilst I had heard of Raye, I hadn’t actually listened to her album, but she was a great entertainer.

I think it’s safe to say that anyone redeeming will be doing so fully aware that it could be anyone, but on the basis that seeing a (Brit-nominated) live performance in an incredibly intimate venue is worthwhile!

      • BJ says:

A lot of truth in that I think but the potential is still there to be hugely thrilled or hugely disappointed in the punt. I don’t doubt that those who are less thrilled will stil make the best of it and these things and try to have a good time. It was interesting that you said her patter was good which would help too.

        • Chabuddy Geezy says:

Newsflash: boomers like to complain they have not heard of various contemporary singers.

(Not particularly aim at you BJ,more the other commenters when a Secret Socials articles go up).

          • BJ says:

Closing in on 57bsnd admittedly not up to speed on contemporary music but I have listed to Raye 🙂 It was on that basis I made my comment otherwise it’s very unlikely I’d have bothered.

    • Andy says:

“not knowing who was there” – Rhys was there and enjoyed it. Same for nathanbbr and Nick. So, I’m not clueless and not speaking for those who were there; they’ve done that themselves. I’d also argue that the value of these types of rewards is entirely subjective, as you’ve commented above – so you would have to be there to express an opinion on the value of the reward, precisely what the attendees have done. I agree with you about the validity of my comment, though – it has none. Predictable? Banana.

      • BJ says:

I think at the time of your comment only Nick had already posted. Besides, I foubt three people is enough to be representative of the audience. I disagree you nerd to be there to express a value judgment, familiarity with the artist is reason enough I think. Bone of this is what really nothered me about your comment anyway. It was more that I thought your comment was to an extent discouraging of reader engagement. We don’t have to like what each other has to say all the time but I think we’ve got let people say what they want to say provided it is on topic and not extreme. Since it’s creation moderation at HfP has been light and for the most part has worked extremely well and continues to do so, it has rarely descendeded into the hysteria and abuse common of many other forums. For this reason I don’t think it is necessary to constrain the discussion by excluding thevtype of comments you called out. That is nit to say your frustration is without foubdation, just that we cannot all expect to be happy all the time. Look where it’s gone since our initial exchange… sone are now arguing over the merits of Kylie v Ellie v Srormzy! Sometimes you cannot beat them so you just have to join them 🙂
