How many tier points does each British Airways flight earn?

How many tier points do you earn from a British Airways flight?

We haven’t updated our tier point calculator for a while so it was time for a refresh. I think all the new routes have been added although we may have missed the odd route closure – let me know in the comments.

It lists every British Airways flight from London together with the tier points that you will earn in British Airways Executive Club.

How many tier points does each British Airways flight earn?

Can’t you do this on the BA website?

Not in a full list, no.

If you want to know how many tier points you earn for a particular British Airways flight, there is no official list.  You need to go to ba.com and use the BA Tier Point Calculator page, route by route.

The official British Airways tier point calcuator isn’t ideal, especially if you want to plan a trip to maximise your tier point earning.  You cannot, for example, easily find which Club Europe routes earn 160 tier points for a return trip instead of the usual 80 tier points.

We have created this table as a one-stop reference – our own Head for Points British Airways tier point calculator.  It is a sister resource to our ‘list of Avios redemption pricing for all British Airways routes’.

How many British Airways tier points do I earn flying to ….?

The list below calculates the tier points you earn for British Airways flights from London.

The tier points shown are for a one-way flight.

For simplicity we have shown all travel classes although an increasing number of long-haul routes do not have First Class.

To earn British Airways Executive Club status, you need to earn:

  • 300 tier points in a membership year for Bronze
  • 600 tier points in a membership year for Silver
  • 1,500 tier points in a membership year for Gold

This chart is ONLY for direct British Airways flghts. Tier point earning for partner airlines works slightly differently – flights under 2,000 miles are treated as short-haul (40 tier points each-way in Business) and the remainder as long-haul (140 or 160 tier points each-way in Business – the ultra-long Qantas flight from Heathrow to Perth shows as 240 tier points each-way).

You cannot earn status purely from partner flights. You also need four one-way cash flights on British Airways or Iberia, or two for Bronze, in your membership year.

Key:

  • ET/WT = Euro Traveller / World Traveller (short-haul economy and long-haul economy)
  • WTP = World Traveller Plus (long-haul premium economy)
  • CE/CW = Club Europe / Club World (short-haul business and long-haul business)

*Tel Aviv is currently treated as long haul, but will be treated as short haul – with a corresponding drop in tier points – from April 2025

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

And before anyone starts yes HEL isn’t operated by BA and it’s also an exception to the 2,000 mile short / long haul rule in that it gets 80 TP even thought its less than 2,000 miles (and that’s also the same for the MAN-HEL AY route as well)

    But exceptions are allowed!

    • riku says:

HEL-EDI is also treated in the same way. Ironically HEL-DUB gets half the tier points of flying to the UK even though you fly over the UK on your way to Dublin.

    • Gordon says:

      “And before anyone starts”

Has the hfp forums reached the stage that the first poster at 5:27 starts with the above in anticipation of yet more negative comments! I know there are many glass half empty posters on here, but come on it’s Sunday!

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

So your only contribution to criticise and add a negative comment?

      • Rob says:

HEL should have come off, sorry.

        • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

          No need to apologies

No keep it on. It’s valuable for TP runners and those beefing to get to HEL to start their AY redemptions to Asia!

Perhaps just add a note to say why it’s added?

  • Ben says:

Probably don’t need to include St Petersburg

    • Stuart says:

Narita can probably be removed as Tokyo is listed. Is Durban still appropriate in your list?

    • Alex Sm says:

BA stopped flying there in 2019… HfP shd be more careful when recycling old materials 🤓

  • Paul says:

Really really useful thank you. Is it possible to redo this just for Business and First so that it all fits and is legible as even here Girstnis falling off the page.

    • phantomchickenz says:

That’s tour display rather than the page. It’s an easy cut and paste into a spreadsheet to manipulate at will.

    • Gordon says:

For quickness, just Copy and paste onto notes on a tablet etc, to see all at a glance!

      • Rob says:

If you’re reading it on a mobile you can swipe the table across.

        • Gordon says:

Yes, but on notes you do not need to do that, as you can see all on the page.

  • Speedbird676 says:

I know it’s how the data is structured on BA.com but given WTP, Club and First earn the same tier points regardless of being Low or Flex those columns could be combined, saving three columns.

  • riku says:

The four flights do not have to be on BA. Just a flight with a BA flight number. They could be operated by AY or AA and they will still count towards the four BA flights needed for Silver/Gold so long as you book them with a BA flight number.

  • Ian says:

You say that the chart is only for BA flights, yet the chart lists routes that are not flown by BA?

Or is this a case of BA including them, so you have as BA routes?

  • Derek says:

Random question… with the move to Revenue based collection for Avios, could BA move to the same for Tier points in the future? Would it even be a consideration bearing in mind Hotel tiers work in that way (Accor for example)

    • Rob says:

Likely it will move to some sort of spend element, yes, as all the US airlines have – but its trickier for BA because I think people do more partner flying here than your average American, and BA doesn’t get the fare data for many partner flights.

      • Jonathan says:

It wouldn’t be at all difficult for them to identify the difference between someone who’s bought a fully flex premium seat, versus someone who’s snapped the cheapest ticket they can possibly find, and someone who’s booked a non-flex ticket, but isn’t the cheapest of the cheap tickets

You yourself Rob got caught out on an Aer Lingus booking…

        • Rob says:

Aer Lingus is part of the transatlantic JV so BA sees the fare data. It wouldn’t see it on a Cathay flight.

However, ironically – in the 5 years its taken BA to get around to this – the US airlines are now getting rid of it and moving to a combination of cash spent on flights and cash spent with partners, with the latter being most important.

  • Gordon says:

Thanks for the time and input on this Rob, it’s not a bad thing to refresh these kinds of articles, I see the usual tier point runners CE destinations have not been reduced yet!
