It’s April – you’re now in your British Airways tier point transitional year

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

As we have covered extensively on Head for Points, British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years from 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

The period from yesterday (1st April 2024) to a variable date depending on your year end is a transitional period. Any tier points you earn from yesterday will count twice – once in your current membership year and once in a (theoretical) membership year which runs from 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.

you're now in your BA tier point transitional year

Importantly, you can earn or renew your British Airways status by collecting the required number of tier points in EITHER your actual current membership year or the new (theoretical) 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025 year.

We have updated our month by month guide to show you how the new transitional period impacts you based on your British Airways Executive Club month end. This is as clear as we can make it! For more information, go back to our original article on the changes.

The first ‘Tier Point Adjustment’ is due to be made soon after 9th April 2024, to those with an 8th April year end. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to post and whether it is accurate.

Ending in April 2024

For obvious reasons, given that everyone is being aligned on 31st March going forward, these people see the least impact from the changes.

  • NigelthePensioner says:

One aspect of this that I dont believe has been mentioned is tier point bonus’s. Will double tier points earned on BA holidays during the “transition period” be counted as double or just as single aliquots of tier points. Similarly the tiny tier point bonuses on the AmEx BA PP card earned in this period……will they also count again??

    • Eoc says:

No mention that I could find on the BA site of any difference of treatment

    • Mikel says:

I don’t see any reason why they won’t count.

    • Tony says:

BA website confirms they will be:

Are the British Airways Holidays bonus Tier Point awards included in the Tier Point Adjustment credit?

Yes, any British Airways Holidays bonus Tier Points awarded between 1 April 2024 and the end of your Tier Point collection period that started on or before March 2024 will be included.

Are the Tier Points earned from the American Express Premium Plus campaign eligible in the Tier Point Adjustment credit?

Yes, Tier Points awarded as part of the American Express Premium Plus campaign (ending 20 May 2024) between 1 April 2024 and the end of your Tier Point collection period that started on or before March 2024 will be included.

    • NigelthePensioner says:

Thank you – all above- for your clarification(s).

  • TomB says:

Been putting off spending for the last 2 months and ££ yesterday to get the first 100 and 50 TP of the BA PP tier point offer credited. Great timing on that offer!!

  • @mkcol says:

What a lot of work has been done to create this.
    Thank you.

    • Andrew J says:

It’s a copy and paste from the BA website.
      https://www.headforpoints.com/hfp/ba-tier-point-collection-changes/

      • executiveclubber says:

Agree – it’s a bit disingenuous to call it “our guide” when it’s just a rehashed BA page?

        • Rob says:

BA copied our article. I can’t believe you think BA could write something like this.

      • Stu_N says:

Eh. No. It’s a copy and paste from an article HfP did to cut through the chaos when changes first announced. BA made such a mess of it that Rob and Rhys compiled this clear month-by-month guide from their own work plus input from comments and validated it with BA.

A lot of work did go into it and the fact BA now have something similar should have a hat-tip to HfP.

        • Andrew J says:

I stand corrected and apologise then. As it’s word-for-word the same on the BA website, I had assumed the official source was the original – I should have know better to make such an assumption about BA.

          • Rob says:

            BA copied our article.

          • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

BA did a version that was released with the initial announcement that had the month by month details of the transition periods.

Rob and Rhys then refined it with BAEC so a shared effort.

I recall Rob writing at the time that he had no advanced notice of the announcement otherwise he’d have told them it needed to be clearer before BA released it and that’s why there wasn’t an article ready to go when the announcement was made,

  • DaveP says:

Very useful thanks. Clarifies my current year end position from 8 Oct 24 where I’ve got flights booked to gain 1500 TPs within my ‘grace period’.

  • AJA says:

“The first ‘Tier Point Adjustment’ is due to be made soon after 9th April 2024, to those with an 8th April year end.”

I think you are a year too soon. I think the TP points adjustment (double counting if you like) only gets posted in early April 2025.

In my case as a 8 Feb year end I think i will have from yesterday 1 April 2024 to 8 Feb 2025 to collect TP that will count again on 9 Apr 2025.

    • Liam Gladdy says:

In the email they sent those of us with an 8th April existing calendar end date, they said the tier point adjustment would be within 14 days of 8th April 2024.

      > This Tier Point Adjustment will be added within 14 days of 8 April 2024

    • Richie says:

There are no membership years ending 8th April 2025, they all end 31st March 2025.

      • AJA says:

Oops I understand now and in my own case I meant 9 Feb and not 9 Apr. It seems if I get enough Tier points to either maintain Bronze or upgrade to Silver between 1 April 2024 and 8 February 2025 these points will be reposted again on 9 Feb 2025 for my shortened year 9Feb2025 to 31Mar2025 giving me status until 31 Mar 2026.

Even if I fail to maintain Bronze I will just fall back to Blue on 9 Feb2025 at which point it makes no sense to try get 300TP in the short window of 9Feb to 31Mar2025 as that will only give me max 14 months of Bronze to 31Mar2026. I’d do better to get Bronze after 1 Apr 2025 as that would give me status until 31 Mar 2027 ( assuming they haven’t changed the goalposts by then.

  • Stu_N says:

570TPs booked in April and early May with a May year end. More luck that judgement there.

  • Matthias says:

Bit of a nightmare this for those of us who renew Silver cards via Tier Point runs every 2 years in the 2-month “grace window”.

The grace window shrinks to the month of April only – wonder whether BA will see a big surge in TP runs that month now?

And with my January end date I either need to go for ~6 weeks without Silver (March + some of April) or TP run in Jan but only get 15 months out of it.

To be fair, people like me shouldn’t have a Silver card in the first place, but it’s still a pain.

Rob, did BA ever explain why they are doing this? I would have thought a rolling set of renewals makes life easier from a capacity planning perspective eg in lounges, rather than a big jump / drop in numbers once a year. Although a yearly date would make it easier to hike the Tier Points thresholds.

    • Richie says:

April has Easter school holidays where demand increases flight prices, not a good month for TP running.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

As does March some years (like this year)

With a modicum of pre planning the vast majority of people won’t need to do last minute TP runs.

    • Amy C says:

This ‘grace window,’ I’ve not really looked into it. My year end is June 8th currently. Are you saying I could earn TP to end of July and they’d apply to current year?
I’m due to get 160 from IST trip weekend of June 22nd so this is interesting to me.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

No. To have them apply to your current 2023/24 year ending on 8th June under the old system count you’d need to complete the flights by 22nd of June and then call and ask BA to include them in that years count and not your new one.

Some people are confusing that grace period with the 6-7 weeks between collection year end and status year end which is totally different,

        • Matthias says:

The grace period I was referring to is the 2-month period (in future: 1 month) where you still have your status from the previous year but you can already earn status for the next year – so ‘grace period’ isn’t the right word.

          Example:

          – I currently have Silver with my Year End on 8/1/25
          – But my status lasts until 28/2/25 so 2 months longer
          – So if I can earn 600 TP between 9/1 and 28/2 I have no interruption in status but my new status is valid until 28/2/27 (2 extra years) rather than 28/2/26 if I earn the 600 TP before 8/1

What this means is that by using this 2 month window I need to do 1 TP run every 2 years to have Silver forever – as opposed to 1 per year. With the cost of a Silver TP run around £1500 depending on how you arrange it, that’s worth it for me. (Would be less with BA hols deal).

In future this approach will still work but I will only have the month of April to do the TP run – pretty tight and more expensive than Jan/Feb (although admittedly I was lucky, someone with a June end date might prefer April.)

    • Rob says:

IAG alignment before the move to a Miles & More style system.

    • Charlie says:

In yours and other cases it is the soft landing element that will likely be hit, which is reduced from around 10 months (if you front load your tier points) to as little as 1 month. You’ll soft land to bronze for only a couple of months instead of 12 (probably) but presuming you front load with biz class flights, on balance, you’re not really losing much over those couple of months, versus, for example a gold who front loads and will see a soft landing of possibly only 1 to 12 months instead of 12 months. As soft landing is not published, BA could comp status in some cases (e.g. 13 months instead if 1). It has and does happen. But as said, in your case, there’s no real hardship in my view, unless you front load/loaded your silver entirely on economy flights in 2 months. Which would be pretty painful!

      • Matthias says:

Actually there is ‘hardship’ (if you can call it that – well you can’t really can you) in that my normal strategy would have been to earn 600 TP in Jan/Feb which would have carried my Silver on until end of Feb 27.

If I did that now, I would only keep Silver until Apr 26, a loss of 10 months.

So I have the choice between delaying the TP run until April (and not being Silver in March), or going ahead but having to do the next TP run 10 months sooner than planned.

        • Charlie says:

Sure, I appreciate that during the month of March 2025, when you are bronze, unless you fly biz you won’t have the perks of silver. However, on the upside, by delaying until after 1st April 2025 you will have silver from the time you hit the 600 until April 2027 (presuming all else remains constant). Of course, it could be all revenue based by then, which would be the argument for yielding the 600 whilst known factors are still in play.
