It’s April – you’re now in your British Airways tier point transitional year

As we have covered extensively on Head for Points, British Airways will be moving everyone onto aligned tier point collection years from 1st April 2025.

The official British Airways page announcing the changes is here.

The period from yesterday (1st April 2024) to a variable date depending on your year end is a transitional period. Any tier points you earn from yesterday will count twice – once in your current membership year and once in a (theoretical) membership year which runs from 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025.

you're now in your BA tier point transitional year

Importantly, you can earn or renew your British Airways status by collecting the required number of tier points in EITHER your actual current membership year or the new (theoretical) 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025 year.

We have updated our month by month guide to show you how the new transitional period impacts you based on your British Airways Executive Club month end. This is as clear as we can make it! For more information, go back to our original article on the changes.

The first ‘Tier Point Adjustment’ is due to be made soon after 9th April 2024, to those with an 8th April year end. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to post and whether it is accurate.

Ending in April 2024

For obvious reasons, given that everyone is being aligned on 31st March going forward, these people see the least impact from the changes.

  • NFH says:

Couldn’t this be simplified to say that the current tier points earning year overlaps with the new tier points earning year from 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025, and that any tier points earnt during the overlapping period count towards both years?

    • Rob says:

If you seriously think people could interpret that then you should go and work for BAEC 🙂

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

IIRC all the original info from BA basically said that but apparently it’s too complex an issue for many people to understand even when BA and then HfP provided a month by month breakdown based on collection year month ends..

    • riku says:

I find the concept of overlapping collection periods easier to understand. My next collection period will not be SHORTENED (currently ends in Sept). The next period started yesterday and last until 31 March, it just overlaps with the current Sep 23 – Aug 24 collection period.
      >>Your next collection period will be shortened to 9th September 2024 – 31st March 2025

      • Rob says:

It is shortened for presentational purposes – look at what the app shows in terms of your year end date.

  • Colin says:

I currently enjoying GOLD elite status, which is due to soft land to SILVER on 8th August 2024.
For medical reasons I will not be able to fly for the next 12 months.
Will I only be SILVER from 8th Aug through to 31st March 2025?

    • Lou says:

Yup, everybody is going to be shafted on soft landings unless they were e.y. March anyway

    • Richie says:

Please re-read the ‘August’ section in the article above.

      • DZOO says:

It’s still not clear to me either…

        • Rob says:

It literally could not be explained in a clearer way. That’s not to say its clear, but there is no better way of explaining it (which is why BA copied it).

          • DZOO says:

The part that wasn’t 100% clear was whether a soft landing is deemed “earned” in your summary (sounds like it’s not…)

  • Thomas Atkins says:

Thx to Rob and the HfP for putting the month-by-month guide together. Hope BA do some sort of hat-tip/bonus offer to HfP’ers to help soften the blow…

  • Jill Kinkell says:

I thought I had grasped this!
I’m an 8March year end so now in my new collection year 9 March 24-8 March 25. I’ve already had a trip in late March 2024 and others booked for rest of the year ultimately getting gold . From 9 March-31 March 2025 my reallocated TPs likely to be 1100 = Silver. Going forwards from April 2025 am I Gold or Silver until April 2026?

    Earlier article on HfP:
“Your next collection year will start on 9th March 2024 and continue as normal until 8th March 2025
Any status earned or renewed during this period will be valid until 30th April 2026
Your next collection period will be shortened to 9th March 2025 – 31st March 2025
A Tier Point Adjustment will be made at the start of your shortened collection period (on 9th March 2025), re-crediting any tier points and qualifying flights you earned from 1st April 2024 – 8th March 2025
Any status earned or renewed during this period will be valid until 30th April 2026”

    So , Gold or silver?

    • AJA says:

I’m not sure but if you don’t earn 1500TP by 8Mar2025 I do think you will drop to Silver on 9 Mar 2025 even if you are currently Gold.

      • Jill Kinkell says:

I will be gold by 8 March 2025. According to Robs article in February my gold is valid until April 2026. However, my transition year is very short 8-31 March 2025. and the tps added during that time will be 1100 from trips after 1 April 2024. That = Silver . So my question was am I gold until April 2026 or silver until 2026 ?

        • AJA says:

Assuming you are gold by 8 Mar 2025 I think that your card expiry date will show as valid until 30 April 2026.

It is a bit weird with the short transition year but I can’t see BA issuing a card for a mere 2 months as status earned or retained in the current year is usually valid for 12 months of the next year.

          • Jill Kinkell says:

One would hope so! Thanks for your input. I am banking on still having gold through to April 26 as have plans next year

  • SN says:

SOFT LANDING? I don’t see this anywhere mentioned on BA website. I have Gold until Oct 2025. Then under old system I would have had soft land to silver until Oct 2026. Does the new system mean I will only have silver until April 2026?

    • Rob says:

      Yes.

Soft landings are NOT contractual (even though BA has done them for ever) so you have to lump it. I am in the same boat – if I don’t renew Gold I’d have Silver to Sep 2026 but now only April 2026.

(Even if they were contractual, BA can still vary the T&C with enough notice anyway.)

  • Daniel says:

In his article on double tier points with BA holidays Rob recommends NOT booking a holiday around the end of your tier point year as the tier points could end up split between years.

My tier point year ends in October and I’ve booked a holiday late September! I am assuming that due to these new transitional arrangements, I will be fine as whenever the points post they will go into both years?

    • Jill Kinkell says:

My recent March trip was booked ages ago before we knew about the aligning of membership years and the transitional period. So that 480 tps that won’t count

    • Richie says:

I’d take a screenshot of my account and recent transactions on 8th October if the TPs have not been credited

  • Tracey says:

Flying home from a BA holiday today, so outward travel was before 1 April, return is after. Double tier points should hopefully post in a couple of weeks time. I know the outward points are lost in the “tier point year” from 1 April, but what happens to the double tier points? Will they all count? Only double the return, as that was after 1 April, or something else?

  • Gordon says:

Only just had a chance to at least, cast a lazy eye over the article, Thanks for this Rob.
