Where can I fly from UK regional airports with Avios?

In this article I want to look at where you can fly from UK regional airports (so excluding Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and London City) with Avios.

When British Airways sold its regional operations to Flybe many years ago, it became an airline with NO flights which do not begin or end in London.  This situation has been reversed slightly in recent years as a few weekend routes were added from Southampton and Edinburgh, but to all intents and purposes there is no substantive route network outside London.

Luckily, there are still some Avios options available.  Let’s take a look.

Where can you fly from UK regional airports with Avios?

How can I redeem these flights?

Unfortunately it’s not hugely straightforward:

  • all of the flights below, except for Vueling, can be booked on ba.com via the standard Avios booking portal
  • for Aer Lingus short haul flights (not the Manchester long haul services) you will find that the taxes and charges are lower if you open an Aer Lingus AerClub account, move your Avios across via ‘Combine My Avios’ and book via aerlingus.com
  • for Vueling flights, you need to open an Aer Lingus AerClub or Vueling Club account, move your Avios across via ‘Combine My Avios’ and book via vueling.com – but this is rarely worthwhile, as it is a straight ‘get money off a cash ticket by using Avios’ deal at a poor rate

Which regional flights can be booked using Avios?

  • TimM says:

A very useful post, thank you.

I do find the use of the word “regional” somewhat patronising. London and the South East is a region too. From the Cambridge English Dictionary, “Region: a particular area or part of the world, or any of the large official areas into which a country is divided:”

It would be great to have a similar article about Virgin Points.

You have to work for our foot fall to HfP 🙂

    • tony says:

Technically I believe “provincial” is more appropriate – but the definition is even more patronising.

adjective/of or concerning the regions outside the capital city of a country, (especially when regarded as unsophisticated or narrow-minded.
“the whole exhibition struck me as being very provincial”)

      Ouch…

    • anna says:

I personally work on the basis that BA is London Airways in all but name.

People from the London area also seem to be very averse to using England. They often use UK/GB/Britain as an inaccurate synonym of England in instances when people from elsewhere in the UK would (correctly) use England.

  • Graham Crabb says:

Can you use companion vouchers with these other airlines?

  • Bob says:

A very helpful guide; thank you.
We mostly use the rapidly expanding Jet2 because of their footprint in Bristol; it would be helpful if BA could see that there is untapped need beyond the major hubs. Using Avios could be much more straightforward if we didn’t automatically need overnight accommodation before many flights.
PS out in the sticks rather than in the smoke is the way to go

    • PeteM says:

I suspect BA have very carefully looked at what the market can support in, say, Bristol, and concluded it’s not worth their while…?

      • Rob says:

Here’s the thing. Look at what Jet2 is doing at Bournemouth from next year. 16 short haul routes served by TWO aircraft, because mainly it’s just 1-2 rotations per week per route. BA could easily do the same if it wanted.

        • PeteM says:

But those two aircraft can presumably be used to make more money at LHR/LGW/LCY?

    • Richie says:

BACF did try some summer weekend flying to Malaga, Ibiza, Palma from BRS a few years ago, my guess is loads weren’t good enough.

      • Rob says:

One flight per week, and presumably badly advertised, isn’t ideal when you have competitors flying daily.

      • NorthernLass says:

And MAN, lasted all of 2 summers!

    • TimM says:

Jet2 is my least favourite airline for dozens of reasons.

The current issue about using BA from London is the poor timetabled train service to get there and the fact that half of the trains are cancelled at short notice and half of the ones that run are late. Even with good insurance, how can you book a flight to Brazil to join a one-way cruise to Europe knowing there is little chance of getting there in time?

BA is missing out on the train catastrophe affecting most of the UK’s train services by not providing sufficient connecting, or even direct, services.

      • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

        Travel to LHR day before.

BTW I don’t agree with your doom and gloom re the railways. Yes there are issues but it is not as bad as parts of the media make it out to be.

  • planeconcorde says:

Aer Lingus Jersey to Dublin, Wednesday and Saturday (summer only)

While Jersey isn’t part of the UK, Isle Of Man is another crown dependency which has been included.

  • Rob says:

    Hi,

Where can you fly from stansted using avios?

    • Rob says:

Off the top of my head I would say RJ to Amman may be it, apart from the BA Cityflyer weekend routes this summer.

  • S says:

Can you elaborate on how I can use Companion Vouchers on Aer Lingus. Where do I check the availability to Barbados for example? Is this on the Avios app or through AL?

    • Rob says:

Exact same process via ba.com as booking a BA redemption.

You can also book the same flights at same cost via the Lingus site but you can’t use a voucher.

  • Bertster says:

This is really helpful, although it’s sad to see confirmation of how poor the options are from East Midlands these days. Would it be possible to do the same thing for Avios/TP earning? That would bring in Loganair, for a start.

  • Vit says:

Thanks Rob. Very useful. I did not know that IB express flies EDI-MAD. Is it possible to tag this leg to the long-haul one utilising both companion voucher and low surcharge? or impossible as it is departing from the UK and higher surcharge applies?

    • Rob says:

Triggers £200 business class APD if you do.

    • Fiona says:

I didnt know this either but having looked into it (for a redemption flight out of MAD in Jan next year) and it looks like they dont fly daily and also have not released the flights after the summer as when I search past then I only get BA via LHR.
