Which Finnair long-haul routes have ultra-low taxes when using Avios?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Early last month, Finnair adopted Avios as its loyalty currency. We covered the story here.

You CANNOT yet move Avios back and forth between Finnair Plus and British Airways Executive Club, but this should be possible from late May / June.

This doesn’t stop you redeeming Avios for Finnair flights, of course.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

You have ALWAYS been able to redeem Avios for Finnair flights on ba.com because both airlines are members of the oneworld airline alliance.

What has changed is that BA and Finnair have agreed to charge exactly the same for Avios flights on Finnair. In many cases this has led to a decent reduction in the cost of flights.

Finnair is more useful than you might think. Helsinki is ‘on the way’ to Asia from much of Europe, meaning that a connection there is not a lot slower than flying direct. (It is slower than it was, however, due to the ban on using Russian airspace.)

Finnair has NO ‘carrier surcharges’ on many of its long haul flights. This makes them exceptionally good value if you want to avoid taxes and charges.

There are some exceptions. To North America, Finnair is part of the BA / AA / Iberia / Aer Lingus joint venture. To Japan, Finnair is part of the BA / Japan Airlines joint venture. Finnair is obliged to charge higher surcharges on these routes under the terms of the joint venture agreement. Surcharges are also higher to Shanghai, possibly due to the China Southern codeshare deal.

For other long haul routes, you’re laughing.

Finnair now has guaranteed award availability

Finnair now guarantees a minimum number of award seats for Avios redemption on each flight. This should make it significantly easier to redeem Avios on Finnair.

Finnair is offering:

  • 4-6 award seats on shorthaul European flights (two in Business where it exists, four in Economy)
  • 8 award seats on long haul flights (two in Business, two in Premium Economy and four in Economy)

These should be bookable via ba.com so there is no need to wait until you are able to transfer Avios into Finnair Plus.

What do Avios redemptions cost on Finnair?

Here is the new reward chart. Remember that the same chart applies whether you book on finnair.com or ba.com.

Note that there are no peak / off-peak prices.

These are one way prices from Helsinki. Connections are charged separately except for ‘Northern Europe’ – I discuss this below.

Where are the best redemption routes for low taxes?

Here is a list of Finnair long haul routes from Helsinki. Pricing is for Business Class, return, flights.

Finnair also flies to Doha from Stockholm and Copenhagen. Taxes are even lower than the number shown below, and getting to those cities should be cheaper than getting to Helsinki.

I have highlighted those where the taxes and charges are under £100 return.

Where are the biggest savings over direct British Airways flights?

Our list of Avios pricing by route when flying on British Airways from London is here.

Finnair business class seat

Here are the routes with the biggest overall Avios and cash savings compared with a PEAK British Airways Club World return flight from London:

Bangkok

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £59

Delhi

  • BA – 200,000 Avios + £450
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £55

Doha

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £72

Dubai

  • BA – 180,000 Avios + £350
  • Finnair – 110,000 Avios + £69

Hong Kong

  • BA – 220,000 Avios + £550
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £77

Singapore

  • BA – 240,000 Avios + £600
  • Finnair – 125,000 Avios + £79

British Airways does not fly to Nagoya, Osaka, Phuket or Seoul.

I cannot stress enough how good value Singapore is. Even if you have a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher, you should save it for another trip and pay full Avios to go with Finnair.

Which Finnair routes have ultra-low taxes for long haul Avios redemptions?

Of course, don’t forget ….

There are snags, of course:

  • you need to get to Helsinki, which will cost you in cash or Avios (BA has dropped it but Finnair flies from Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin, various low cost carriers also fly it)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on a separate ticket, you will need to build in a big gap to ensure you don’t miss your connection – but Finnair will through-check your luggage if both flights are with them (according to the comments below)
  • if your flight to Helsinki is on the same ticket, you get protection from a missed connection but will also have to pay long-haul UK Air Passenger Duty
  • you can’t use a British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher or Barclays upgrade voucher on Finnair

Avios bookings made on the Finnair Plus website allow a free connection in ‘Northern Europe’. This is defined as Bodø, Copenhagen, Gdansk, Gothenburg, Oslo, Riga, Stockholm, Tallinn, Trondheim, Vilnius, Visby, Warsaw and all flights within Finland.

This would allow you to book, say, Copenhagen to Helsinki to Singapore for the same cost as Helsinki to Singapore. This will benefit some people as Helsinki is a longer and pricier flight from the UK than many cities on the list above. You can’t book this until transfers into Finnair Plus are allowed – you won’t get a free connection if you book at ba.com.

What’s the new Finnair Business Class seat like?

The new Finnair ‘no recline’ seat is now on virtually all routes. I won’t go into it again but you can read my review here. Rhys is off to Nagoya soon to test it on a long haul route. Image above.

Conclusion

Finnair offers exceptional value for a solo traveller or a couple without a BA Amex voucher on long haul business class flights to much of Asia, the Middle East and Delhi.

You have to factor in a transfer in Helsinki, but it’s a great city for a 24 hour stopover (if you want one, image above), the redeveloped airport is lovely and the lounges in the non-Schengen area are excellent – if you are British Airways Gold you can visit the Platinum Wing which we reviewed here, and have a sauna whilst you wait.

  • Aston100 says:

So, as say I (accidentally) booked HEL to KIX.
    2 people.
    Over the phone with BA.
Cost 125k Avios + £235.60 taxes & charges + £30 service fees for not bothering to do it myself online. Total for 2 persons.
Those taxes & charges don’t seem to make sense. When I was looking online it was £375.80 for 2 persons, one way.

    What’s with that?

  • Aston100 says:

So the comments suggest that I can get my bags checked from London through to Japan on separate Finn Air tickets. That’s great.

So if I’ve got a 17:45 departure from HEL, would a 15:15 arrival from London (on a separately ticketed Finn Air flight) be good enough to get a good 45 minutes or so in the lounge?

    • BJ says:

As much as double that with on-time arrival and departure.

      • meta says:

Lounge is nothing special and I wouldn’t plan to spend much time in there unless you also want to shower. On my last visit, I went for about half an hour. Food options are also limited and not that great. I would have lohikeito (salmon soup) in one of the restaurants in the terminal followed by a few drinks in the lounge. Beware also that soft drinks are on tap as are the juices. Blueberry juice is not replenished after 4pm, a cost-cutting measure according to staff. They are also seriously understaffed. A few weeks ago, there was a 15-min queue to get drinks from the bar.

        • Aston100 says:

Oh no, what have I let myself in for.
BJ – this is all your fault.

          • Gordon says:

Don’t shoot the messenger! Who accidentally books a flight to JAPAN 😆 That’s a new one on me!

          • BJ says:

Personally I’d prefer a smooth 45 minute connection walkibg of one plane onto the other but as I posted early this morning it causes me too much anxiety so I changed to Qatar with a 110 minute connection. 45 minute connections in HEL are doable but only if no later than 20 minute delay on departing EDI. It’s many years since I was in Helsinki lounge, my connections have all been door to door.

          • meta says:

It’s still superior to the BA lounge zoo! I’d do anything to avoid flying BA.

          • meta says:

@Aston100 You can have a lot of blueberry juice on the flight itself. It’s a long flight to Japan. I drank two cartons on my last flight in addition to very good Finnish G&T.

  • Dave hughes says:

So if they (AY) check bags on separate ticketed flights right through to destination surely they’d have a nightmare on tight connections as they’d have to find and off load it? What’s the score with that it’s almost easier to wait for you ?

  • Harry T says:

How long do people think it will be before BA drag AY down to their level on taxes and charges though?

    • BJ says:

That’s the million avios question. On the plus side Qatars own award ‘chart’ and pricing has proved sustainable so far. The situation with Russia/Ukraine ( not a plus at all) will continue to make things difficult for Finnair so they will not want to undermine anything that gets people on seats. Then there is the question of whether potential pax living around major hubs in Europe (LHR and MAD in particular) will consider the saving worthwhile of the inconvenience of routing via HEL. The major fownside is that Finnair themselves just get ‘greedy’ and want the cash.

      • CJD says:

If people who live around London don’t consider the savings worth it then it leaves extra seats for those of us who don’t live around London.

  • BajanNation says:

Any tips on best way to search for availability, not for specific dates but over longer periods?

    • Rob says:

Finnair website shows you one week at a time and brings up results in about 1 second vs BA’s 20-30 seconds.

  • Bob says:

I see the following redemption with Finnair –

Sat 12-April Finnair Oslo to Singapore 62,500 + £141 (One way)

But, the table above, shows HEL-SIN taxes as £79.

    When I tried it for HEL-SIN, I got: 62,500 Avios + £117.70 (One way).

Am I not doing it right?

    • Tony says:

Also seeing much higher taxes than listed in the article. HEL-BKK 125,000 avios plus £203.80 return. Still a good deal, but maybe things have changed since you wrote the article?

      • Rob says:

        What are you doing wrong?

Just redid the exact same booking (14/3 out, 20/3 in):

        125000 Avios + £ 58.90
        112500 Avios + £ 348.90
        93800 Avios + £ 658.90
        75000 Avios + £ 1,008.90
        70000 Avios + £ 1,108.90
        62500 Avios + £ 1,188.90

I doubt BA is giving me a special exclusive discount ….

  • John says:

Trying to book this via Finnair I get taxes of £205.60 return. But via BA, taxes are £59.20. So it does seem that there is a discount for booking via BA. A bit annoying because I current have a load of Avios in Finnair and can’t yet move them out!

    • John says:

This refers to HEL-BKK return in business.

    • Rob says:

Weird. The deal is that taxes must be equalised. Perhaps it will happen when Avios transfers are possible – although that probably means equalised upwards.
