Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

What did you tell us in the Head for Points 2024 reader survey?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Thank you to the 13,000 people who completed the reader survey we ran on the site over Easter.

When we did the same exercise in 2022 we only shared the results with the people who voted. This time we thought it would be interesting to publish some of the findings about our typical reader.

We’ve not published your answers to those questions which were more ‘internal’, eg what method you use to read us.

Head for Points 2024 reader survey

Where do you live?

Unsurprisingly, the majority of readers live in London and the South East.

The UK region with the fewest HfP readers is Northern Ireland (1.9% of you) followed by Wales (2.1%).

We used broader regional definitions in 2024 than in 2022, so we can’t confirm if we now have more than 10 readers in Norfolk or not!

How old are you?

If you come to a HfP party you get a false impression of how young our readers are – mainly because only a certain demographic want to come out drinking in Central London midweek!

’35-44′ was the biggest group, followed by ’45-54′. We have virtually the same number of readers aged 65+ as we have readers under 35.

In terms of gender, 73% of you are male.

How much premium cabin travel do you do?

Of those who fly long haul for work, the majority of you are flying in Business Class. In fact, more of you fly Premium Economy than Economy.

Only 20% of you who fly short haul for work get to fly Business Class however. The days of ‘always Business Class’ travel policies seem long gone for most people.

Switch to leisure travel and it’s a big change. 42% of you fly Business Class when you travel short haul for leisure.

Over half of you fly Business Class on long haul leisure trips. Add in Premium Economy and First Class and over 70% of our readers are not flying Economy.

Who are your favourite hotel chains?

Over 60% of readers said that they have elite status with a hotel group. The most popular was Hilton Honors – 2/3rd of HfP readers who have hotel status have Hilton status.

In order, you then have Marriott, IHG, Radisson, Melia, Accor and Hyatt.

I accept that this question is a little skewed because Amex Platinum cardholders get status with Hilton, Marriott, Radisson and Melia as part of the benefits package. Whilst Hyatt was bottom of the list, I was surprised by how many readers have status with it given that you need to do ‘heads in [their few European] beds’ to earn it.

75% of you do 11+ nights in hotels per year. 8% do 50+ nights.

Do you have British Airways status?

I was intrigued by this one, because it gives a feeling for how many readers are heavy business or cash-paying leisure travellers compared to those who collect Avios but do not take premium cabin cash flights.

It was virtually a 50/50 split between ‘status’ and ‘no status’.

Of whose who have BA status, 24% are Gold or GGL, 39% are Silver and 37% are Bronze.

What non-BA airine status do you hold?

Unsurprisingly, the most common ‘other’ status to hold was in Virgin Flying Club.

I was surprised by the 2nd answer though – Qatar Airways Privilege Club – followed by Flying Blue, Emirates Skywards and Miles & More.

I suspect that a lot of Qatar Airways members have started reading us since it adopted Avios. Perhaps we’ll see a big spike in Finnair Plus elite members next year!

Head for Points 2024 reader survey

Which travel credit cards do you hold?

Unsurprisingly the two British Airways American Express cards dominate here with almost half of you holding the Premium Plus version.

Holders of the paid card outnumbered the free card by 2:1.

Behind the two BA cards, the third most popular card was the free Barclaycard Avios Mastercard. This shows that many BA Amex cardholders have added this as their ‘non Amex’ card.

That said, around 50% of our BA Amex-holding readers do not hold either of the Barclaycard Avios cards. Some will have a Virgin Atlantic card but a lot of you seem to be using a non-travel rewards card for your Visa / Mastercard spend.

(Barclaycard and HSBC are the only card ‘families’ where more of you have the free version than the paid version. Substantially more of you have the paid Virgin Atlantic card vs the free card or have Amex Platinum vs Amex Gold.)

Who won 20,000 Avios?

We promised to give 20,000 Avios to one lucky voter. The winner was Stuart who is one of the 8.5% of you who live in Scotland.

After we told him he’d won, Stuart generously wrote:

“Thank you so much!! I have been a follower of your site for many years and because of your tips and alerts I have managed to pull off some fantastic first class flights over the years to New York, Tokyo and Mexico City. This years big trip is Los Angeles – we actually fly tomorrow afternoon from Glasgow via Heathrow and once again have managed to bag first class return flights with British Airways. Quite excited. So thanks again for all your help and I can’t wait to make some more fantastic memories while travelling in style with my extra Avios points.”

Thanks again to everyone who voted – we appreciate it.

Just picking up on one of your comments in particular Rob ref Hyatt status.

During Covid Hyatt/Amex ran a number of compelling offers which coupled with their taking over the 2 blocks in Stratford (along with the Lizzie line) meant it became more attractive than a few of the more established operators.

I’ve also purposely sought out Hyatt options in cities that I know I’m travelling too, hence the Regency in Malta last year and FirstName this weekend in Bordeaux.

Obtaining Globalist has obviously helped even more, albeit that’s off the back of some long stays in Dubai and LA last year, I’m going to struggle to retain it!

    • Reney says:

Adding to this, if you have US readers or people who manage to get the Chase Hyatt card it comes with the lowest tier of status.

  • Liz says:

Up early to check in for our flight tomorrow to Austin for another USA road trip. Wouldn’t let me check in for the long haul part which is a bummer. Hope they have allocated our seats together in CW.
Survey info is great and I am one of the 8.5% Scottish readers! Been following since late 2014!

    • Reney says:

Have you tried calling to check everything is ok? Last time that happened to me was because it was not ticketed property and far easier to fix sitting at home/at a hotel room then at the airport.

      • Liz says:

It just says they want to see our passports at check in for the USA leg. Got checked in ok for the domestic bit.

        • Gordon says:

Probably to do with ESTA, as it is linked to your passport!

        • jjoohhnn says:

Have you flown on this ESTA yet?

        • CC says:

I had this when going to Austin couple of months ago, and coming back from Nashville even though checked in all fine, mine was direct from LHR.

        • Gordon says:

I will say that this happened to my wife on a trip, I was able to check in and my wife was not, and when we arrived at the airport, my wife was selected for a random drug test! I am not saying that this is the case here.

          • Liz says:

Managed to check in when the long haul flight came up so we have secured our seats and boarding passes. Says in red we have to present our passport at the desk. We’ll be handing in our cases anyway so looks like we are all good. I’ve been selected for an explosives search before!

      • Alan says:

Yes a friend recently had that on the return leg of a trip to the States. BA had forgotten to reticket the return leg after a schedule change. BA staff at Seattle couldn’t have been more unhelpful! Really poor CS. Eventually sorted after 1h+ on the phone to BA CS in London.

    • Alan says:

Have a great road trip, Liz! 🚗😎

      • Liz says:

All ok today and now in the Cathay Pacific lounge. From getting off the domestic plane at T5 to getting to T3 it took 30 mins. Walked straight on the transfer bus and they opened a new security line! Never works like that when you are in a hurry!

  • DaveP says:

It will be interesting in the next survey to see if there has been a drop in numbers/percentage holding the BAPP card following the recently announced card fee and annual spend requirement. I, for one, am seriously considering not renewing next January.

    • memesweeper says:

Given the ebb and flow of readership that might not tell you what you’re looking for.

Asking which credit (and non-credit) cards people took up, and ditched, over the last 12 months might be an interesting question. In my case Curve, Amex Plat and Barclays Hilton are all very much at risk. Some of the advertisers on this site might prefer that information not to be published, of course 🙂

  • Xmenlongshot says:

What surprises me in these stats? A higher European business class % than I might have expected given a lot of people with status profess to prefer the exit row

    • Throwawayname says:

If you need/want to take luggage with you, the business class premium on some airlines can be pretty negligible. In fact, when flying from the regions, it’s not unusual for LH C to be cheaper than a Jet2 ticket with the luggage add-on.

  • jj says:

With most leisure flights being in business (and I’m in that camp), BA’s status scheme seems to miss the mark. Almost all the benefits offered are already included in the ticket price for business travellers.

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

      Yes and no.

Without status If I buy a club ticket then that only allows access for me. With gold/silver I can take a guest in.

Unless you’re flying F without Gold you can’t use the F wing,

Extra baggage allowance comes with status.

      As do extra avios.

Unless you’re ticket is a full J fare bucket then without status your seat choices are limited.

      • Gordon says:

“Unless your ticket is a full J fare bucket then without status your seat choices are limited”.

There is a benefit with BA, that allows you to choose your seat at no cost, in any class! With no status!

I will not comment further on this as it could be abused.
I have dropped to bronze and I do not pay for seat selection at the time of booking.

        • Mark says:

Now that’s a hack I’d like to know.

          • Gordon says:

I’ve spoke to @ Rob burgess about this before! I’m sure he can confirm that this is indeed genuine. Without giving too much away. Sorry.

    • zapato1060 says:

“my love you have to pay with BAPP, we’re paying £250 a year for it!”

She has changed a lot mind you. My son thinks I’m a hacker. All fun and games. Enjoying the journey.

  • Can2 says:

    73% male.
I wonder if there are “couple” HfPers.
It seems that there is often one per household who is into this game.

Are there couples who discuss the game over family dinners, make joint plans, learn from each other?

    Just wondering..

    • Ali M says:

      Hi
      You maybe right.
At least for our family its just me and even I am not as astute as a lot of folk on here. I would be the one nagging to go through BA shopping portal while ordering dominos *facepalm*
She doesn’t like my nagging but she likes when once in 4 years we can have an award flight using a voucher and avios haha

      • Lloyd says:

Yes, it’s just me in our household. Wife says she’s fed up of my nagging and just wanted to buy a hairdryer with her miles! Didn’t mind when we got 2 award tickets in Singapore Airlines Suites from Singapore to London though!

    • M says:

I think my wife hates me trying to arrange our hols as I talk about reward seats etc! Not sure she is bothered – well provided we are flying business

      • Harry says:

My husband is like that. But that of course understates the male readership!

      • Barry says:

Same here, although I’m in a two male household. My partner just accepts the lengths we go to to bag a few extra points providing we get to turn left. He leaves all the research to me and goes along with it.

      • CamFlyer says:

For long haul travel, my wife provides given inputs in the form of dates and business class requirements, and it is my responsibility to determine the optimal means of purchasing it. She likes the miles in that we are able to get high quality options with limited damage to the family [cash] budget, but can’t be bothered trying to optimize them (though she does understand that using certain credit cards is beneficial, e.g., I have finally gotten her to use an Amex Gold instead of [free] HSBC Rewards MC).

    • Tony Hart says:

Yep! My wife and I are into this together. We describe it as our luxury travel hacking hobby. No kids so we often discuss such geekery over dinner.

    • Ali M says:

Interesting so much traction on this

My wife usually cooperates but a bit of ‘ugh, not again’ and I am left with having to say things like ‘its just an extra click, the app is installed on your phone, you just go through it’ . Missed opportunities like 5 x points when have done a 1000 pound + purchase and to me feels like easy 5000 avios which have been missed due to not being mindful 😛

note to self – husbands are more cooperative than wives are in playing this game !
If the marriage I am in doesnt work out in the years to come, I am going to try a husband for a change ha!

    • Nate1309 says:

My wife really enjoys it when we hop hotels every day towards the end of the year if we are short on Hilton stays 🤥

  • Terry says:

I don’t qualify for HSBC Premier, and only travel for leisure purposes (1 or 2 short haul and 2 or 3 long haul round trips per year). As I was no longer getting the value out of Amex Platinum, I switched to the Halifsx WE card, and have been more than happy with it. I’ve not been refused access to a lounge yet, and the full access to restaurant credits are a welcomed addition over Amex Platinum’s PP offering.

I don’t recall seeing this card listed on the survey?

  • Man of Kent says:

Please to see us residents of Norfolk getting a special mention!!
