Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Do you earn more Avios from BP or Esso when buying fuel?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Three weeks ago we went back over the basics of the Avios and BPme Rewards partnership, showing how you can transfer your BPme Rewards points into Avios.

The transfer rate is attractive. If you have 200 BPme Rewards points, you can get 125 Avios or a £1 discount on your fuel. At 0.8p per Avios, you are ‘buying’ them at a good rate.

Is this better than earning Avios from Esso though?

Is it better to earn Avios from BP or Esso when buying fuel?

Esso is not an Avios partner. You can, however, collect Nectar points when you buy fuel at Esso and these can be transferred into Avios.

Let’s have a look at the numbers.

Earning Avios at BP garages

The earning rate for BPme Rewards points at BP garages is:

  • 1 BPme point for every litre of regular fuel purchased
  • 2 BPme points for every litre of Ultimate fuel purchased
  • 1 BPme point for every £1 spent in a BP forecourt shop

If we convert these to Avios, you get:

  • 0.625 Avios for every litre of regular fuel purchased
  • 1.25 Avios for every litre of Ultimate fuel purchased
  • 0.625 Avios for every £1 spent in a BP forecourt shop

Earning Avios at Esso garages

The earning rate for Nectar points at Esso garages is:

  • 1 Nectar point for every litre of fuel purchased
  • 2 Nectar points per £1 spent on other items, including in the store

If we convert these to Avios, you get:

  • 0.625 Avios for very litre of fuel purchased
  • 1.25 Avios per £1 spent on other items, including in the store

Remember that you do not earn Nectar points at the 200 Esso garages which have a Tesco store attached. You can earn Tesco Clubcard points at these garages, which can be converted to Virgin Points if you wish.

Is it better to earn Avios from BP or Esso when buying fuel?

Which is better?

It’s not difficult to analyse these two earning rates.

The deals are identical for standard grade fuel.

But if you buy premium fuel ….

The only exception is if you pay for premium fuel, in which case BP is the better choice due to double points on Ultimate.

But if you spend in the shop whilst buying fuel ….

On the other hand, if you tend to buy something in the shop alongside your fuel, Esso is the better deal due to the higher rate on in-store earning – unless it is an Esso with a Tesco store, in which case you can’t earn Nectar points at all!

Coupons and bonuses may make the difference

Both Esso, via the Nectar app, and BP, via the BPme Rewards app, offer bonus points from time to time.

Given the relatively small number of Avios earned from filling your tank at standard rates, a bonus is likely to make the difference as to which is more rewarding. In my personal experience, BPme Rewards is more aggressive with promotional offers.

Perhaps more realistically, the fairest thing to say is that buying petrol is unlikely to earn you a huge amount of Avios irrespective of whether you shop at Esso or BP.

You will probably earn more Avios from the credit card you use to pay for your fuel than from the fuel itself.

It might be worth settling for an easy life and filling up at the garage most convenient for your home or office, irrespective of what you earn. You are also likely to find fuel cheaper at your local supermarket (although the gap these days is smaller than it has been historically) – and you would earn Nectar points to convert to Avios at a Sainsbury’s petrol station, of course.

Nectar app bombards me with Esso offers, most often 350 bonus points for 20L.

    • Vit says:

Just saved 5x on next fill up and 6x on the one after.

Before this within the last couple of month, no offer shown up at all on mine.

  • Nick says:

Since the beginning of this year I’ve personally had significantly more Esso bonus Nectar offers than BPme Reward points offers. If I remember rightly 2 X 10X Nectar points, 2 X 7X Nectar points and 3-4 X 300 bonus Nectar points/min 25L. Esso are also running an ongoing 3X Nectar points on Supreme for multi-fill up.

I think I’ve only had one fill up at BP with an offer when nothing available at that time from Esso.

PS. I’ve given up on Shell because most of their bonus offers tend to be competition type, which I’ve no interest in.

  • Matt says:

Same here. Recently had a x 10 nectar boost on Esso premium fuel.

Plus the local Esso is usually cheaper in the actual cost of the fuel compared to local BP

  • Gordon says:

As Rob says in the article says, the price gap between supermarkets and main fuel stations is closer than it has been for some years,

As I commented on the last article, I frequently use a Costco,(Thurrock) there are plans to build more. https://www.timeout.com/uk/news/costco-is-opening-14-branches-across-the-uk-heres-the-full-list-of-new-locations-081723
    One on my doorstep.

I’ve used costco since I have been a member, 30 years now, I use them for my fuel 90% of the time, if I get stuck I use a supermarket, namely my local Tesco (the points earned I use for shopping).

My vehicle has a 70 Litre fuel tank, so my cost for a full tank fill at each station is as follows, cost, high to low.

    Average Diesel prices from RAC.
    BP £1.59p litre x 70L = £111.30p,
    Esso £1.57p litre x 70L = £109.9p,
    Tesco £1.54p litre x 70L = £107.80p.
    Costco £1.51.9p litre x 70L = £106.33p

If I was spending someone else’s money on fuel, I would use BP, Esso or Shell, for points purposes, but I’ll stick to my plan for now unless prices narrow further!

  • Tracey says:

About time the electric charging network got in to the loyalty game.

    • memesweeper says:

Those on forecourts are typically completely unjoinedup with the brand that sells the fuel. Rather like the standalone air and water dispensers. Even the Shell and BP branded ones seem like very arms length businesses.

Given the very high margin (per kWh) on fast charging on forecourts and elsewhere, I can see a day when the charging networks compete with each other for business, and loyalty could really be a “thing” at that point. But right now the business phase is expansion, and the competition is petrol.

    • Patrick says:

Software for that is easy, you just need a few plug-ins 😁

  • Phil Foxtrot says:

I buy premium diesel. Although BP’s regular diesel is generally 2p or so more expensive, the mark-up to premium at my local BP is 14p, compared to Esso which is in excess of 20p. So BP every time.

  • Mikeact says:

I’ve been using the Esso app for a couple of years or so now. The biggest problem with it, is not showing the correct amount of points awarded. eg Yesterday, filled up the required minimum 30 litres, (and I’m on 6x bonus.) Amount showing on app receipt…30 Nectar points ….should be 180.
Another (5th time) email shot off. Apology received this morning…’points will be added,’ which, to be fair they always are, but still very annoying.

  • L Allen says:

I have BP garages close to where I live and where I visit family most weekends so I earn a couple of hundred Avios a month for very little effort. Plus I pay with some form of Amex so a few extra points are earned there. The auto transfer works well. I rarely use the vouchers that get printed in store, as the validity is too short, but I do make sure I add the offers in the app when they come up. If BP weren’t local, I wouldn’t drive out of my way to use them.
