Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Crazy …. match your BA status to SAS (SkyTeam) which you can match to Lufthansa (Star)!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

This is potentially the most intriguing deal I’ve seen all year. If you have British Airways elite status, you can match it to BOTH SkyTeam and Star Alliance status.

Even better, a British Airways Silver member will get top tier status in SkyTeam and Star Alliance, not mid tier!

In September, you would have status with all three airline alliances:

  • oneworld via your existing BA status
  • SkyTeam via SAS, as it moves from Star Alliance to SkyTeam on 1st September (SkyTeam status is valid with Virgin Atlantic)
  • Star Alliance via Lufthansa, which is currently matching SAS members

It also works with British Airways Bronze status, although the mid-tier benefits you get via Star Alliance and SkyTeam are not great. That said, your Miles & More Frequent Traveller status will get you lounge access when flying Lufthansa, Austrian and SWISS.

SkyTeam status match

Match your British Airways status to SAS EuroBonus

SAS is the Stockholm-based airline which is currently a member of Star Alliance and which is in the process of being acquired by Air France KLM.

On 1st September the airline will resign from Star Alliance and immediately join SkyTeam alongside Air France KLM and Virgin Atlantic.

You can match your British Airways Bronze, Silver or Gold status to SAS EuroBonus by filling in the form here.

It is very easy. You don’t even need to send screenshots of your current status although SAS reserves the right to ask for verification. You must open an SAS EuroBonus account before filling in the form.

The following matches are available:

  • oneworld Ruby to EuroBonus Silver
  • oneworld Sapphire or Emerald to EuroBonus Gold

BA Bronze is oneworld Ruby, BA Silver is oneworld Sapphire and BA Gold in oneworld Emerald.

Interestingly it will also match some other Star Alliance airlines:

  • Star Alliance Silver to EuroBonus Silver
  • Star Alliance Gold to EuroBonus Gold

How long does my SAS status last?

You will receive status until 31st March 2025. From 1st September 2024, this will be SkyTeam elite status after SAS switches alliances.

You can keep your status for another year by doing the following:

  • Silver – take two cash SAS flights by 31st March 2025
  • Gold – take five cash SAS flights by 31st March 2025
Star Alliance status match

How do I match my SAS status to Lufthansa (Star Alliance) status?

Lufthansa is keen to keep SAS elite members in the Star Alliance fold after 1st September and will match your SAS EuroBonus status.

The website you need is here.

SAS Silver members (which you get by having Bronze status in British Airways Executive Club) will get Frequent Traveller status in Miles & More. This only offers lounge access with Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian – but of course your British Airways Bronze card doesn’t get you any lounge access at all.

SAS EuroBonus Gold and above will be offered Senator status. This gets you Star Alliance-wide lounge access. Remember that you get SAS Gold by having British Airways Silver or Gold status.

Whichever level of Miles & More status you get, it will stop your existing Miles & More mileage balance from expiring as the 3 year ‘use them or lose them’ rule is suspended for elite members.

Assuming you go for Senator, you will receive status until 28th February 2025.

You can extend Senator to 28th February 2026 very easily via a status challenge. Credit six cash flights to your Miles & More account by 30th November 2024 and your Senator card will be extended by a year. There is an even easier two flight challenge to extend Frequent Traveller status.

Participating airlines for the status challenge are Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Discover Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa City, Luxair and SWISS.

The status match runs to 30th September. There is no benefit to delaying your application as your new Miles & More status will run to 28th February 2025 regardless. The quicker you apply, the more time you have to fit in the six cash flights to extend your new status.

Conclusion

This is an amazing opportunity to use your British Airways Executive Club status to get status in all three main airline alliances.

Even better, a Silver member in British Airways Executive Club will end up with top-tier status in SkyTeam and Star Alliance.

Who knows …. there may be an opportunity at some point to match that top-tier status in SkyTeam or Star Alliance to top-tier (BA Gold equivalent) status with a oneworld airline!

  • HH says:

So is it a good sign or bad sign if I submitted the form and got nothing by email (others seem to be getting an automated email)?

    • DM says:

I also did not get an automated email 🙁

    • Charlie says:

Receive near instant reply by email. Respond to the email address provided with documentation ensuring the Unique ID given at the bottom of the email (a combination of your current status number and your SAS number) are showing.

      • Bear says:

What programme did you match with and what browser did you use? I have been trying and got no confirmation whatsoever. I got the link from the email SAS sent me

  • DM says:

Seems that in the Luthansa T&Cs – ‘chainmatched’ statuses to Luthansa will be declined…. plus the six flight challenge to extend Senator going to be quite a push by November and it’s not clear if doing 2 flights would see you keep Frequent Traveller from matched Senator (if you manage to get it approved) so not sure that leg of this process is worth it.

    • Rob says:

Six flights are fairly easy. For eg, I need to go to Warsaw in October. I will book it on Lufty and go London – Frankfurt – Warsaw – Frankfurt – London. Four segments in one go and I’ll probably pay less than if I’d booked direct.

      • Vit says:

Yes, similar in my case for September I could get 6 segments in one return trip. EDI-FRA-MUN-OSL (exact same in return).

      • Charlie says:

LOT is your friend for inexpensive quick segments around Poland via Warsaw. I maintained AirNZ Gold for several years by getting the required extra segments when I was working in Poland. Looking at Lufty’s new chart, it looks like all LH Group segments are now revenue based where was that did not used to be the case. LOT (which count towards the 6 segments) are still credited by fare class, however the LOT website used to be good at displaying the fare class before booking and the lowest buckets seem to count. Also, Warsaw is one of the complimentary Finnair Northern European destinations. So if anyone with OneWorld Emerald fancied a nice little trip via Helsinki and on the A350 to LHR in Premium Economy seats it is quite a nice little route.

    • Lobster says:

Yes, that’s what the T&C say (complete with typos): “Any application where StatusMatch.com belives the origin account has not earned the status through flight activity qualifying as per the standard program criteria, or ‘chain matched’ from another program, will be declined.”

      • Rob says:

But there is zero way of them knowing this EXCEPT when the status you are applying with was got via statusmatch.com.

    • Blair Waldorf Salad says:

“chainmatched’ statuses to Luthansa will be declined”
      – can you say more on this? How is it defined?

      • Shadow says:

I have matched my SAS EB gold status from Finnair earlier from statusmatch.com and the request to match to LH have been refused by statusmatch.com due to “not earned status”

        • Rob says:

That’s statusmatch.com earning their $ for the airlines by blocking this sort of thing.

      • Ian says:

Well I suspect doing exactly what HfP is telling people they can do….matching BA to SAS and then trying to use the matched SAS status to get LH status. Another example of something appearing simpler than it really is!

        • Rob says:

Except statusmatch.com only knows you were comped in the first place if you got your status through them.

I was comped SAS status last year by the airline, have never used it and LH was happy to match it.

          • Lobster says:

I think it’s probably safe to post this, given that it appears they’re already clamping down: Wouldn’t the Eurobonus membership number give a clue as to whether someone has had an account for a while or just opened it? If you (Rob) were comped a year ago then yours would be fine, whereas mine (and others’ here) would scream “July 2024”.

  • Doug says:

how much are they charging for this

  • duggie1982 says:

Nice find Rob, loosing my BA silver soon so this could come in handy

  • Paul says:

I’m going to give this a shot.

On the question of whether LHG would honour the EB “new” status, it seems to me that it makes sense for them to do so.

In my case, if I get EB gold, I’m likely to put some autumn flights the way of SAS to extend the status into 2025.

However if LHG match it, as I’ve already got some LHG group flights that autumn spend will go to the them… thus securing *A favouritism for 2025. And isn’t that the whole point – to get us to prefer one alliance over another?

  • points_worrier says:

Gave SAS a go. Failed because I had put my SAS number in as EBXXXXXXXXX as on the website, rather than XXXXXXXXX.
    Drat.

    • points_worrier says:

I’ve also chuckled at the email from SAS inviting me to join their ‘conscious traveler’ programme. I know I am partial to some alcohol whilst traveling, but I would like to think I usually retain basic consciousness…!

  • P says:

If I have Virgin Silver which airlines will match? Will British match?

    • Rob says:

BA virtually never matches, but other oneworld carriers might.

  • OnTheRun says:

I will be travelling and earning points on UA (which I understand is not on the list of eligible partner airlines to extend status)

My question is one of lounge access.

If I manage to obtain LH Senator status, is it possible to use a *A lounge, even though I am not crediting the flight to that particular airline?

For example is it possible to use UA club lounge with the LH Senator?

    (New to this stuff!)

    Thank you

    • Rob says:

      Yes

    • Charlie says:

If you have Star Gold status with any Star Alliance airline you have access to all Star business lounges. Some, such as Lufty and LOT, have separate lounges for golds that tend to be better than the business class lounges in Europe. However, United, Singapore, ANA reverse this by offering business class lounges mainly only to business class fares. Use the Star Alliance web page to establish what you are eligible for with United. Finally, if you have Amex Platinum you can access some Lufthansa lounges – the business lounges if you have an economy ticket and the gold lounges if you have a business ticket. Check out the Amex lounge page for that, but it is not correct (for example at Munich only two lounges are eligible, not all).
