Amex Platinum cardholders can now pre-book UK airport lounges for FREE

American Express has responded to issues over the unavailability of UK airport lounges for Priority Pass cardholders.

Effectively immediately, holders of The Platinum Card can pre-book selected UK airport lounges for free.

This is only a six month trial but if successful I would expect it to continue, possibly replacing the Harvey Nichols credit as a benefit from 2025 if that is not carried over.

Priority Pass airport lounge prebooking

How many lounges can you pre-book?

If you have The Platinum Card or the Centurion card, you will have received FOUR pre-booking credits which need to be used by 31st December 2024.

You need one credit per person entering the lounge, so a couple would require two credits.

Here is an important point: supplementary cardholders receive their own pre-booking allowance. If you haven’t issued the free supplementary card on your Platinum account to your regular travel companion, you may want to do so now. (This person also receives all of the hotel elite status benefits.)

Note that this offer does not apply to holders of American Express Business Platinum cards.

How do you pre-book an airport lounge?

You need to download the Priority Pass and register your card.

Search for a participating lounge and you will see a button which allows you to prebook.

If you visit the Priority Pass website here you can see some screenshots of how it is meant to work.

I tried to do a dummy booking to create my own screenshots but it wasn’t working. I’m not sure if it isn’t live yet or if an app update will appear later today.

Am I guaranteed to be able to pre-book?

No.

Some lounges do not release pre-booking slots at peak times. This is usually when an airline has pre-booked some or all of a lounge for its own passengers.

Which lounges are participating?

At the moment, the only participating lounges are those run by Swissport (Aspire), Collinson (the owners of Priority Pass) or Airport Dimensions, which is a Swissport / Collinson joint venture.

This means that you won’t, for example, be able to access any Plaza Premium lounges. The only Heathrow Terminal 5 option is the Club Aspire lounge.

Here is the list with links to the relevant page of the Priority Pass site:

Note that two Clubrooms sites are included

‘Clubrooms’ is the premium lounge brand offered by No1 Lounges, with improved food and drink.

Pre-booking these lounges usually costs £15 instead of £6 because it includes a supplement to cover the premium Clubrooms product. American Express appears happy to pay the full £15 on your behalf.

If you are flying from Birmingham or London Gatwick, it makes sense to prebook Clubrooms instead of any other lounge.

Conclusion

This is a good step forward for holders of The Platinum Card.

Adding Plaza Premium would obviously be another step forward – although that would require Priority Pass to do a deal with the competition – but hopefully this will reduce complaints about UK lounge overcrowing this summer.

  • Roy says:

I don’t see why allowing Plaza Premium pre-booking would require Priority Pass to “do a deal with the competition”. Amex already has a direct relationship with Plaza Premium which bypasses Priority Pass so it would make more sense for Amex to leverage that existing relationship.

  • LittleNick says:

Would definitely make the platinum offer more appealing if this benefit is kept along with all the others and no removal on any dining/HN credits

  • BajanNation says:

At LGW South, the £18 (x2 with Supp holder) off the bill at Pizza Express still remains a far more attractive option than going to a packed Lounge. But good news Amex are tackling the issue which for many Lounge access is no doubt a major attraction of the card.

  • Byron Lewis says:

Don’t know if anyone else is having trouble getting the 6 digit code sent through to their email address? I can’t book spaces at all at the moment!

    • PeteM says:

Nope, have you checked your spam folder?

      • Byron says:

Yes tried a few times now via phone and laptop, a bit annoying as I want to book a lounge!!

    • Christine says:

I’m having the same problem. Check junk/spam and no email there either.

  • Steven says:

Apologies for the amateur question but have not used lounges that often. Can the Priority Pass lounges also be used at the arrival airport or is it just the departure airport only? Or does it just vary from lounge to lounge? Many thanks.

    • Mark says:

In my experience, varies wildly based on the lounge.

    • David says:

If you got the PP from Plat. It’s any. Worldwide if it’s not busy obvs.

    • Susan says:

If there’s an arrivals lounge or the lounge is landside of security then yes but these are very rare. The vast majority of lounges will be in the post-security departures area so not (usually) physically accessible to arriving pax.

  • Alan says:

Is this meant to be live for everyone or just a test Amex are doing, Rob? No email received here and still shows £6 when trying to do a dummy booking.

Agree with other posts that 4 seems far too all a number of passes given how this card is marketed as a travel card and also it’s nowhere near a replacement for the HN credit (even if it’s worth more like £75 I’ve once you adjust your HN silly prices!).

  • Geoggy says:

I flew out of Manchester T1 yesterday and had paid the £12 to pre book for my wife & I. The guy on the Aspire reception said he had no record of my booking, despite me showing him the receipt, but “he let us in because it’s quiet.”

I’ve raised this with PP as I’ve also pre paid for 4 of us for the same lounge in late August the it will be busy and do t want to get turned away.

So this added benefit is only a benefit if it actually works!

  • Michael S says:

    Thank god

Still, a pre booking of an airport lounge has been the most ridiculous travel development over last 10 years

It’s an airport, you’re supposed to spend as minimal time as possible airside. Lounge receptionist asking you if you have a pre booking as if you arrived for dinner at chiltern firehouse never made sense to me

But at least we don’t have to pay.. for something we were not supposed to pay in the first place

    • Peter K says:

Blame the airlines for slow check-in and airports for the slow security for people turning up early, not wanting to miss their flights.

Then the overcrowding in airport terminals makes the relative quiet of a lounge something to desire.

Demand goes up, lounge size can’t, so they go for the most profitable way to fill them.

Your PP is a space available upgrade effectively, same as a potential status upgrade at a hotel. Not guaranteed. That hasn’t changed. This difference is true gives you 4 guaranteed lounge access jokers to use each year.
