Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

How to turn off the annoying Amex ‘Do you want to pay with points?’ pop-up window

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

For a while now, when you make a purchase with an American Express card which offers Membership Rewards points, Amex has been trying to get you to pay with points.

It’s annoying.

And, even worse, it’s terrible value.

Pay with Amex Membership Rewards points

Luckily, there is a way of turning it off.

What I’m talking about is this screen which pops up when you are trying to make an online purchase:

Pay with Amex Membership Rewards points

There are probably many people who accidentally click ‘Use points’. This is not good as the rate if you click ‘Use points’ is £4.50 per 1,000 Membership Rewards points. This is shockingly bad, considering that you get 1,000 Avios for the same number of points.

Luckily, there is a solution

Next time you have this box pop up, click the cogwheel in the top right corner.

This menu will appear:

Pay with Membership Rewards points

The bottom option here is ‘Show Pay-with-points options when available’. If you toggle this option off, you will never be shown the ‘pay with points’ box again.

Not only does it ensure that you will never make an expensive mistake in the future, it will also speed up your checkout for online purchases.

  • Char Char says:

Thanks has been wondering if possible

  • Sam says:

Good tip. Surely this window doesn’t appear for supplementary card holders?

  • BJ says:

    Great tip, thanks 🙂

Whilst on the topic of these amex payments, I often have a problem typing the SafeKey in the box provided for it. The box and keyboard both show but when pressing the keyboard the numbers do not appear in the box and I have to start over. This only happens for me with amex SafeKey, no other OTP. Anybody else have this issue or know what’s going on?

    • BBbetter says:

Sounds like a browser issue. Have you tried on other devices and browsers?

      • BJ says:

Thanks, two different browsers on same tablet, it doesn’t happen all the time though. I cannot recall if it ever happened on my phone.

    • L Allen says:

I always click once in the box before typing in the number to make sure it has ‘focus’. I notice this happens a lot on site with MFA.

      • BJ says:

Thanks for tip, I’ll look for site patterns as I just replied to @BBB it doesn’t happen every time.

  • Doc says:

    Thank you. Very useful

  • darcy says:

Thank you! I should earn points for the number of times that I had to click that thing off. 🙂

  • LittleNick says:

Great! Very very helpful thanks as it’s such a poor value. I didn’t realise the supplementary cardholder could spend my points in this way as it’s never come up for them so assumed it would always be just me waiting to press the wrong button

  • holland says:

Excellent. Does it suppress the need to click through that window completely?

After a couple of occasions where I failed to click continue and subsequently the purchase did not complete, I switched entirely to barclaycard avios for online purchases.

    • TGLoyalty says:

No as it’s part of the online verification process which might ask you for a OTP.

What issue do you have using it?

  • @mkcol says:

Or just use Google Wallet 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • Ironside says:

…and hand over your purchase history to Google.

      For free.
