(DEAL DEAD) Get British Airways Silver equivalent status by matching your HOTEL status!

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

We’ve talked a lot about airline status matches recently. Many airlines have become a lot more aggressive in their attempts to poach the best customers of their rivals.

If you have elite status with any airline alliance, there is probably a route out there to get status with any other alliance.

However, what happens if you don’t have elite airline status to start with?

Wouldn’t it be great if you could use your HOTEL elite status to get elite airline status?

And wouldn’t it be even better if you could do this to get elite status benefits with British Airways?

Now you can, for a limited period, albeit for a small fee.

You can apply here. But read on first.

Royal Jordanian status match

Royal Jordanian has been running an on/off status match from other airlines for a while.

It has now extended it to anyone with elite hotel status.

To take part, you must live in the UK or Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Netherlands, Oman, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey or the UAE.

The application form allows you to select other countries but you will be rejected if you select one which is not listed above.

Royal Jordanian is a BA partner in the oneworld alliance

British Airways will respect your newly minted Royal Jordanian status, including for lounge access.

Royal Jordanian is a member of the oneworld alliance, alongside British Airways. If you have Gold Sparrow status with Royal Jordanian, you will receive virtually all of the benefits of British Airways Silver status when you fly with BA:

  • BA lounge access for you and a guest? Tick
  • Priority security? Tick
  • Extra baggage allowance? Tick
  • Use business class check-in desks? Tick
  • Free seat selection? Tick
  • Priority boarding? Tick

Your Royal Jordanian status will also be valid when flying with the other oneworld carriers – Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, American Airlines, Qantas etc.

Which hotel statuses is Royal Jordanian matching?

You can match status from the following programmes to Royal Jordanian.

I have listed the status level you need to get Gold Sparrow status with Royal Jordanian, which is equivalent to British Airways Silver.

Royal Jordanian status match
  • Accor (Diamond, Platinum)
  • Global Hotel Alliance (Titanium)
  • Hilton (Diamond)
  • Hyatt (Globalist)
  • IHG (Platinum, Diamond)
  • Langham (Ruby, Sapphire)
  • Marriott (Platinum, Titanium, Ambassador)
  • Melia (Platinum)
  • Preferred Hotels (Platinum)
  • Shangri-La (Diamond)
  • Wyndham (Diamond)

It is not matching any Radisson level to Gold Sparrow.

If you have a lower tier of hotel status, you can probably be matched to Silver Jay status which is equivalent to British Airways Bronze status.

Hilton and Marriott Gold status, which is free with American Express Platinum, would match to Silver Jay (BA Bronze equivalent) status for example.

You can still match airline status too

The following airline statuses can also be matched to Gold Sparrow (BA Silver equivalent) status:

  • Air Europa (Gold, Platinum)
  • Air France KLM (Gold, Platinum, Ultimate)
  • Egyptair (Elite, Gold, Platinum)
  • Emirates (Gold, Platinum)
  • Etihad (Gold, Platinum)
  • Gulf Air (Gold, Black)
  • Kuwait Airways (Gold, Platinum)
  • Lufthansa et al (Senator, HON Circle)
  • Middle East Airlines (Gold, Platinum, Presidents Club)
  • Oman Air (Gold)
  • Saudia (Gold)
  • Scandinavian Airlines (Gold, Diamond, Pandion)
  • TAP Air Portugal (Gold, Navigator)
  • Turkish Airlines (Elite, Elite Plus)
  • Virgin Atlantic (Gold)

Again, remember that if you have a lower tier of airline status, you can probably match to Silver Jay status which is equivalent to British Airways Bronze.

Royal Jordanian status match

You can’t get top tier status via this match

Before I go on, you need to know that Royal Jordanian has different status tiers to British Airways. When I talk about ‘Gold’ or ‘Silver’, you need to note which airline I am discussing.

Royal Club, the Royal Jordanian programme, has three elite levels:

  • Platinum Hawk is the same as British Airways Gold
  • Gold Sparrow is the same as British Airways Silver
  • Silver Jay is the same as British Airways Bronze

Royal Jordanian is not matching to Platinum Hawk status. If you are top tier with another programme, you will only get Gold Sparrow. This still gets you lounge access with British Airways, however.

How long will my Royal Jordanian status last?

12 months.

Do I need to put my Royal Jordanian status in my British Airways bookings to get my benefits?

You will definitely need to put your Royal Jordanian number into future BA bookings to get free seat selection.

You may NOT need it for lounge access, priority boarding etc because much of the time you can show one card to an agent and keep a different number in your booking. At airports with automated gates you may need to have your Royal Jordanian number in your booking to access priority security lines.

You would need to swap the frequent flyer number in your booking at check-in to earn Avios and tier points. You could also do it in the lounge if there was a BA ticket desk.

The bottom line is that you need a boarding pass in your hand at the time of boarding which shows your BAEC number if you want to earn Avios and tier points, instead of Royal Jordanian miles and tier credit.

(Frankly, for short haul flights which earn minimal tier points or Avios, you might as well put your Royal Jordanian number in your booking and leave it there. You’re not losing much.)

Is there a fee for the status match?

Yes. There is a $149 application fee for Gold Sparrow status.

Silver Jay, equivalent to British Airways Bronze status, has a lower $49 fee. Whilst this doesn’t come with lounge access, you could still make a substantial saving on British Airways seat selection, which would be available for free from seven days before travel.

How do I apply?

You will need to sign up for a Royal Jordanian account before applying for your match. There is a link on the status match site.

The terms state that your match will be processed within five business days.

The match is being processed by a third party, statusmatch.com, so you will see references to them whilst applying. Ensure you read the T&C to be sure that you have the correct status in order to make a match.

There is a special website for the status match which is here.

Has anyone figured out how to add their new Gold Sparrow card to Apple Wallet? There is a button to add in the rather clunky RJ app, but is doesn’t do anything (at least not for me).

    • Julie Bissett says:

I can’t add it to my wallet either. Weird because I could add it fine before I had gold sparrow.

    • Charlie says:

As long as your RJ number is attached to the booking, the embarrassment of claiming you are a ‘gold sparrow’ will be avoided more often than not, as the business lounges at Heathrow have automatic gates. That is not the case at Edinburgh, for example, where there will be giggles by the lounge angels. Top tip: if you are in a BA business lounge at Edinburgh or London, ask one of the friendly lounge angels for a glass of champagne. If you are a ‘gold sparrow’, then your secret phrase is: ‘…nineteen gold sparrows sat on my bum’ followed by a wink. And you’ll get a complimentary glass of champagne. 🙂

  • Sam says:

    Hi guys,

Thank you for pointing out this deal. I’m now a Gold Sparrow!

Is there a process one can follow to update existing bookings? Literally a bulleted list? I’m very keen not to lose Avios/Tier Points that would be credited to my BA account

Thank you in advance, this community is great,

    Sam

    • Charlie says:

Have you won the lottery?! No! Because you neglected to buy a lottery ticket. Search upthread where an outcome to your process is provided. Over. And over. And over. And over 🙂

  • Nick L says:

I just called to try and change my BA booking FF number to my new Royal Jordanian for a flight which i booked with an Amex Companion Voucher (Single Traveller, Upgrade).
BA Customer Service are saying that it needs to remain as the BA FF Exec Club number as it’s booked using an Amex Voucher. Anyone managed to change one booked this way?

    • Charlie says:

Your issue is not to do the with Amex Companion voucher, but that both FF fields have been populated with your BA number, akin to using someone else’s Avios account to book a flight (where the Avios account used and your own Avios number are both on the same booking). Have you tried the solutions provided upthread? Finnair/RJ/Qatar etc.? It is likely that one of those options will work to remove your BA FF number from field two so that you can replace it with your RJ number. If not, call BA again until you find someone that knows how to do it.

      • Nick says:

Great shout, didn’t even cross my mind to use a non BA site to change. I’ll give a try, cheers.

  • BPN says:

Sadly I have missed the promotion this time 🙁 Does anyone know how often do RJ reopen the status match offer to hotel elite status? Was hoping to get their Gold status with my Hilton Diamond…

    • Rob says:

Never been done before and won’t happen again if those who got matched never fly RJ ….

  • Pilpup says:

Stupid question – how do you know that BA “recognizes” your new status?

    • Charlie says:

It all goes back to 1st February 1999, when the OneWorld alliance was created.

      • Pilpup says:

No I get that, but will I see confirmation on the BA site? Or do I trust that if I get my RJ number on a booking it will work?

        • Charlie says:

RJ ‘Gold Sparrow’ has OneWorld Sapphire status. If you have a BA or OneWorld segment, and show your ‘Gold Sparrow’ card (this will be embarrassing) you will have access to fast track security and lounge access by just showing your card. To make things easier, and less embarrassing, if you add the RJ Gold Sparrow number to your booking, then the boarding pass will contain the ‘Gold Sparrow’ OWS status, and no-one at security, for example, will be any the wiser that you are a tit – a Gold Sparrow tit of course – because in their eyes you will just be the equivalent of a BA Silver cardholder.

        • Charlie says:

I was jesting with my previous comment 🙂 If you have successfully attached your RJ number to your booking, and you are an RJ ‘Gold’, then your BA boarding pass will automatically let you through fast track security and access business class level lounges, plus choose seats earlier than you might otherwise be able to.

          • Adam says:

If you don’t add it to your booking, is it suffice to show your Golden Sparrow card and/or QR code at fast-track and the BA lounge?

          • Porreca says:

Hi Charlie, since you are so nice and take the time to answer lots of questions here; would you be so kind to explain to me why you keep referring that saying or showing that one is “Gold Sparrow” is embarrasing? What is there to be embarrased about? Thank you

  • andy says:

All updated to me and seats on BA and other airlines all sorted! Only one that doesn’t work is a MH flight that i redeemed via Qatar. For some reason there is no FF flyer on the booking (Not even my Qatar one) and each time i udpate it via Maroc or even MH it doesn’t stick.
I asked MH chat to do it and they said they had…but it’s still not showing so i guess i’ll just take a hit on that one…

  • Sam says:

Is it possible to register Gold Sparrow for the airport privileges, lounge etc and still earn BA Tier Points/Avios for the booking?

  • Scott says:

How long did it take for the silver birds to have the 24hr seat selection change to 7days?
I have the RJ number showing in my details and the partners BA exec In hers? Still saying 24hrs..

    • Tubbs says:

The RJ number shows against my booking on BA, provided that I do not log in (in that circumstance it shows my BA number). It has been like that for a few days but still showing free seat selection from 24 hours rather than 7 days. Frustrating!

      • Pilpup says:

        Same…

        • Dan says:

Same here, have been trying for best part of a week and finally removed the numbers via Maroc and called BA to add the numbers over the phone. He acknowledged it had come up with Oneworld Ruby after giving my RJ number. However an hour later It’s still saying seat selection is 24 hours ahead on manage my booking.
