A quick one, because it’s more important that we get this up quickly than pad it out!

Virgin Atlantic has extended its Cape Town service by a month. Instead of ending in late March, at the end of the winter flying season, flights are now scheduled for April 2025 too.

This covers the Easter school holidays which generally run from Saturday 5th April to Sunday 20th April.

The bad news is that it is a Boeing 787-9 service, so you will get the very dated Upper Class seat. However, any regular HfP reader will know that getting business class seats to Cape Town is incredibly difficult, so it is worth putting up with it.

    That’s somewhat incorrect – the return flight from CPT is a day flight, leaving around 10am. It’s been like this for a few years – this was already pointed out a couple of months ago when you ran another piece on VS from CPT.

    We’re on the day flight back in Premium in January with a civilised 1030 departure. Dunno why BA and now VS insist on keeping their birds on the ground all day in SA when a day flight in anything other than J is much preferable, same same as ex east coast USA which actually thinking about it is pretty rubbish overnight in J as you’re lucky to get 4 hours kip

      BTW there are daytime flights BOS-LHR, JFK-LHR, ORD-LHR.

      US east coast is just about maximising aircraft utilisation with it also suiting the airlines as more night flights = more J revenue. If the service was focussed on what customers actually want, there would be many more daytime flights.

      Even ORD-FRA proved too short for me to get a decent night’s sleep in a flat seat, I can only see something like BOS-LHR working if one’s very tired and/or boozed up.

      For airlines that go after cheapskate customers, it may well be the case that a day flight is better. But BA doesn’t… they want business customers who pay through the nose to maximise efficiency by flying overnight. Note that Durban ran as a day flight in one direction, reflecting its lower-yield nature as a leisure and VFR route.

      One of my favourite stories is from when BA tried desperately to make a day flight work HKG-LHR, but whatever they did customers wouldn’t pay for it and eventually it had to be scrapped.

    Thought I would check the fares in W so that I can have a chance of using my upgrade vouchers without paying extortionate surcharges. Just £1600+ exLHR or €1900+ exCDG. They can keep their vouchers, I will continue using my VS miles on AF redemptions.

    Did seats to Antigua and Barbados get released at the same time, since they were also increasing them after dropping Bahamas and Turks/Caicos, or were they already bookable?

      Those seats were already available because Bahamas / Turks were just tags on those services. To be honest I never worked out exactly how they managed the guaranteed availability for the tag routes.

        I thought there was a frequency increase hitting those routes though and as a result, there should be new seats?
