Qatar Airways Privilege Club has raised taxes and charges on Avios redemptions sharply last night in a ‘no notice’ move.

In general, around £125 per sector has been added to Business Class tickets.

This means a return flight with an aircraft change in Doha has risen by around £500 per person on longer routes.

I haven’t had time to do a deep dive yet but here is one example.

This is Heathrow to Brisbane, priced a few months ago for an earlier HfP article:

As you can see, you were paying £613 plus 180,000 Avios for a return flight in Business Class.

Here is the same route priced last night:

Taxes and charges are now £563 per person, return, higher at £1,176.

If you nominally value an Avios at 1p, the overall implied cost has jumped from (£613 + £1,800) £2,413 to (£1,176 + £1,800) £2,976 which is an increase of 23%.

Suddenly those £1,900 return China Eastern cash tickets in Business Class between Amsterdam and Sydney look more appealing ….

    This reinforces my view of the Avios ecosystem as being a very risky investment due to essentially having a single point of failure for many/most routes. The lack of zonal pricing for partners* means that anything involving a connection will tend to be poor value, so you’re limited to QR and possibly AY for redemptions to Asia, and this increase actually provides AY with an incentive to increase their own surcharges. With the other two alliances, there’s obviously risk of mileage devaluation but it’s far less likely that EVA/TR/LH or AF/VN/Garuda could get involved in any alignment/collusion over surcharges.

    * Certainly that’s the case for redeeming through BA/IB/QR, not sure if it also applies to Finnair accounts

    How long until IB fees are increased as well? If they are planning on having a one avios booking platform they will need to make sure everything has crappy fees like BA.

      The saving grace there is that MAD is a super competitive market, it’s not unusual to see business fares to the Americas for less than €1500 rtn all in. Increasing their fees to BA levels would result in pax abandoning IB+ and switching to UX or *A. Not to say they won’t do it, but it’s a much bigger risk than screwing over the LHR crowd.

        It’s not so much that MAD is such a super competitive market, because London is as well. It’s simply supply and demand whereby London is the much stronger market that has commanded higher long haul prices than any other European city in Europe for decades. We also have the £200pp extra APD on all premium cabin fares.

          London is competitive but MAD is on a different level – just LATAM, Avianca, and Aeroméxico operate to 11 long haul destinations and there are FIVE different airlines flying to CCS alone. Of course, there’s less traffic between Madrid and Latin America than between London and the USA, but the latter routes see less competition due to the 3 JV cartels.

          That’s true, but high prices and/or captive customers are products of a combination of high demand and restricted supply. The supply for Barajas-Latin America is basically only constrained by market forces whereas LHR-USA is both subject to slot restrictions and JV coordination.

    This fee rise must have happened last night because I booked HKG – DOH- CDG one way in biz and first yesterday and the taxes and fees for 2 were £360.

    MAN – MEL Feb 2025 return BNE – MAN March 2025 in Bus. booked April this year for 180k Avios plus £578 tax pp. I can’t reprice at the moment because their site isn’t playing ball at the moment for multi destinations. I remember it took several attempts at the time too!

    Man, was looking to book a Toyko redemption with Qatar in October/November for 2025 but looks like I’ll hold off now and use the points with BAPP’s voucher. Need to decide how much value there actually is now…

    Looks like prices have gone back to what it was before? I just did another search for man-doh-Hkg return and it did go up to £867, it is now showing £592….

        I see the fees have dropped for EDI to KUL, 2 pax, biz, one way, this morning was 180k and £1097, now same avios but dropped to £822. Note on a booking made earlier this year was 150K avios.

        Please do post what they say and whatever excuse they come up with to justify the increase. Probably to pay for the caviar as someone said on FT!

          I know what it is because we talked about it weeks ago (and I implied this was coming in the HfP comments). It’s about justifying to Revenue Management the value of releasing seats for Avios at a time when fares remain high and aircraft are full.

        Ask them if they can fix it this time next month please 🙂 on a more serious note do youvever discuss with airlines the goodwill value of providing notice of changes like this? I think most of us accept that things change but no notice of changes arevmuch harder to swallow. I often wonder if this affects bookings intentions but I’m huessing not much as airlines see the effects and go ahead anyway.

    Sad, we have a flight booked for October, looks like it will be our last as well as our first with them. I had been Buying Avios with the boost feature but will stop now.

    Did IST TO ORD (F ist to doh and J doh to ord) last week and was 85k + $244

    Just looked for similar time in 2025 and only got J and J flights and 85k + $332 now

    So a 30% + rise in fees etc
