Emirates opens its lounge at London Stansted

There is good news for passengers on Emirates flights from London Stansted, with the Emirates lounge finally opening yesterday.

This is actually good news for EVERYONE who uses Stansted and who holds a Priority Pass airport lounge card.

Emirates was the major user of the Escape lounge in the main terminal, which was virtually impossible to access with Priority Pass for much of the day. With those passengers gone, a substantial number of daily slots will open up.

Emirates Lounge London Stansted airport

Emirates has spent more than £4 million on its lounge, which can hold up to 125 passengers. It covers 900 sq m in total.

It becomes the sixth Emirates lounge in the UK following London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Birmingham, Glasgow, and Manchester. British Airways only has lounges at five UK airports – Heathrow, Gatwick, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Emirates, as the first Middle Eastern airline to make a big push into the UK, invested heavily in its own facilities because independent lounges were either non-existent or poor. Carriers who came later, such as Etihad and Qatar Airways, have – outside Heathrow – tended to partner with the best available independent lounge available.

It is to the credit of Emirates that it is still happy to invest in its own facilities. Other airlines would have been happy to offer to co-fund a premium independent lounge instead.

The decor should not come as a surprise to anyone who has been in an Emirates lounge recently: in fact, it looks virtually identical to the Emirates lounge at Heathrow Terminal 3 which we reviewed this summer.

In other words, beige and brown leather armchairs, arabesque lattices and fresh cut flowers at every table. It’s not the most modern or innovative but matches the airline’s aircraft interiors.

If its other UK lounges are anything to go by then you should expect an excellent buffet service – far superior to those in other lounges – as well as a good selection of drinks.

Emirates has been flying from Stansted since 2018. Whilst many people, including myself, were sceptical at the time, the route has performed well, especially with the many life sciences companies in the region. There are now two flights per day.

Stansted is also, I think, the only UK airport which has the astonishing new Emirates Boeing 777 First Class suite which I reviewed here.

The lounge is in Satellite 1 and may be in the spot that No1 Lounges used to have. It is a short walk to the gates used by Emirates and includes shower facilities. It is open from 11am until 3pm and from 5pm until 9pm daily, coinciding with the two daily flights.

The lounge is open to First and Business Class passengers travelling on Emirates as well as Emirates Skywards Gold and Platinum members.

Emirates has partnered with Sussex-based Full Circles Farms, to roll out a “farm to table” food concept, offering seasonal menus with fresh organic vegetables. Customers can also enjoy premium spirits and liqueurs, a selection of decent wine, and a range of the finest Moet & Chandon champagnes.

Emirates now offers a crazy 133 weekly flights from the UK. Emirates will start flying to its seventh UK airport with the launch of services to Edinburgh Airport from 4th November. Whilst initially operated by a Boeing 777, this will switch to the A350 as it receives these from December. Emirates has teased a new seat arriving on its A350s, although it’s unclear how revolutionary this will be.

It’s great to see investment like this. I was bumped from LH to EK on a trip from BHX to Dubai a while back and the lounge was the best at B’ham by a significant margin. Jokes aside about that not being difficult, it does defend the fact EK always seem more expensive than the competition.

  • Terry Butler says:

Rather telling now that a Middle Eastern airline has more lounges in Britain than British Airways does.🙄🙉

    • FlyingTayto says:

Not quite true, BA have more lounges, given there are 7 (?) in Heathrow, but Emirates are at more airports.

    • gumshoe says:

Not quite true as BA has five at LHR alone and two at LGW. But yes, EK does now have its own lounges at more UK airports than BA.

    • Rhys says:

Not more lounges. Lounges at more airports.

      • Andrew says:

True but BA doesnt fly from BHX (pitiful airport) or Stansted so not really a fair comparison.

        • lak says:

It does have a few weekend flights from Stansted

        • Petros says:

It does fly from STN (Florence, Nice, Ibiza, and I think there might be a fourth destination I’m currently forgetting). I actually flew last Sunday to FLR and can’t say it was a memorable experience. The airport is not in good shape, BA status doesn’t get you fast track, and the lounge (I think it’s the only lounge the airport has) was rather mediocre.

The only positive was that it was a 30-minute ride from Cambridge where I live – although National Express could certainly rethink its schedule…

  • supergraeme says:

Ooh, I’ve always wanted to go round the corner in the Escape Lounge!

  • Matthew says:

The occasional flight now has the game changer first class suites rather than every one. They may however, decide to put it on the route more now the lounge is open…

  • Tom says:

Sadly, STN lost the new F a while back, the only flight to the UK with it is currently EK41 but that is currently scheduled to end in October.

    • Rob says:

      Thanks

    • Tom says:

Where do you get the info from please? I’m hoping to redeem some points for the new first at some point but struggled to find the details beyond October!

      • Azzam says:

I did that in February and found best way is to go for Brussels or Feneva as all the flights are game changer F

        • Lumma says:

Is it really that game changing on a 6 hour flight?

          • Azzam says:

it’s one of those aspirational things for me that I say I tried it once

          • Tom says:

It is the world’s best F product for my money, yes. The full height closing doors make a massive difference to the level of privacy and noise to the extent it is the only product I’ve flown where I can guarantee I will sleep on the flight as a light sleeper (assuming no turbulence). Possibly AF F and The Residence are the same but I’ve never tried them.

It is just not the same travel class as e.g. BA F.

  • LittleNick says:

Sadly very little chance I’ll ever be able to give EK a go given they rarely ever seem to do discount/promo fares to DXB/Asia unlike EY. And given the cut in the transfer rate from AMEX MR to EK I won’t be redeeming on EK either. Would probably only ever fly them economy if competitive sadly

  • Richie says:

There are 3 BACF scheduled flights from STN on sunday mornings for the ski season, it’d be great if they did a deal with emirates for lounge access.

  • bibby135 says:

Done new F on 777 from Stansted once, few times in F on the existing design 777 and multiples times in F on the A380.
It would be the A380 for me every time – just because of the additional onboard facilities like the bar and shower.

The one occasion I tried the new F from Stansted was right after Rob did his review, and I happened to be booked on an A380 from LHR that very week, but decided to change my booking to Stansted to give it a go. It’s cool and the crew were all excited but it’s just a small box really and I prefer to feel more open. That’s why we really like BA First…..
