IHG One Rewards has announced a new global promotion which, interestingly, will sit alongside its OTHER global promotion that we covered a couple of weeks ago.

IHG One Rewards is the loyalty scheme covering InterContinental, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Hotel Indigo amongst other brands. However, none of those brands are taking part in this new offer as you will see!

You need to register for the ‘triple points’ bonus here.

You can learn more about IHG One Rewards in our overview article here.

How does IHG’s new bonus points promotion work?

The offer runs from 1st October to 31st December.

This is slightly different to the main global promotion (‘3,000 bonus points for every two nights, not necessarily consecutive’) which starts on 19th September. You can register for that offer here.

You must register for this new offer in advance via this link. Registration is now open.

What will you earn?

You will earn TRIPLE BASE POINTS for every cash stay during the offer period at these brands:

  • voco
  • avid hotels
  • EVEN Hotels
  • Atwell Suites
  • Garner Hotels

Realistically, as a UK resident the only brand you are likely to stay at is voco.

Existing bookings DO count so there is no need to rebook anything.  Only one room per stay counts towards the offer, so if you are booking multiple rooms you should put each in a different name.

What is a voco hotel?

voco is IHG’s ‘conversion’ brand, similar to Hilton’s DoubleTree or Marriott’s Delta.

It is aimed at hotels of any size, any style and any type which want to convert from their existing brand to IHG without much capital expenditure.

voco has very few ‘brand standards’. You are guaranteed that the hotel will be of a certain quality level, but literally nothing else (whether it has aircon, whether it has a standalone shower, whether it has a gym etc) is certain.

Here is our review of voco St David’s Hotel Cardiff which was the first to open in the UK.

What is the bonus worth?

The standard earning rate in IHG One Rewards is 10 points per US$1 (77p) excluding taxes.  I value an IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p although you can often do better, which means your base return is 4p per 77p spent, ie just over 5.0%.

Triple base points means that you would receive 30 points per US$1 (77p) spent, excluding taxes, which gives you a return of over 15%.

You would also receive a status bonus on your base points:

  • 20% bonus for Silver Elite
  • 40% bonus for Gold Elite
  • 60% bonus for Platinum Elite
  • 100% bonus for Diamond Elite

A Platinum Elite member would therefore receive 36 points per $1 spent – 10 points x 3 plus an extra 6 points as the Platinum Elite bonus.

You would ALSO receive your bonus points for the standard IHG promotion for autumn, which is 3,000 bonus points for every two cash nights you stay. You can register for that offer here and read more here.

Conclusion

This is an attractive offer, especially as voco hotels are spreading rapidly across the UK and most are decent midscale properties.

Your chance of staying in an outpost of avid hotels, EVEN Hotels, Atwell Suites or Garner Hotels is pretty much nil unless you are heading to the United States soon. Here is our review of EVEN Hotel New York Midtown East from 2018.

The offer kicks in for stays from 1st October but you can register today.
