The Japan Airlines A350 flies to London from this month

Back in autumn 2023, Japan Airlines unveiled the interiors of its new intercontinental flagship aircraft. Thirteen A350-1000s will gradually replace JAL’s existing Boeing 777 fleet and will arrive with new seats in all four cabins, from First Class to Economy.

They look impressive. You can see my full article here which delves into more detail. The aircraft will have six First Class suites, 54 Business Class suites, 24 Premium Economy seats and 155 seats in Economy.

First Class moves to a 1-1-1 layout, with extra wide seats:

Whilst in Business, JAL is adopting Safran’s unity seat in a staggered formation:

More fascinating, however, is the “introduction of the world’s first headphone-free stereo with built-in headrest speakers, allowing customers to enjoy the inflight entertainment system without using headphones.”

I believe JAL is the first airline to offer this technology, and I can’t wait to see how well it works on board.

New York was given as the first destination to receive the aircraft, followed by Dallas.

As previously reported, London is to be the third destination to get these new planes and JAL has now updated its schedules to reflect the new service, starting on 24th October.

Japan Airlines currently flies between London and Tokyo twice a day; the new plane will now operate one of these flights every other day. In effect, that means 25% of JAL’s London flights will be on the A350-1000. In terms of times:

  • JL44 departs London Heathrow at 19:20 and arrives in Tokyo Haneda at 17:20 the following day (night flight)
  • JL43 departs Tokyo Haneda at 09:50 and arrives at London Heathrow at 15:15 the same day (day flight)

At the moment, it looks like even-numbered days will see the A350-1000, although as always there could be last-minute swaps.

Japan Airlines is part of the oneworld alliance which means you’ll be able to redeem Avios for these cabins as well as earn Avios and British Airways Executive Club tier points when you pay cash.

  • Domo1915 says:

See there’s a Hyatt offer on Amex plat too. Is there a way to pre pay for room with Hyatt? Have a booking next year and it seems to just reserve a room and not let you pay for the room in advance.

    • BSI1978 says:

Having recently cancelled Amex Plat, this is annoying to read, particularly as Hyatt Amex offers seemed to have been withdrawn this year.

As to your question, Hyatt non-refundable prices should be taken immediately, albeit it is often up to the hotel as to when they actually process the payment/deposit. I’ve had many not so this until a few days before the trip.

      • Kevin C says:

The Hyatt offer is not exclusive to Plat. I got it on the BA card. So the offer might be on a different card or turn up in a day or two.

    • BBbetter says:

Call the hotel and ask them to process the payment.

  • MikeHi says:

Any idea on the avios cost of a J flight London to Tokyo on JAL?

  • Paul says:

Recently flew JAL business on a 787, it was the most uncomfortable biz seat I’ve ever been on.

    • meta says:

I found it the most comfortable seat. Better than QSuite and Club Suite.

    • Phillip says:

Assuming you’re referring to the international business (Apex), I agree with meta, one of my favourites. If it’s the SkySuite then it’s your average reverse herringbone. If it’s the domestic, well, it’s just that. Shorthaul business. It depends which 787 you flew.

    • Willmo says:

JAL have some high-density lie-flat 787s they use to on short-haul routes like Tokyo like Seoul, and less premium long-haul routes like Osaka to the US.

Suffice to say their ‘premium’ wide-body planes have the Apex suite, which I would consider to be some of the best business class seats there are.

  • Dubious says:

RE: JAL “introduction of the world’s first headphone-free stereo with built-in headrest speakers

    That sounds interesting.
I wonder if that replaces the overhead speakers. I suspect it less of an issue on JAL, but could be annoying on those airlines that like to play forced/mandatory adverts to their passengers after boarding. I get around these by wearing my headphones (disconnected) from the IFE and listening to a podcast but if the speakers are right next to your ears it my tactic might be less effective.

  • Paul says:

I think there is more chance of hell freezing over than there being Avios availability on the JAL A350 in the coming months. It’s unlikely JAL will need too and BA won’t want them too!

  • Tim Jackson says:

I think the JAL 43 route from HND to LHR is actually scheduled ‘every other day’ which in practice means even numbered days this month and odd numbered days in November. We are booked to fly back from Tokyo on 16 November and I got very excited until I remembered that October has 31 days. It is showing as a 773 on their website whereas the day before it shows as A350

    • Pogonation says:

If it makes you feel any better, JAL only updates the schedules once it has confirmed and received the new aircraft. They updated the schedules (to every other day) once they received the latest airframe on 2nd October. The next airframe has already completed its customer acceptance flight and is expected to be delivered within the next 2 weeks. I would expect the schedule to be updated to daily once this aircraft is delivered. So you still have a very realistic chance of your November 16th flight being switched to an A350.

  • Malcolm says:

The Aspire Lounge at Gate 4 is always quiet when I go so not surprising it’s going but (despite the offering not being up to much) was always a nice little oasis of calm in the mayhem that is Edinburgh Airport.

    • Colin_Thames says:

The gate 4 Aspire Lounge was definitely the worst of the three paid for lounges at EDI, but also the oldest to be fair. It reminded me of an upmarket motorway service station, but in the days before pre-booking came in, it was often the only one taking guests. And the other two, by gate 13, are a fair old schlep to gates 1-8. It’ll be interesting to see what they can do with the space, which feels fairly restricted.

  • John G says:

Booked on JL43 in May. Still showing as a 77W but I expect all days will be the A350 by then as they take more deliveries.
