The new ba.com website is rolling out

Back in March, British Airways announced it was rolling out an upgraded and updated ba.com.
I’m sure anyone who has used the website or the app in recent months knows why, as all too often even basic tasks such as checking in can be a struggle.
Part of the problem, according to CEO Sean Doyle, is that parts of the BA website date back to the year 2000 and are in dire need of a ground-up rewrite.
As such, the new website isn’t just a re-skin of the existing one but a complete overhaul, including many of BA’s back-end IT processes. Overall, BA is spending £750 million on upgrading the IT infrastructure across its entire operation, including the website.
On the website, the goal is to increase self-service functionality to the point that you will be able to do most things yourself, rather than having to call up. This includes making changes during times of disruption, with the new system able to offer you alternative flights on other airlines should yours be cancelled.
Whilst the new look has been in beta testing on certain routes, it now appears to be rolling out more widely and I was surprised to find myself redirected to it when I was on ba.com this week. If you don’t have it, and are curious to see what it looks like, this link will take you there.
BA told us that the rollout would start by the end of the year, but as anyone with access to the new site will know, some processes are still diverted to the old one. The ‘My Executive Club’ section, for example, is still a little clunky.
(Frankly, there is clearly still some way to go. You can’t see the booking boxes without having to scroll down which is terrible UX. Even HfP has strict rules about what should appear ‘above the fold’ and it doesn’t instil a lot of confidence.)
An improved app is also expected to follow, albeit I don’t think this is due until 2025.
