Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

NEW: Spend your Avios on duty free shopping at Heathrow

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

You can now redeem Avios on duty free shopping at London Heathrow. I’m not saying that you will want to, when you see the details, but the option is now there.

You may not have heard of Club Avolta, but its previous name – Red By Dufry – probably rings a bell.

For a start, 1,800 HfP readers took part in a Red By Dufry status match earlier in the year. This allowed them to match their British Airways or hotel status to top tier in Red By Dufry.

(If you did this, there is some exciting news coming. Club Avolta will soon launch a Radisson Rewards status match, with top tier Club Avolta status getting top tier Radisson Rewards VIP status.)

Avolta (the renamed Dufry) is the company which runs the main duty free stores at Heathrow and many, many other airports across the UK and globally.

Back in November 2023, the Avolta-run shops at Heathrow launched a new partnership with Avios.

You earn 1 Avios for every £1 you spend in World Duty Free and other shops at Heathrow run by Avolta.

Even better, you will receive 250 bonus Avios with your first transaction after linking your Club Avolta account to your Avios account.

This is totally separate from the Heathrow Rewards loyalty scheme – which also earns Avios – and it appears that you can double up by earning in both programmes.

You can now SPEND Avios with Club Avolta too

Very quietly, Club Avolta has rolled out the ability to spend Avios in its Heathrow and Madrid stores.

It’s another innovative use of the Avios API which allows partners to link directly to your Avios account and add or remove points. It is how, for example, Uber can credit Avios from a ride within 30 seconds of you getting out of the car.

Because your Club Avolta account is already linked to your British Airways Executive Club account, you can see your Avios balance in the Club Avolta app and use it to create an e-voucher which can be immediately spent on duty free.

How does it work?

Download the Club Avolta app:

If you are not a member of Club Avolta (ex-Red By Dufry) you need to download the app to your phone.

Link your Avios account:

Once your account is set up, go to ‘Account’ and ‘Explore Partners’. You will be able to link your Avios and Club Avolta accounts on this page.

Going forward, you will earn 1 Avios per £1 spent at participating Heathrow and Madrid stores. There is a 250 Avios bonus for your first transaction after linking accounts.

Whilst I’m not covering it in detail here, you will also save 5% on purchases at Avolta outlets at Heathrow and in other airports globally. These include, in the UK, Aberdeen, Belfast City, Birmingham, Bournemouth, Bristol, Cardiff, East Midlands, Edinburgh, Exeter, Glasgow, Glasgow Prestwick, Humberside, Leeds Bradford, Liverpool John Lennon, London Gatwick, London Luton, London Southend, London Stansted, Manchester, Newcastle, Norwich, Southampton and Teesside. You do NOT earn Avios at these airports, however.

Order an e-voucher:

Once your Avios account is linked, you will see your points balance showing on the ‘Partners’ page.

Click on the BA logo and you will be taken to another page with a menu option marked ‘Add voucher’. (It would make more sense to say ‘Order a voucher’ but what do I know ….)

You select ‘Heathrow’ or ‘Madrid’ as the airport where you intend to shop. You can then select the value of voucher you want:

The voucher sits in the Club Avolta app and can be scanned whilst making your purchase.

Vouchers cannot be used for tobacco purchases.

Which Heathrow stores accept Club Avolta vouchers?

You can’t use these vouchers at every retailer in Heathrow. They are only valid at:

Terminal 2

  • World Duty Free (three branches)

Terminal 3

  • World Duty Free (two branches)
  • Haute Perfumerie
  • World of Whiskies
  • Jo Malone
  • Sunglasses Boutique
  • Glorious Britain

Terminal 4

  • World Duty Free (three branches)
  • Glorious Britain
  • Jo Malone / Tom Ford

Is using Avios for duty free a good deal?

Not really.

You are getting 0.5p per Avios.

This is the same rate you get if you redeem Avios for Nectar points or for many other non-flight items.

Regular HfP readers will know that we target 1p+ when redeeming your Avios for premium cabin flights. This article (click) is our core ‘what is an Avios worth?’ piece.

However, if you are determined not to use your Avios for premium cabin flights, redeeming them for 0.5p each via Club Avolta is no worse than your alternatives.

Irrespective of the redemption value, anyone who shops in the Heathrow outlets listed above should join Club Avolta. You’ll earn 250 bonus Avios with your first purchase after linking your British Airways Executive Club account and will earn 1 Avios per £1 spent going forward.

  • PeterK says:

Platinum members get a 10% discount on Dufry purchases at all airports they operate.

    • numpty says:

Yes, used at Duty Free in Madrid a few weeks ago – very straight forward, just scan barcode, and even works at the self scan checkouts.

      • Alex Sm says:

I got so confused earlier this month! Tried to use my RedDufry barcode as usual at LHR T2, they said they are no longer accepting it, they are now Club Avolta. But they didn’t tell me it’s the same thing actually. So I managed to get points credited retrospectively but never got that 10% discount credited back 😭

    • Londonsteve says:

If you do click and collect online on the World Duty Free site at Heathrow you get the same 10% discount but available to all. I suppose Platinum is more flexible as it enables impulse purchases with the same discount.

  • meta says:

You can also stack the discount with Heathrow Rewards and triple dip.

  • BJ says:

“You can now redeem Avios on duty free shipping”

That would certainly be novel 🙂

  • sturgeon says:

It’s not the greatest use of Avios but decent enough when you get slightly reduced prices at duty free and then add the 10% platinum discount. There’s no point to earning additional ‘club Avolta’ points once you’re platinum though, right? The points don’t seem redeemable for anything bar hitting spend targets to unlock tiers.

Incidentally I’ve just checked Heathrow rewards as I have an old account but the password reset produces no email. I then signed up using another email and successfully set it up but can’t log in as it asks for a card number I don’t have?

    • Alan says:

Yeah I had similar issue when trying to sign into the wifi at T5 this month.

    • DeB2020 says:

Been having this issue since 2021, they can’t resolve it at Heathrow customer services. They say it is a problem with my email.

Got myself a second (new) card and it works fine with the Heathrow app.

      • Camflyer says:

Same — I lost the password to my legacy account during Covid, and the password reset emails never arrived. I assumed the points had expired during Covid and set up a new account.

  • dsm83 says:

Already signed up to BA but it seems like I can also link my Iberia account to benefit from the 250 avios.

    • Rob says:

Yes, it also crossed my mind that this might work ….

      • daveinitalia says:

They may have closed this loophole but it certainly used to be the case you could get the welcome Avios twice

  • Colin says:

Got my 250 Avios bonus with spend at Tenerife South

  • Alan says:

Sorry but I have say just writing off economy bookings with Avios as the same as 0.5p use is not fair. An example:

Booking for Lanzarote out 29June 25 return 11 Jul 25

    Cash £227.38
    Avios 30,500 + £1 (7.4ppp) or 21,500 + £35 (8.9ppp)

Cash price is cheapest flight routing (direct) but economy plus so direct baggage comparison

I also will accept this is one example and shall we call it long short haul. I will also acknowledge that ‘best value’ is business class long haul when you want to use a pence per point valuation basis. But economy you are not far short of getting 2 returns for the business class of above example.

    • Rob says:

It absolutely can work on some routes at peak periods, there is no doubt of that. Even long haul economy made sense when post-covid price increases were at their peak.

      • Mark says:

Even outside of peak periods on short haul you can very often get >1p/Avios value. The trick is to go for the lower Avios, higher cash options.

E.g. off-peak economy return to Rome – outbound Tue 11th March, inbound Tue 18th March:

        Highest cash Avios redemption: 5,800+£90

Cheapest BA Economy Plus (with checked baggage): £187. Avios value: 1.67p each (at that ignores that the redemption is refundable).

Even the minimum HBO cash fare on that day is £167, so 1.33p/Avios.

    • louie says:

Not sure of your figures. I make the Avios calculations 0.74ppA and 0.89ppA respectively, less than Rob’s 1ppA.

      • Mark says:

Agreed for @Alan’s figures. A better valuation comes from the 9500+£135 option for 0.97p/Avios but still just less than 1p/Avios in that example.

  • daveinitalia says:

“Dufry is the company which runs the main duty free stores at Heathrow”

You mean Avolta, hence the change of name of the app 😀

Dufry changed its name to Avolta after acquiring the Italian Autogrill (the Club Avolta app now gives you 5% off in their service stations in Italy) – Autogrill also owned a lot of airport catering companies like HMS Hist which runs almost every catering outlet at Schiphol and many in the US. So now the app also works for discounts in these catering outlets.
