Qatar Airways has a ‘Qsuite Guarantee’! Swap for free if your aircraft changes

Three months ago I wrote an article about why Virgin Atlantic should have a ‘suite guarantee’. The background was that a New York trip I had booked on the A330neo – Virgin’s best Upper Class seat – had been swapped to a Boeing 787 with Virgin’s (and indeed the Atlantic’s) worst business class seat.

Readers had told me that they no longer booked Virgin Atlantic in Upper Class because aircraft swaps were too common. I thought a ‘suite guarantee’ (free rebooking if your A350 or A330neo flight was moved to a Boeing 787 or A330) was the answer.

It turns out that Qatar Airways beat me to it.

The ‘Qsuite Guarantee’ is semi-mythical

If you google ‘Qsuite Guarantee’ you won’t find any definite proof that it exists.

It doesn’t seem be to mentioned on the Qatar Airways website and I can’t find an article on any site where the writer was offered it directly.

All I could find online was this 2019 tweet from the airline, which was quoted in another article which had tried (and failed) to find proof that the guarantee still existed:

Last week, however, I got this email out of the blue from a reader:

“On another note, I assume you’re already aware that Qatar has a Qsuite Guarantee. It allows a free flight change (within 21 days of the original flight) when it does an aircraft swap from a Qsuite plane to a non-Qsuite plane.

Qatar emailed me a week before my return flight mentioning the aircraft swap to a non-Qsuite & offering the flight change. I’ve not heard of such a scheme on any other airline.

Even though I did an Avios redemption originally and there was no reward availability in the 21 day window, they still allowed me to change flights to one with no reward availability.

This was useful as the aircraft for the original flight was changed to an old 777 with a 2-2-2 layout in business.”

The guarantee was tucked away at the very bottom of the email the reader received about his aircraft change:

“You can also enjoy one complimentary flight change if you wish to fly in Qsuite on a different date. To benefit from this option, please contact us.”

The guarantee terms are unchanged

It turns out that the terms of the guaranteed are the same as the 2019 tweet I quoted above:

  • you can change your travel date +/- 21 days to move to a Qsuite aircraft
  • the first change is absolutely free, but any further changes would result in the normal fees
  • if you have an Avios ticket, there does not need to be reward availability to change

The only ‘fact’ that our reader didn’t verify was whether the ‘swap to another departure point in the same country or within 500 miles’ part of the guarantee still stands. Given where he was, flying back to the UK, it wasn’t relevant to him.

(EDIT: the comments below suggest that the ‘swap to any airport within 500 miles’ part of the guarantee is no longer available. You can only swap to another flight from the same airport.)

So, the ‘Qsuite Guarantee’ exists!

It’s not perfect, obviously. If Qatar Airways makes a permanent equipment swap on a route to a non-Qsuite aircraft type, and there are no alternative airports you can reach (and the transfer would be at your cost) then you’re stuck.

For anyone caught by a one-off aircraft swap, however, the ‘Qsuite Guarantee’ will see you right. Kudos to Qatar Airways for quietly offering this benefit for at least the last five years and without even making a song and dance about it.

How about it, Virgin Atlantic?

I’m surprised they would be willing to exchange an avios ticket for a flight with no reward availability. They moved a gatwick flight of mine last year from 3pm to 9am and flatly refused to change it to a LHR flight when there were 2 about the same time due to lack of availability

  • paul says:

Any airline can do what they want with a ticket at the airport. Once the operation takes control anything goes. However it needs staff who are empowered, trained and confident that they are working in line with policies.
The policy from QR almost certainly will not apply to a redemption booking if trying to do this in advance unless there is reward availability, and the fact you cannot see it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. The problem with QR is that most staff are simply terrified of getting anything wrong, so unless redemptions are specifically named in the policy you can whistle.

    • Lumma says:

How could you do it in advance? You’d need to book a Qsuite flight and then for it to be changed to a non Qsuite flight for it to be applied

  • Voldemort says:

Just to add some points as I have availed of this several times over the year, including when it was more generous. It applies to QR issued tickets only (so NOT BA tickets), the 500 mile (or same country) rule was removed some time around early 2022. Finally it really helps to have the email offer from QR to change flights, otherwise the agent will need to contact the back office and it isn’t an immediate response. It would be worth reaching out to your contact at QR to see what the current iteration of the policy is as it is somewhat shrouded in mystery.

This only came about because of youtuber nonstopdan

  • David O'Donovan says:

    Hi Rob,
The change of departure airport within 500 miles is no more part of the policy, it must be from and too the same aiport. If all the QSUITE flights are swapped out from destination A to B, then your out of luck.

I flew from FRA – DOHA – CAPE Town on 23rd october to 18th of November. Original flight was on 4th of November, but lucky found the one remaining QSUITE flight +- 21 days between FRA and DOHA. If it was for that one flight i would have flown on the 787 business suite and the other leg on the old 2-2-2.

  • ChasP says:

Many of us have been annoyed for years that airlines can boast in adverts about their marvellous new plane/seat then put you on the old one.
Seems like a breach of advertising laws after you have been seduced to buy by the glossy ad
If Ford announces a new Mk 2 car then they reduce the price of the remaining mark 1s or at least the market does
i cant think of anywhere else where you don’t know if you will get the old or new version until you get it months after you paid for it.

    • Rob says:

Emirates was taken to court in New Zealand for advertising a business class seat which was never used to New Zealand.

  • Abdul says:

This definitely exists. I used it last year, initially called to complain but they offered a free change. Currently on a trip and the outbound was changed, called them and they changed it. Was a bit of a hassle as I had not received an email, seems the email is the trigger for the offer.

  • Michael says:

Following text from Online chat with QR –
Due to operational requirements, premium passengers booked on a flight equipped with QSuite may see their equipment change to a non-QSuite aircraft.
An email notification is sent to the affected passengers (excluding those with group bookings and OAL documents) offering one complimentary change. This change can be used for a new departure date +/-21 days from the original.
Rebooking should be done in to QSuite flights only.
Rebooking shall be made onto a QR-operating flight with a QSUITE aircraft from/to the same origin/destination .
