Is it worth buying IHG One Rewards points to retain your Diamond status?

If you have Diamond status with IHG One Rewards, you may have received an interesting offer yesterday.

(Or you may not – I know not all Diamond members did.)

IHG will sell you, at a higher-than-usual rate, IHG One Rewards points and they will qualify towards elite status.

If you have Diamond Elite status and did not receive an email yesterday, you can see if you have the offer by logging in on this page. Some readers have been successful with this but my wife was not.

Is it worth buying IHG points to retain status?

It’s not an easy question to answer.

For a start, IHG is giving different prices to different people.

There seem to be three versions:

  • 120,000 points (100% of what you need for Diamond) for $800 (£630)
  • 120,000 points for $1,000 (£787)
  • 120,000 points for $1,200 (£945)

Obviously these pro-rata down so you can buy the exact number you need to hit 120,000 based on what you have at the moment.

These are also redeemable points

The website for buying these special points (which I can’t link to, because everyone gets a personalised link) does not make it totally clear that these are also redeemable points.

However, if you read the terms and conditions, it seems that they are.

This changes the maths entirely. We value at IHG One Rewards point at 0.4p as you are very likely to get around that level when booking a redemption room.

This means that 120,000 points will get you £480 of future hotel stays. You can treat this as a pseudo-discount on what you are being asked to pay to retain status.

The three options now look like this, for a Diamond who hasn’t done a single cash stay all year and who has zero status points:

  • 120,000 points for $800 (£630) which gets you £480 of stays so you pay £150 for Diamond
  • 120,000 points for $1,000 (£787) which gets you £480 of stays so you pay £307 for Diamond
  • 120,000 points for $1,200 (£945) which gets you £480 of stays so you pay £465 for Diamond

There is now a MASSIVE difference between the value of the three offers.

Free breakfast should be the factor that swings it for you

The main firm benefit of IHG One Rewards Diamond status is free breakfast. You will get a 100% bonus on base points on cash stays and a decent but not guaranteed chance of an upgrade, but you can’t easily put a financial value on that.

Let’s look at two extreme examples.

  • If you did zero cash stays this year and have the most expensive $1,200 (£945) offer, you are paying £465 to retain Diamond. (You are actually paying £945 but receive points worth £480 in return plus the status.) I cannot see any value here at all. You’d need to do at least 12 nights for two people before you’d break-even on the breakfast savings.
  • On the other hand, imagine someone who already has 100,000 base points and received the offer of 120,000 points for $800 (£630). They would only need to buy 20,000 points to retain Diamond. I think you’d be crazy to say no on that basis.

To decide if this is for you, you need to work out:

  • how many elite qualifying points you need to buy
  • what rate is being offered and
  • what the net cost is after deducting the ‘redemption value’ of 0.4p per point

As a VERY rough rule of thumb, I would say:

  • if you have the ‘120,000 points for $800’ offer then it is worth consideration, irrespective of how many elite qualifying points you already have
  • if you have the ‘120,000 points for $1,000’ offer then think about it if you already have at least 50,000 elite qualifying points
  • if you have the ‘120,000 points for $1,200’ offer then I would ignore the offer unless you already have at least 80,000 elite qualifying points

This is only a guideline though. Someone with 10 IHG nights already booked for next year can put a guaranteed value on the free breakfasts, whilst someone with no planned bookings is taking a far bigger gamble.

My wife is Diamond but hasn’t had the offer (yet?). She has 4,999 elite qualifying points and one booked night at an InterContinental where we’ll be on the hook for £50, at a guess, for breakfast. If she got the $800 deal I would probably take it but I don’t see the maths working on the $1,000 or $1,200 options.

Received the offer yesterday for 120K @$1K.
Actually needed 4K points, but a one night business trip at a HIX plus 3K extra points for £15 got me over the line.
18 years of top tier consecutively now, madness!!

    • Nick says:

Similarly JJ, but beat you by 2 years! I needed just under 10K to keep Diamond for next year, and picked up 10K extra points for 2 X £19 a couple of weeks ago at an IC.

Mind you, to be honest, I wouldn’t be too fussed if Hilton came up with another ‘keeper’ for Diamond again for next year.

  • John says:

The price for lesser amounts of points is NOT pro-rated! So it’s a better deal for people who haven’t stayed at IHG at all…

The amounts you can buy are in multiples of 5000. A selection of the prices for me:
    120k – $1200
    100k – $1105
    80k – $990
    60k – $870
    30k – $665
    10k – $420
    5k – $300

Americans with the IHG credit card seem to have received an offer for a further 20% off, so $640 for 120k, but later reports say the discount has disappeared. My email also offers me 20% off (ex-creation cardholder I guess) but it’s not reflected in the displayed pricing.

    • Jeff says:

X2 on this important point. I only need 10,000 EQP to qualify for Diamond again this year (which I have covered by stays anyway). I was quoted $350 to purchase 10,000 EQP.

The offer is clearly weighted towards lapsed members who have pretty much left IHG this year as a way of enticing them back.

  • Rob H not Rob says:

    120k for $800 here.

I was going to let it lapse as I need 70k next year to retain, but this may swing it for me.

A couple of nights in the Carlton Cannes coming up so breakfast there covers it.

  • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

Not got an email and it’s not showing in my offers section.

Either they are spacing out sending the emails or they can see then when I checkout of my current stay I’ll qualify for diamond via the stay 10 nights get diamond offer.

  • The Paw 🐾 says:

Has anyone had recent experience with the unofficial extension of Diamond if you buy/renew Ambassador?

    • John says:

      IHG decided to end it

      • Retron says:

Yup, it’s gone – and that includes if you used the “once in a lifetime 6 months extension” offer too. That’s also gone, of course!

    • BA Flyer IHG Stayer says:

It ended over a year ago!

      You still get Plat though.

      • DJW says:

Does the Diamond status end when the Ambassador status ends (renewed April this year) or at the end of the calendar year for IHG?

        • Chas says:

Think it’s calendar year. My account page says that my Diamond status ends on 31 December, but I have until 1 Feb to renew ambassador.

        • John says:

Diamond is by calendar year (but tends to last a few days to weeks after the end)

Amb is 12 months from date of purchase

Not sure if plat from amb lasts the rest of the calendar year or ends when your amb ends

  • Claire f says:

Middle offer for me and I need 110000 points but I have a Christmas stay coming up which gets me 10000 of these (5000 paid points for 2 nights which are eligible provided they post in time). I have 7 nights booked at kimptons, ic and indigo already for next year so 14 breakfasts would leave me slightly ahead on this deal looking at prices . This would push me to put more stays via ihg but its not a slam dunk. Ihg status did get me rj golden sparrow this year which has been well worth it so keeping status leaves the opportunity there for further status matches, decisions decisions 🤔

    • John says:

It doesn’t matter if they “post in time”, they will still be credited towards the year in which the stay actually happened.

  • Bernie100 says:

15,000 points away. Received the offer. Doing Iberostar now for 7 days in Tenerife. So won’t need to buy. Status really acknowledged. Double upgrade to a Suite. Second year doing Iberostar , now feel they are more part of the IHG family.

    • strickers says:

How is the recognition at Iberostar? We will be at Sábila for 5 nights in Jan.

      • Bernie100 says:

We are at this hotel currently. Booked directly with Iberostar. One week before stay emailed the Hotel confirming my status and on checkin upgraded to a suite on the 6th Floor. Right next to Club lounge which is really well stocked. Also exclusive area by the pool. Enjoy your stay!!

    • @mkcol says:

We stayed in Iberostar Fuerteventura in April – status was thoroughly acknowledged then which has encouraged me to consider them again.

      • strickers says:

Thanks, I should get Star Prestige benefits I think which looks pretty decent.

  • Jonathan says:

I have a reward stay coming up, can anyone confirm we still get free breakfast on reward stays?

    Thanks
