Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Where can you fly on Iberia with your BA Amex 2-4-1 companion voucher?

One major Avios change that we’ve seen in the last two years was the opening up of Aer Lingus and Iberia Avios flights for American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher redemptions. Full details are here.

I am off to Boston today to check out Iberia’s new A321XLR business class product. Keep an eye on HfP in a couple of weeks for that review.

As a prelude to those pieces, I want to show you where you can fly on Iberia using your British Airways American Express 2-4-1 companion voucher. It is a follow-up to our December article on where you can fly on Aer Lingus long haul.

where does iberia fly?

Where does Iberia fly long-haul?

I want to use this article to look at the Iberia route network. It is NOT an article discussing the costs, in Avios and taxes, of Iberia redemptions.

For Summer 2025, these are the routes that will be operated (E&OE – we had to put this list together ourselves):

From Madrid to the US and Mexico:

  • Madrid – Boston
  • Madrid – Chicago
  • Madrid – Dallas Fort Worth
  • Madrid – Los Angeles
  • Madrid – Miami
  • Madrid – Mexico City
  • Madrid – New York JFK
  • Madrid – San Francisco
  • Madrid – Washington DC

From Madrid to Central and South America and the Caribbean:

  • Madrid – Bogota
  • Madrid – Buenos Aires
  • Madrid – Caracas
  • Madrid – Guatemala City
  • Madrid – Guayaquil
  • Madrid – Havana
  • Madrid – Lima
  • Madrid – Montevideo
  • Madrid – Panama City
  • Madrid – Quitox
  • Madrid – Rio de Janeiro
  • Madrid – San Jose (Costa Rica)
  • Madrid – San Juan (Puerto Rico)
  • Madrid – San Salvador
  • Madrid – Santiago de Chile
  • Madrid – Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic)
  • Madrid – Sao Paulo

From Madrid to Africa and the Middle East:

  • Madrid – Doha
  • Madrid – Cairo (A321 short haul aircraft)
  • Madrid – Dakar (check aircraft type – could be short-haul)
  • Madrid – Tel Aviv (check aircraft type – could be short-haul)

From Madrid to Asia:

  • Madrid – Tokyo

As you can see, Iberia has a very strong presence to the Americas. It opens up a lot of potential 2-4-1 voucher redemptions to cities such as Lima, Quito or Guayaquil which British Airways does not operate.

Where does Iberia fly?

How do you connect to Iberia flights from the UK?

Both British Airways and Iberia have a good range of connections to Madrid from across the UK. There are usually more than 10 daily flights from London alone.

If you are looking for Avios seats I would initially search for the long-haul flight on its own and then see what connections can be added later. You don’t want to risk not seeing long-haul availability simply because the most convenient short-haul connecting flight isn’t available.

You will make a substantial saving by booking your UK-Madrid flight on a separate ticket, as this avoids long haul Air Passenger Duty. The downside is that your baggage may not be checked through and Iberia is not obliged to help you if you miss your connection.

Iberia and Iberia Express UK route network to Madrid:

  • London Heathrow
  • London Gatwick
  • Manchester
  • Edinburgh

Some of these may be seasonal.

Don’t forget that, for cargo reasons, Iberia normally operates a long haul aircraft on at least one daily Heathrow flight. You can enjoy the pleasures of a ‘proper’ lie-flat business class seat on the two and a half hour flight to Madrid.

How to use your American Express companion voucher on Iberia flights

Booking an Iberia flight using an Amex companion voucher is exactly the same process as if you were booking a British Airways flight, as it needs to be done from your British Airways Club account.

This can be a problem if you want to book the ‘guaranteed’ Avios seats. Club Iberia Plus members can book seats from 360 days prior to departure (and so can you if you transfer Avios to Club Iberia Plus and book there) but British Airways only allows booking from 355 days before departure.

Make sure you are logged in at ba.com and then select ‘Book a flight with Avios’. You then need to tick the box to use your 2-4-1 companion voucher when entering your preferred destination and dates.

Remember that pricing will be driven by Iberia’s peak and off-peak calendar, even though you are booking on the British Airways website, which doesn’t always match BA’s peak and off-peak dates. It will also use Iberia’s pricing chart which normally matches BA but includes some bargains, such as 68,000 Avios return in Business Class from Madrid to New York off-peak.

Using a 2-4-1 voucher, two people can fly from Madrid to New York or Boston in Business Class, off peak, return, for just 68,000 Avios and (for two people) £430 in total. Yes, the taxes and charges are just £215 per person return. You can’t complain about that ….

  • Stuart says:

Thanks to an earlier HfP post about companion vouchers on Iberia, I booked to go MAD-LIM-MAD this coming September, then called up BA and added MAD-LHR to the booking so it’s all on one ticket. The total for two passengers in Business/Club was 125,000 Avios + £481.20 + comp voucher.

Then I got the LHR-MAD leg separately using Avios.

    • Ray says:

When you say you called BA and added MAD-LHR to the booking did this cost extra Avios or cash?

      • Stuart says:

It was 20,000 Avios and £74 to add on MAD-LHR in Club Europe. That’s included in the original total.

  • Rodrigo says:

Hi. Do you know if the Iberia reward flights are also released at midnight UK time in the BA site? Does BA share the same number of available Avoios seats with Iberia or they have separate allocations? My concern is that if the seats get released first to Iberia users at midnight in Spain and they appear in BA an hour later (due to time difference), then those booking with BA with companion vouchers won’t have access to those seats in high demand.

    • Rob says:

It’s worse than that. Iberia works on 360 days but BA is 355 days. The Spanish have 5 days advantage over you.

      • David says:

Spot on – Perhaps Hfp could tell us if there is a work around?

        • David says:

The obvious thing to do is for BA to show Iberia availability as it becomes available. However, I assume that is beyond BA’s IT capabilities (as it is with most things).

          • PeterK says:

BA’s contract with Amadeus is a -355 release, my understanding is that BA could adopt -360 to match IB, AY etc but it chooses not to. Perhaps there are some legacy BA systems in the background that can’t cope with -360?

        • JDB says:

You can call BA to book the seats at T-360 even when you can’t do this online. If not using a voucher, you can book directly with Iberia.

          • AnnaB says:

Yes can book with iberia but need to set up an account i think is 90 days before you can transfer avios over from BA plus have to do some avios activity I just did an avios survey? Also make sure you complete all the personal information on iberia plus including passport as doesn’t work other wise to spend avios. Maybe is something else I am missing.

          • Alasdair says:

I’ve just called to book an Iberia flight at T-360 and was told that BA reps do not have visibility of availability until T-355.

          • Rob says:

            Correct

      • The Original Nick. says:

I’m not Spanish but I have 5 days advantage over BA.

      • Alasdair says:

Thank you Rob for confirming that BA call centres do not have access to Iberia availability until T-355.
Is it also true that if (using Companion Voucher) you fly out Iberia and back BA, open jaw, that you are charged substantially more Avios than individual legs for some reason? (Mixed Carrier Chart or something!!!???) Thanks

        • Rob says:

          Not sure.

For clarity BA doesn’t have access to any inventory until 355 – it’s a bigger problem with Qatar Airways availability.

On the upside American Airlines is 331 so you don’t have the US people fighting over BA seats.

  • Johnny Tabasco says:

Apologies if covered and I missed it – can you book a 241 on a return journey leg on Iberia arriving into Madrid, or do the 241 flights have to depart from Madrid?

  • jannis says:

I only paid 80 quid of tax flying from madrid to São Paulo using the voucher.

  • Michelle says:

Just need them to extend this to Barclays cabin upgrade voucher now!

  • Goran says:

Has anybody tried to book Havana flights on BA using 2 for 1 voucher? BA website just doesn’t seems to recognise HAV or Havana entries? Any suggestions? Thanks

    • The Original Nick. says:

I had no problem booking and flying in February 2020 using a 2-4-1.

    • NorthernLass says:

I think I read once that you have to type in the whole city name, though it sounds like you’ve tried that.

      • NorthernLass says:

But also make sure you know about future ESTA implications first. I imagine this is not going to change under the new regime!

        • Goran says:

Thanks NorthernLass for reminder about visas…. the new regime will only make it worse, more than likely.

          • Londonsteve says:

Although Biden has just removed Cuba from the ‘state sponsors of terror’ list as a parting gift, although how long it will remain like this is anyone’s guess. I guess Donny doesn’t want anyone visiting the US visa free that has been recently tanning on a Varadero beach.

    • The Original Nick. says:

Type in the whole city name.

      • Goran says:

Thanks Nick, tried both HAV and the whole city name, Havana, but no luck. Flights are available on Iberia web site and sky scanner, but BA just doesn’t city/airport name/code. Will try again tomorrow.

  • Tom says:

Is there a site where you can check Iberia Avios availability?

  • Karen says:

I have used my companion voucher to book LHR to Tokyo one way in May. There is no availability for return flights to LHR so was planning to book the return Tokyo to Madrid. Iberia website is showing at least 4 economy seats on 27 May but when I call up BA they cannot see these seats on their system. I asked if I could book them myself then call up and link to my companion voucher but they said they could only do that with flights booked on the BA portal. Is this correct? Any advice how to do this would be much appreciated as reading other threads led me to believe availability should be same on BA and Iberia.

    • JDB says:

BA is correct that they can only refund a booking made on their own website. Iberia has some extra economy availability on its own app/website like Blue class that can’t be accessed via any other partner.
