Decent Virgin Atlantic Premium reward availability to Toronto in April / May

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

HfP readers, and indeed HfP writers, have been generally scathing about the introduction of dynamic reward pricing at Virgin Atlantic.

It has, to all intents and purposes, killed off your chances of getting a return Upper Class reward flight unless you want to go to India. Even routes with decent Upper Class availability on day flights have very little on overnight legs.

The new Toronto route, however, has decent availability in Premium which may be worth a look.

Virgin Atlantic Toronto flights on points

Virgin Atlantic starts flights to Toronto at the end of March. At present, there is good Premium pricing for April and May.

There are also a lot of well priced Upper Class seats on the day flight out during April and May, with some as low as 29,000 Virgin Points. You are stuffed if you want a sensibly priced Upper Class seat on the overnight return flight though. You are also stuffed if you want an Upper Class outbound flight any later in the year.

Here is April outbound:

Virgin Points

…. and April inbound:

Virgin Points

May outbound:

Virgin Points

…. and May inbound:

Virgin Points

So, a quick summary:

  • Upper Class (day) out, Premium (overnight) back = good deals
  • Premium (day) out, Premium (overnight) back = good deals
  • Premium (day) out, Upper (overnight) back = bad deals
  • Upper (day) out, Upper (overnight) back = bad deals

Don’t forget that Virgin Atlantic now reduces its carrier surcharges when the number of points reduces.

A Premium redemption at 10,500 Virgin Points each way – which isn’t hard to find during April and May – will cost:

…. £442 in taxes and charges. If you can cope with the overnight return flight it’s not a bad deal compared to a cash price of £872 in this example.

In terms of timing, VS147 departs Heathrow at 17:10 and arrives in Toronto Pearson Airport at 20:30 the same day. VS148 departs Toronto at 22:20 and lands into Heathrow at 10:30 the following morning.

PS. Virgin Atlantic has a page on its website called ‘Reward Seat Deals’. This automatically shows the best deals that flyers have found over the last 24 hours.

This is what it displayed at 9pm last night for Upper Class ‘Reward Seat Deals’:

Virgin Atlantic Upper Class deals

If those are the best deals booked in the last 24 hours, Virgin Flying Club is in more trouble than we think.

USA is sold out in UC in next few months especially getting back to UK – there are a few spots which have 57,500 one way but rare – I had to cancel a UC redemption for 90k miles – to rebook 99% of UC flights are a whopping 350,000 points now – not had good experiences in PE personally…Atlanta for example used to have good selection (like BA) for redemptions a few months out – Now – nothing much in UC – appreciate the thrust of this is about PE and a new route but the dynamic pricing even on that is patchy and like the USA routes – the redemption prices have in some cases nearly quadrupled – Agreed there are some good bits but generally USA is off the end of the scale looking out from now and summer – perhaps the late Easter has some small affect to as its bumps into Bank holiday weeks in June, early USA school breaks in June….but it looks chock – a – block and pricey (very)

  • BJ says:

I only have about 2000 points left now but still have a voucher. Anyone have any thoughts on how best to use voucher in these circumstance? Best just to forget the points and use voucher as 2for1 or to upgrade cadh flights or best to buy points and use it in conjunction with a reward flight? Both my partner and I have our Birthday in May so a week to London and Toronto might be good idea.

    • Rob says:

I think (and its not 100% clear) that if you bought a cash flight and the equivalent points flight was under 75k then you could pay the entire cost with the voucher (taxes etc still due) for the 2nd person.

    • FREEFLIGHTS says:

I have just asked that same question in the forums. I have even asked Virgin “voucher customer services” and they were unsure on what happens.

    • BJ says:

Thanks, this is exactly what I was wondering but couldn’t quite get my head around it. Sounds like it’s one for the call centre with credit card in hand to see what they’ll do when an imminent booking is their’s for the taking.

    • Throwawayname says:

Upgrading probably is the way to go, as you can move two classes up and the taxes and charges on the saver flights aren’t as brutal as they used to be. I’m hoping to use my Oct ’23 voucher for a trip to Sri Lanka (CMB is barely a couple of hours away from BOM, and Indian visas are pretty straightforward to obtain nowadays).

    • mena says:

why dont you buy from Virgin thepoints ?

      • BJ says:

Considering it. Virgin is not my scheme so I need to read the university series article on the voucher again. I was hoping to use points and voucher to South Africa at Easter when they released loads of seats but codn’t get hd of my partner at the time to ok it. Eventually used them on KLM back from BKK (not a great deal) so I’m now trying to find something that’ll work with voucher under new rules. However, I won’t do so just for the sake of it.

        • Throwawayname says:

The vouchers can be used for two class upgrades, the only advantage of those with status is they’re able to cover 150k with them as opposed to 75k.

          • BJ says:

Oh ok, thinking about it I now recall it was x1.5 or something to upgrade to UC without status. I’ll spend some time today rereading Virgin University series.

    • JPK says:

Wait for Christmas and get a wine advent calendar

      • BJ says:

I don’t think 2000 points will go that far and surely the 75k value of my vouvher can only be used against flights?

  • GMT says:

I’m gold with Virgin and managed to book a return in UC for LHR>JFK in April a couple of weeks ago for 152k using the voucher plus 2k from FC my account. It was the third time I called the call centre in 2 weeks and had 3 different rules of how I could and couldn’t use the voucher from each representative. The third person was excellent and looked at all the best permutations for minimum miles to get the lowest redemption and basically only using the voucher (all bar 2k). Its not a slick process though but fortunately got what I needed. The same flights VS3 & VS4 on the same dates are now well over 250k miles.

  • BJ says:

I had used some on CDG-BCN, they’re good value for stuff like this if you want flexibility or to try booking at short notice.

    • Throwawayname says:

They aren’t that flexible, the change fee is $75 or something. But they’re great for last minute bookings.

      • BJ says:

I didn’t think the fee was that high but when I cancelled one they never charged it anyway.

  • Whitworth says:

It was a lot easier to get oasis tickets in Toronto , so we got some and booked a BA 241 club flight for August bank holiday . Can’t wait

    • Ben says:

Good for you, but it feels like flying long-haul to see a British band play is the kind of thing that future generations will look back on with utter horror.
