The North Island resort (€9,000+ per night) leaves Marriott Bonvoy

You may have heard of North Island Resort in the Seychelles.

If the name rings a bell, it is because it is where Prince William went on honeymoon, as did George and Amal Clooney.  It is situated 30km from Mahe Island, the capital of the Seychelles.

North Island Resort has a grand total of 11 rooms across its 500 acres. An image is below.

North Island resort leaves Marriott Bonvoy

‘Rooms’ is perhaps understating it, however.  The 11 villas are 450 sq m, so about 6x the size of the average new-build UK house.

If you want to read a review, my friend and occasional HfP commentator Tom has been a couple of times.  He reviewed it on his site – which is probably the world’s biggest source of private island reviews – here.

In 2020, weirdly, ASMALLWORLD – which took over management of the resort – decided to add North Island to ‘The Luxury Collection’, one of Marriott’s brands.  It became bookable on Marriott Bonvoy points!

Don’t rush to book though.  The cost of a random stay in May comes out at 443,000 points per night.

That said, it’s a good deal compared to the cash rate of €8,720 per night including taxes. This is for an entry level one bedroom villa. You need to factor in a helicopter transfer from Mahe on top.

You’re actually getting 1.6p per Marriott Bonvoy point, which is triple our standard valuation of 0.5p, so it’s a decent deal if you are planning to visit anyway ….

This is all coming to an end. Oddly, selling rooms for €9,000+ per night via marriott.com doesn’t seem to have been a huge success and the partnership will end on 30th June.

Jump in now if you want to get a redemption in ….

I’m not the target market for North Island but the review is at least amusing and worth a read (where most travel reviews are very flat) …

The only silver lining here is that the North Island redemption rates make the fifth-night free a considerable saving…

This development made me have a look at the other Marriott options in the Seychelles, and as it turns out, it’s now slim pickings. There appears to be just one property left…

I will always have a soft spot for the Seychelles as we honeymooned there ourselves 13 years ago, and stayed in what was my first SPG-branded property called Fisherman’s Cove (which deflagged as a Le Meridien about a year after the Marriott takeover). That kick-started the entire point collecting game for me. It’s literally where it all began.

An Etihad error fare plus a good value stay on Hilton points, made the Seychelles a big step in my road to being a points addict! What a wonderful part of the world.

  • Jimbob says:

Personally I found the NI hotel far too cheap for a holiday. I mean who isn’t paying €9k a day on their car fleet payments for their butlers & serveants anyhow ?

  • AL says:

Used to fly in and out of SEN on a reasonably regular basis on Flybe. Great airport as far as efficiency goes, but absolutely nothing to do (or there wasn’t back in 2017, when I last visited!), so only plan to spend the shortest possible amount of time there!
