British Airways appears to have extended elite status for some people who were due to lose it part-way through the 1st April 2025 to 31st March 2026 membership year.

This includes my wife and I which is good news if it sticks.

Let’s take a closer look.

British Airways extends status

Back in February 2024, when British Airways announced the moved to fixed membership years (1st April to 31st March), some people were NOT given a 31st March end date for their current status.

This was done out of fairness to those who had just earned status. It wasn’t perfect but it helped.

Here’s an example:

  • Imagine that you earned Gold during a membership year which ended on 8th October 2024
  • Your Gold status was due to expire on 30th November 2025
  • When the new membership year system was announced, it was assumed that this Gold period would be shortened with status ending on 30th April 2025

A few days after the original announcement, BA changed its T&C to clarify that:

Any existing status valid beyond 31 March 2025 will continue for the full duration.

This meant that everyone would get the ‘rest of their current year plus the full following year’ to benefit from their status.

It wasn’t the perfect solution. Your ‘soft landing’ period was still reduced. In the example above, even though British Airways allowed you to keep your Gold status until 30th November 2025, your soft landing to Silver – assuming you didn’t requalify, and assuming soft landings continue – would only last until 30th April 2026 and not 30th November 2026.

What has changed?

Both my wife and I were impacted by this.

My status was due to end on 30th November 2025. My wife’s was due to end on 30th September 2025.

However, looking at my British Airways Club membership card:

…. my Gold status will now run to 30th April 2026. My wife’s account shows the same. I’ve gained an extra five months, she has gained an extra seven months.

British Airways seems to have decided that dropping some members down a tier during the new fixed membership period doesn’t make sense.

If your British Airways Club status was due to expire mid-year, take a look at your BA account. You may be pleasantly surprised. However, looking at the comments below, it seems 50/50 as to whether you were extended.

    My wife’s account still shows Sep-25 expiry in the app but logging on via BA.com it now shows a Mar-26 expiry. My expiry shows Mar-26 in both the app and on BA.com (my tier point year was previously ending 8-Feb).

      That sounds like a soft landing year? The app sometimes needs a shut down and restart, or clearing cookies, to show correct info!

    This was always the case IF you accrued enough tier points from April 1st 2024 – 31st March 2025. It was the new year alignment process that counted back flights. It wasn’t that easy to understand though

    My silver card still showing expiry of 30 Nov 25. I wonder if it’s those that qualified for status in that year (rather than soft landing to it) have been extended or does that logic not follow?

    Whatever the case may be I’ve had silver for more years than I care to remember at least a decade or more. Due to changes in year end I probably drop to Bronze this year but instead of encourage to fly B.A. it will have the opposite effect and with mean I don’t automatically look for flights on the B.A. website. If I don’t get lounge access then I’m indifferent who I fly with if it’s a short flight. My definition of that is a flight under 3 journey.

    Earned basically zero TPs in the extended year
    Still expiring 31 Dec 2025, so losing around 8 months of a silver soft landing 🙁

    I flew SIN to LHR in J on 1st April , booked post 30th Dec. Only showing 400 tier points which I think is the bonus.

    Anyone had new TP’s posted yet for flights from 1st April?

    I’m having a great time on my first KLM longhaul since covid, seems like a no-brainer for anyone not based in London who’s still unhappy with BAEC changes. My choice was driven by cost (fully flex J same £ as BA non-flex W) but I might start favouring KLM regardless when flying South / East. In my mind the product was on par with BA, not several steps ahead…

    Seat as good as club suite, flawless and friendly service from very experienced crew, higher quality catering (slightly less choice but they have espresso! Chocolates shaped like Dutch houses, choice of 5 PDBs including a creative mocktail vs BA’s 2 types of battery acid…); better wifi, IFE screen, IT and website; priority boarding and use of 1L jetbridge for J only strictly enforced; stylish amenity bag and other Dutch design touches… AMS lounge on par with Galleries Club for me (fine but not special) but ex-UK transfer to non-Schengen so easy next time I’d cut it shorter and simply walk gate to gate..
